GSTC Clinches 2018 USATF-NJ Overall Team Grand Prix

THE CLUB EMAIL

"Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools. We don't have great government, principally because we have good government. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life."

-Jim Collins, Good to Great

Trivia Question: why didn't the club win in 2016?
A- We got crushed all year long,
B- We kept showing up to the wrong races,
C- Many members joined thinking erroneously it was a gardening club*,
D- The Leadership Team voted to not support the 2016 USATF-NJ spring racing schedule.

*this actually happened once in 2011

ASHENFELTER RESULTS:
USATF-NJ'S GRAND FINALE

Leskow Leads GSTC Charge as Mens' Teams Go 1-2-3-4
L to R: Mo, Aaron, and Steve rolling sub-5:00 pace at the 3.5 mile mark

The GSTC men threw down hard at the Ashenfelter 8k on Thanksgiving morning, putting their top five in the top ten and ten in the top twenty as their teams went 1-2-3-4 in the team standings.

Their top five of Aaron Leskow (24:58), Kyle Price (25:11), Steve Rathbun (25:12/PR), newcomer Moath Alkhawaldeh (25:14), and Sean Donohue (25:44) averaged an amazing 25:16--the fastest scoring team in Ashenfelter history.  Will Appman (26:00) was just a few steps behind, as were Brad Kilheeny (26:10), Jonathan Frieder (26:29), Matt Eder (26:38), and Brendan Conway (26:39/PR).

Out of the top thirty finishers, twenty of them wore the black and gold, one of the club's best showings in this classic USATF-NJ grand finale.

All that said, the club's three fastest runners (Addison Monroe, Nicholo Fillippazzo, Matt Gillette) didn't compete.

WOMEN AVERAGE 29:07!!!
Fastest Team in A8K History Lead by Goose, Mateescu

The GSTC ladies totally crushed Ashenfelter on Thanksgiving morning, churning out a sizzling 29:07 average which is, by far, the fastest team average in the event.  It also is arguably the strongest performance by a women's team in the history of the USATF-NJ.

Shelby Goose was the team's top finisher, running the GSTC's #2 8k time of 27:26 and winning the overall race.  Nike Mateescu came in as the #2 finisher with the club's #3 all-time of 28:09.  Tracksters Emily Rosario (30:02) and Nicole Burlingson (30:11) were the 3-4 runners, and Erika Meling's PR of 30:16 closed out the top five.

The top five girls were all in the top eight.

The B Team finished 2nd overall, and the C team was fourth.  Shannon Mckenna's PR of 31:48 was tops on the B team, followed by Amy Williams (32:40), Leah Roberts (32:42), Danielle Shannon (32:55), and Aya Leitz (34:21).

M40s Put on a Show in
Nationals Tune-Up
Frieder Wins Crown while Squad Averages 27:06; Teams Go 1-3-4
48 year old Jonathan Frieder crushes the masters field with a 26:29

The M40s team put an exclamation to the end of the 2018 USATF-NJ season with both a dominant win and a third and fourth place showing for the B and C teams.  While it's surely all speculative and subjective, the top five's 27:06 average could also be the single greatest masters team effort in the history of the NJ association.

The Frieder twins finished 1-3 for the squad, as Jonathan (26:29) and Elliott (27:05) had very strong races while Sam Teigen (26:55), coming off a 2:37 Chicago Marathon, was the #2 man.  Thom Knowles continued to make his glorious comeback from a year of hip injuries as the #4 finisher (27:18), and Shawn Williams (27:45), who has run every single team race this year, was the #5 man.

Rich Osifchin and Dave Boonstra were the 1-2 finishers on the third place team, while Steve Segaloff was the top man for the fourth place team.

The M50s team finished second behind Osifchin, Gary Leaman, David Lacouture, Brian Harris, and Karl Leitz.  The M60s were 7th overall.

Boys 11-12 Win Region 2 Title, then Win Northeast Footlocker Team Title Next Weekend
After winning the USATF Region 2 and Northeast Footlocker team titles, the boys 11-12 XC squad is having a banner year with one more big one on the horizon: the USATF national championships.

At Footlocker, Max Huang broke the course record while teammates Matt Califano (2nd), Alex Pelov (7th), and Alex Califano (9th) all earned All-Northeast honors with prestigious top ten finishes.

