Men Extend USATF-NJ Winning Streak to Six Years
Izewski Cruises to 24:53 Victory
Sewnig, Appman, and Gooding working together on the back stretch.

On September 25th, 2011, in just its second race in club history, the GSTC open men lost the USATF-NJ Half Marathon Championships by 2:01.  One runner called out sick, one just ran very poorly, and well...that was six years ago.  The open men haven't lost since, mounting a six year, 54-race winning streak in USATF-NJ Association Grand Prix contests.

It is the longest standing winning streak in America.

On Sunday's USATF-NJ 8k XC Championships, the Breakneck Track Club brought up a good group from South Jersey to challenge both this streak and the $500 travel stipend for winning the race.  However, the GSTC loaded up on one team, putting its best seven on it, and ran away with a comfortable 27-43 win in Flemington's Deer Path Park.

Izewski crossing the finish line in first.

Interestingly enough, it was tied 6-6 after two runners, as Josh Izewski (1) and Aaron Leskow (5) were even with their top two finishers who came in at 2nd and 4th place.  But from there, the floodgates opened, as Darrell Gooding (6th), Jon Sewnig (7th), Stephen Rathbun (8th), and Will Appman (9thth) came in before their #3.  Evan Ward, GSTC's #7 who was only twelve seconds behind Sewnig, finished 11th, ahead of their #4.

Joseph Kubiak, in his club debut, finished 13th overall, helping the B Team finish third with 100 points.  Marquis Cox (21st) was the top man for the C Team that finished 6th (156 points), as was Wes Cole (35th) for the D Team's 8th place (200 points) finish out of eleven teams.

W40s Finish 2nd
The masters women's 40s team continued to enjoy a fall resurgence, as the crew finished second again in yet another super close contest.   Their top three finished 8th-9th-10th for 27 points.

Christine Witt, in her club debut, ran 35:15 with Aya Leitz (35:20) and Cathy Mersereau (35:51) right behind her.   Cherylann Dorsey (13th), Erin Varga (30th), and Prudence Jones rounded out the team.

Women Go 2-3
GSTC Ladies Show Depth in Final XC Race
Eleven of the top twenty open women were on the GSTC, and such depth resulted in a 2nd and 3rd place finish for the GSTC ladies.

Emily Rosario continued her strong fall, finishing as the top GSTC runner and 2nd finisher overall with a 31:09 finish.  Shannon Mckenna (8th), Kelly Reager (10th), Annie Levine (12th), and Aya Leitz (14th) rounded out the top team that finished with 46 points, just six behind the top team.

Marianne Miller showed her range with an impressive 34:35 finish, good for 11th overall to lead the 3rd place GSTC group.  Witt, Mersereau, Stephanie Zottoli (17th), Cynthia Cuiule (18th), and Erin LaCosta (37th) also chipped in.

M40s Go 2-4; M50s 2nd
Much like the open women, the masters 40s team has an incredible amount of depth.  Despite not having 4/5 of the group that finished 6th weeks ago at the USATF National XC 5k Masters Championships in Boston, the group muscled out a 2-4 team finish at the 8k XC Championships.

For the first time in his career, which is really a sign of the GSTC apocalypse, Chuck Schneekloth was the top finisher in 29:17.  Gary Leaman (9th), Wes Cole (12th), Nick VanLangen (13th), and John Hendy (17th) rounded our the second place team.

Dave Ferruggia (11th) continued his very fine debut season with the GSTC with a 30:29, 11th place finish.  Jeffrey Lawson also continued an excellent first season, as he finished 14th in 31:14.  Chris Rinaldi (19th), Karl Leitz (28th), Brian Harris (31st), and Peter Auteri (41st) were the runners of the fourth place team.

Leaman was the top finisher for the 50s team as the #2 50s finisher.  VanLangen, Hendy, Matt Baker, and Karl Leitz rounded out the scoring top five.

The 60s team snagged a 6th place finish, with Auteri (10th), Fran Beideman (16th), Jack Skydel (26th), and John Bergacs (42nd) comprised the team.

Cafferty Sets 26.2 PR

Meg Cafferty ran a 16:07 personal best at the Marine Corps Marathon weeks ago, finishing in 4:32:44.  Although she was hoping to shave off a bit more time, you can't go wrong with a 16:00 PR!

Garcia Wins HM

Ricky Garcia, who conveniently had "a month's worth of laundry to fold" during Liberty Waterfront Half Marathon last month, ran his first half marathon, the Seaside Half Marathon, last weekend and won in 1:18:43.  If you look closely at the women on the right, it appears she is really enjoying Mr. Garcia's backside.

Angi Races in NYC
Diana Angi ran three NYC races in October to clinch her 2018 NYC Marathon entry.  On 10/8, she ran the Staten Island Half in 2:00:08, on 10/22 she ran the First Bad Ass 5 Mile Trail Race, and ran the Poland Spring Marathon Kickoff 5 Email in 43:22.

Masters Men 6th at USATF Masters National 5k  XC Championships
After a third place finish at the 5k road national masters championships, the M40s team traveled up to Boston for the 5k XC National Championship.  In the second most competitive masters championship (to club nationals), the group mustered a 6th place overall finish with 155 points.  Despite having a total team time 1:34 faster than the 5th place team, the Atlanta Track Club edged them out by four points.  Meanwhile, the were just one point away from the Baltimore Washington Athletic Club, who finished 7th with 156 points.

The group of Jason Timochko, Chuck Schneekloth, Thom Knowles, Steve Geiger, and Gary Leaman finished in that order with a compression of just thirty-four seconds between their top five runners, the smallest compression in the field.

Men Raise Money for New Track, Compete at Local 5k

A large crew of GSTC'ers came out to support the 2017 "Race to Replace", an event raising money for the Roselle Catholic High School track.  Aaron Leskow (15:26) and Jon Sewnig (16:01)  went 1-3, while Steve Rathbun (16:10), Sean Donohue (16:22), Kyle Price (16:28), Tim Ball (16:28/GSTC debut), Maanek Kumar (16:29), Ricky Garcia(16:35), and Mike Kennedy (16:36) were all in the top ten.

Leitzes Hang Out by
Parkway Sign

Kyle Price and Aya Leitz won the Paramus 10k in 33:33 and 43:30, respectively.  Karl Leitz, pictured above, ran 46:45, good for 4th in his age group.

Not a huge surprise
Kate Wins Best Kate

Parisen Wins HTB 5k
Mark Parisen, shown here years ago when he was fast, won the Hit the Bricks 5k in Sayreville in 19:18.  He handed the second place finisher, listed as a 99-year old named "Not Registered", a convincing loss.  Mr. Registered declined to comment on his 21:04 clocking.

Timochko Breaks 17:00

Masters runner Jason Timochko broke 17:00 for the 5k for the first time, dropping a 16:52.   This is the second fastest road 5k by a GSTC masters runner this year, only behind Thom Knowles' 16:43 in Syracuse.

Runner's World Results

Ellen Patterson Neelen  ran her third best 5k as a masters runner, as she ran 24:46.

Matt Gillette and Chris Mullin went 1-2 in the 10k running 32:03 and 33:18, respectively.

Gillette also won the 5k in 15:55.

Jersey Joe Wins HM

Joseph Schattauer PaillĂ© continued his fast fall season, as he won
the Sri Chinmoy Half in 1:20:21 up in Jamaica, NY.  Unable to race most Sunday mornings due to his job, Joe does an incredible job of finding creative solutions.  There just aren't many Saturday races anymore!
