Fall Racing Seasons Starts in...the Summer?
GSTC Rolls Deep in Fall Openers

It's tough racing in the summer, as people are on vacation.  It interferes with the base-building phase of training.  No one feels race ready.  It lengthens the racing season from August to December.  And it's just too hot and humid out there!  But thankfully, the GSTC rallied, altered their training plans, came home early from their island vacations, and took care of business.  Read all about it below!

Chuck, seen here exiting the pool last weekend, thanks everyone for their late-August sacrifices.

Big Day at the Mile

'Twas a great day for the #goldandblackpack at the USATF-NJ Road Mile Championships.  The open men's teams finished 1-2-3-5.  The open women went 1-2-4.  The M50s won, the M40s went 2-4, and the F40s snagged silver.  That's a lotta points!  Read below for how it all went down, as there is always more to the score than just numbers.

Gillette, Izewski Battle for Road Mile Title
Photo Finish!

Perhaps the highlight of the day was the slugfest between GSTC'ers Josh Izewski and Matt Gillette.  Seen above with 200m to go, they dominated the field, separating themselves by over ten seconds from the eventual bronze medalist (and teammate) Kyle Price.  At the finish line, it was impossible to tell who would actually win, as they appeared to be deadlocked.  We can't use the phrase "stride for stride," because no one can do that to the giant Gillette.
With about 50m to go, Gillette's monster stride appeared to gain him an edge, leading him to a narrow 1.2 second win over Izewski, 4:15 to 4:16.  The crowd, mostly just earlier participants, loved every second of the drama.  After an incredible undefeated spring season, this was Izewski's first silver medal in a black and gold uniform.

Goglas Sees a Ghost at Finish Line

Although Ken Goglas had the greatest finish line picture, above, many had great performances.

Kyle Price has an exceptionally brilliant finish, overcoming almost 100m in the final 600m for a third place finish in 4:24.  Uriah St. Lewis, in his club debut, was 5th overall in 4:30.  From there, Maanek Kumar (4:37), Edsel Flores (4:38), Steve Rathbun (4:38), and Steve Skydel (4:41) all ran impressively fast for the middle of August.

Rosario Leads GSTC Women
The 2:12 half miler from Brooklyn had a huge breakthrough last weekend in her club debut, dropping a ten second road mile PR en route to her second place finish as the GSTC's top miler.  But in order to finish teams 1st, 2nd, and 4th, she had one heckuva squad close behind her.

The GSTC's winning 5-person team averaged 5:36, and to the left were the #2 and #3 finishers, Kate Ashley and Kelly Reager.  Ashley, coming off a big spring season, ran 5:36 while Reager, a recent college graduate, rolled in two seconds later.

Amy Williams (5:43) and Andrea Bourgal (5:52) rounded out the winning team's top five scoring finishers.

No Excuses Here!
Miller, Back from Pregnancy, Helps Team to Silver

It isn't easy being pregnant, and it certainly isn't easy getting back to racing shape afterward.  That said, Marianne Miller has been relentless in her track workouts this summer, as she ran 6:00.32 to finish 3rd for the B Team, propelling them to a second place finish.  Nicola Hallenborg (5:32), Shannon McKenna (5:43), Erin LaCosta (6:05), and Christina Chafos (6:06) rounded out the silver medal winning team.

Stanchura, in Middle of Marathon Training,
Makes GSTC Debut and Helps C Team Get 4th

Chelsea Stanchura, right, is prepping for a marathon, but she found a way to fit the road mile into her training schedule.  And thank goodness, because her 6:40 effort helped the C Team finish fourth overall.  A few steps ahead of her, Kristina Petillo, left, also ran well, finishing in 6:30.  Other members of this team were Nicole Salge (5:54), Cherylann Dorsey (6:14), Sandi Kaspszyk (6:16), and Megan Cafferty (6:56).

LeBourne Crowned Top Masters Miler

In the masters rankings, it's all about age graded performance.  So it's not just how fast you run, but how fast you run combined with your age.
That's what determines who wins the prize money.

At age 58, the ageless wonder Anselm LeBourne, holder of eighteen age group world records, ran a whopping 4:59.36.  This age grades at 90.66%...wow.  In comparison, his younger counterparts Izewski and Gillette age graded at 86%.  Kyle Price was 84%.  Edsel Flores was 79%.  You get the picture.  This is amazing.

His heroics helped the 50s team grab yet another gold medal.  This group included Gary Leaman (5:17), Nick Van Langen (5:31), Matt Baker (5:39), Peter Auteri (6:29), and Fran Beideman (7:03).

Masters W40s Get Silver
Despite not even having a team days before, the group rallied hard and finished with an impressive second place overall.   Cherylann Dorsey (center) was the top finisher in 6:14; Sandi Kaspszyk (left), who arrived from AC hours prior, was second in 6:16, and Janet Patterson (right) ran an impressive 6:35 at age 51.  A fantastic effort from our masters ladies!

Knowles, with Perfect Running Form,
Leads 40s to Silver Medal
Thom Knowles continues to be a bastion of perfect running form and racing consistency, as the former Princeton star finished as the GSTC's top 40s finisher in 4:55.  From there, LeBourne, Chuck Schneekloth (5:04), Jason Timochko (5:05), Mike Spellman (5:15), and Leaman filled out the team for their second place finish.