Three other GSTC'ers earned this status: Will Van Etten (2nd/ 9-10), Cameron Sontz (6th/9-10), and Ines Lemee (9th/11-12).

Great Performances at NYC
Kunda, McKenna Record Big PRs
The New York City was a big day for GSTC'ers, as many ran big PRs.  Shannon McKenna (3:16:27), Diana Angi (4:12:24), and
Jotjit Kunda (3:03:56) had big breakthroughs, while Travis Chewning-Kulick (2:39:15) and Jamie Hartop (2:44:40) were the club's two top finishers.  And, of course, what's a NYC Marathon without Aya (3:22:16) and Karl (3:50:05) Leitz!?

Two weeks later, Anthony Bocchine (3:46:24), Brian Weitz (1:23:05), Julie Williamson (1:32:03), and Sam Tooley (1:16:28) crushed it in Philly.  Kim Criscaden, meanwhile, ran 3:45 at the Raleigh Marathon.

Teichmann Crushes First Marathon
One of the first GSTC members in club history, Dan Teichmann ran his first marathon, the Marine Corps Marathon, and totally crushed it in 2:51:15.  His teammates Melissa Farley (3:34:44/BQ) and Kim DiFranco (4:15:09) ran quite well, also.

Laura Cummings ran a very speedy 78:55 to win the Suffolk Half Marathon, but we won't have any pictures, and it's really getting late, and we just want to send this email out.

USATF-NJ 8k XC is a Slopfest
A good time was had by everyone.  That is all.  I mean, we scored a lot of points.  And Garrett was crushing it the first 100 meters while Will keeps wearing those awkward German shorts.  Ah, can't forget about the seriously cool-looking guy behind Will.  S-T-U-D.  And what is Eric Davis wearing on his head, and why is Mike so damned happy on the far left?  Jason thinks he's super slick with those sunglasses.

PRICE BREAKS WORLD RECORD FOR HM IN SUIT

After decades of running, Kyle Price finally found his calling: running in a business suit.

The thirty-year old die-hard GSTC'er ran the Syracuse Half Marathon weeks ago in 72:37, about 5:30/mile, with Sean Donohue (pictured above) helping with the pacing duties.  If you don't believe us, go ahead and read the article here.

This was good enough for 12th overall and first in his age group.  Donohue was 11th in 72:30.

Meanwhile, Stephen Rathbun busted a huge PR, running 69:45 for 7th place.  However, he dressed like a normal human would, so he didn't get an article in  Syracuse.com.

Minervini Finishes 4th with
Turkey on His Head
Mark Minervini set a pending 5k club record with a turkey on one's head, as the young man ran 17:45 at the Sparta Turkey Trot 5k to finish 4th out of 1,187....and first Turkey Head Finisher.

GSTC'ers Race Westfield Turkey Trot Days After Ashenfelter

Look at this beautiful collection of speedy men and women.  They ate so much turkey on Thursday....they came back on Friday and turkey trotted one more time in the Westfield five miler.

Aaron Leskow won the race in 25:56, thus clinching the USATF-NJ Grand Prix.  Kyle Price jogged a 26:27 for third to clinch second in the overall GP.   Mike Zanfardino (28:55) and Gary Leaman (29:52) also broke the 30 minute barrier.

Amy Williams (32:20), Karl Leitz (33:30), Aya Leitz (34:31), Mike Terruso (34:51), Peter Auteri (36:35/ 1st AG), and John Bergacs (1:08:40) also trotted like the turkeys that they are.

....and Track Season is Beginning!

Meling Wins, PRs at Princeton HM

Erika Meling won the Princeton Half Marathon in a personal best of 1:24:52, and her teammate, Mo Alkawaldeh, won the men's race in 73:23.  Both times broke the event records over the hilly 13.1 course.

Kyle's Korner
On this week's edition of Kyle's Korner we spoke to Tomas Nochta. A never member of our team, he been making waves with posts and good spirits on our Facebook pages. He loves his long distance and though he doesn't often get the chance to, loves his group runs with the club. Here's your chance to get to know him better!

Kyle: Hello Tomas and thank you for joining us!
Tomas: Hi Kyle. Happy to join a great club.
Kyle: Why don't you start off with how that came to be? When did you join and how did it happen?
Tomas: Before I joined GSTC i was a member of a different running club. When I decided to leave the club I only wanted to be an independent runner without any club background.
I joined GSTC last year somewhere around October and that's because of Jason Timochko. Exactly on October 19, 2017
Kyle: What made you decide to get back into the club life after your solo stint?
Tomas: Honestly, I don't even know. But I am happy I did.
Kyle: So are we! How has being on the club treated you so far?
Tomas: So far it's great. I am not a fast runner and definitely can't compete with the rest but everyone I know is very friendly and supportive.
Kyle: Love to hear that. Do you have a group you typically run with?
Tomas: I can't say that. My schedule is very busy so I mostly run alone.
Kyle: So the club is here for you when you need it but you also do your own thing a lot. What do you do besides running?
Tomas: Sadly nothing. Running, family and work. That's my life pretty much for some time now. I used to ski but I don't have time for it anymore.
Kyle: What do you do for work?
Tomas: Work for hospitality as an Area director of housekeeping. Managing the housekeeping operations for 700 rooms.
Kyle: Wow! I can barely manage to keep my 1 room out of chaos. What's the area you cover with that volume?
Tomas: Those are 2 hotels at the financial district in New York.
Kyle: So do you run there often? Beautiful area
Tomas: Not really. I like to come home and run from home. It's much easier and more convenient.
Kyle: Definitely easier I'll give you that ha. So are you a longer distance guy or more mid distance?
Tomas: I have a goal to complete all 6 marathon majors by 2020. And I love the long distance.
Kyle: Amazing! How many have you done?
Tomas: So far 3. I ran NYC, Tokyo and Chicago.
Kyle: Halfway there! You have Boston Berlin or London planned yet?
Tomas: I still hope for some magic that I can get into London 2019. Berlin 2019 should be ok and if all go well I should be able to BQ for Boston 2020. The hardest to get in is London.

Kyle: Well best of luck to you! You seem to have a solid plan.
Tomas: And after Boston I will be a fresh master.
Kyle: Chuck will be happy with that!
Tomas: And I will be happy if he can help me to get into London.
Kyle: Beautious. How many marathons have you done?
Tomas: 4
Kyle: Which was the not major one you did?
Tomas: Steamtown 2017
Kyle: Great race
Tomas: Yes it is. Last year was the steamiest ever.
Kyle: Hahaha. Do you get on the track indoor or outdoor or do you stick to road racing?
Tomas: Road. I never raced on the track. And I never ran cross country. Ever.
Kyle: Any plans on trying either of them out ha?
Tomas: Maybe one day.
Kyle: It's fuuun. So what's your next race?
Tomas: Fred Lebow half. Actually the best one is a 5K. On January 1st.
Kyle: Two of my favorite distances!
Ooo a New Years Race. Bold choice
Tomas: I did if the last 2 years. Both times a PR.
Kyle: That is extremely impressive. I am impressed. Damn.
Tomas: You should do it sometimes. This year was freaaaking cold.
Kyle: I can imagine haha. I might just have to.
Well that's all the time we have for this week. Thank you for speaking with us!

Tomas: It was my pleasure Kyle. Thank you for reaching out.
Kyle: Tune in next time to see who we interview!

Under pressure.

Aside from being a great song, that is what I was feeling recently.  The season is long, the stakes are high, and the margin of victory is always narrow.  Let's face it, we are competing at a high level for New Jersey's best track club - it's easy to feel stressed, especially when we are balancing training and racing with our job/children/coaching/family/etc.

Managing my stress levels is a constant battle.  At times I do a great job of not engaging with thoughts that evoke a stressful reaction, other times I do not.  I've yet to find a fool-proof method of dealing with stressors. I guess if such a technique existed there wouldn't be so many books written on this topic (many of which I have read) and sports psychology would be not be a field of study.

I often find myself on race day standing on the starting line watching my heart rate increase, but the gun goes off and it becomes just another run. Once I cross the finish line I often wonder why I was so nervous in the first place. I will try to remind myself of this when I stand on the starting line in Spokane for club nationals.

I'm writing this because I know I'm not alone as many of you have shared similar stories with me.  I've enjoyed hearing about the techniques you use to deal with the pressures of competing. In closing, the only advice I can offer you is to not be so hard on yourself.  Remember, even monkeys fall out of trees.