Ferruggia, Lawsom Lead 40s B Team to 4th
In one of the biggest surprises of the day, the 40s B Team had an exceptional day, finshing 4th overall.  David Ferruggia (5:06) and Jeff Lawsom (5:21, above) both made their GSTC team debut, and they both ran brilliantly.  VanLangen, Baker, Auteri, and Beideman pitched in for the b team, as well.

Open Women Teams
Go 1-3-4-8
Rosario Wins First USATF-NJ Title
McKenna and Forlenza work together up the first hill.

The GSTC open ladies had a big day at the office last weekend, as the team put five in the top ten--including having the overall champion, Emily Rosario.

The winning team scored just 35 points, with SAC doubling that number in second place.  Filling out the team was Rosario (19:06/1st), Adrienne Viola (19:22/3rd), Cheyenne Goglas (20:03/6th), Amy Williams (20:41/12th), and Lauren Rome (20:42/13th).  For Goglas, it was her first team race post-pregnancy, and for Rome, it was her first race in two years.

Rosario wins her first USATF-NJ title.

The B team fell just shy of second place with 88 points, as Shannon Mckenna (20:15), Jackie Lemme (20:34), Kelly Reager (20:45), Cherylann Dorsey (22:20), and Erin LaCosta (23:43) chipped in for the collective bronze.

The "c" team, a combination of three masters and two open ladies, finished fourth overall with 93 points.  The crew consisted of Suzanne Forlenza (20:17), Aya Leitz (21:25), Sandi Kaspszyk (21:57), Cythnia Cuiule (22:17), and Cathy Mersereau (22:30).
Delzo finishing the finish stretch

Janissa Delzo, in her club debut, ran 22:19, a time fast enough to score on both the third and place fourth teams.  She teamed up with Kristina Petillo (24:31), Erin Varga (26:00), Megan Cafferty (26:52), and Diana Stavrou (26:54) to finish 8th overall.

Open Men's Teams
Finish 1-2-3-4-9
Gillette the Great Wins Yet Again
Sewnig, Price, Gillette, and Rathbun lead the charge through the first mile

Matt Gillette, a 2016 Olympic Trials qualifier in the marathon, continued to have the hot hand, winning his second USATF-NJ title in a row- this time at the USATF-NJ 5k Championships.  The Shippensburg native won in 16:08, rolling with the pack until distancing himself in the final mile.

Meanwhile, his teammates put 8 runners in the top 10, and 23 inside the top 33, as the men's teams finished 1-2-3-4-9.  After Gillette, those in the top ten include Steve Rathbun (2nd/16:30), Jon Sewnig (3rd/16:34), Kyle Price (4th/16:44), Jeff Perrella (5th/16:47), Darrell Gooding (6th/16:51), Uriah St. Lewis (8th/17:01), and Sean Donohue (9th/17:06).

Rathbun led the C Team to first place, while the B, A, and D teams finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively.  It is also worth noting that the B, A, and D teams all scored 76 points.  Wow- who's the smart guy who puts these team
s together?  I bet he's a pretty good looking guy, as well.

SAC was the 5th place open team, and they scored 142 points- exactly double the number of the GSTC's 2-3-4 teams.

Masters Women Finish Third in Tight Race
Varga, Leitz, Mersereau, Kaspszyk, and Dorsey pose before the race

The closest race of the day was the women masters 40s.  Just three points separated four teams, which is almost unheard of.  First and second place finished with 23 and 24 points, respectively, and then the GSTC tied with another team with 26 points.

Aya Leitz (7th), Kaspszyk (9th), and Dorsey (10) were the top three finishing places to result in the 26 points (7+9+10).

The tie-breaker in cross country is, of course, the next runner.  For the GSTC, this was Cathy Mersereau in 13th place.   Since the other team's next runner was 20th place, the GSTC won the tie-breaker and finished 3rd overall.  Every runner counts in cross country!

Masters Men 2-3-6 in the 40s, 50s, and 60s
Timochko, an art teacher, rolls up to the finish line.

The masters men had a solid, but certainly not their best, day at the 5k cross country championships.  The 40s team was the top finishing team with yet another silver medal.  Although Thom Knowles was again the club's top man, the big story was Jason Timochko.  In his first ever cross country race, the 41 year old was the team's #2 man with an impressive 18:30 effort.  Chuck Schneekloth (18:42), Gary Leaman (18:50), and Nick VanLangen (19:44) rounded out the team's top five finishers.

The B Team finished an impressive fourth overall.  David Lacouture, in his club debut, was the team's top finisher, as Wes Cole (19:13), Mike Terrusso (21:33), Karl Leitz (22:13), and Peter Auteri (23:45) were the other team members,

The 50s team, down a few men, finished an unusual third place.  Right behind Leaman was Lacouture with VanLangen, Leitz, and Jack Skydel (24:53) rounding out the team.

Auteri at the finish line.

The 60s team finished 6th overall.  Peter Auteri continued his strong and consistent 2017 campaign, finishing 13th in the 60s field with a 23:45.  Fran Beideman (24:32), Jack Skydel (24:53), and John Bergacs (36:12) were the team's other finishers.
