After the USATF-NJ Half Marathon and 5k,
GSTC Opens Up Overall Lead

The Newport Liberty Waterfront Half Marathon, the long-standing USATF-NJ Half Marathon Championships, continued its streak of misery-inflicting experiences for its runners.  Regardless, the GSTC fought through the humid weather, the twisty turns, and the hapless potholes to extend its overall lead in the USATF-NJ Overall Grand Prix

Liz Tawa, above, made her club debut and was one of many standout performers last weekend.  With just a few races left, and a solid lead, the GSTC looks to capture its fourth USATF-NJ Grand Prix team title.

Club Racks Up 86 Points at HM
Izewski Wins Easy in 71:47
After cruising seven miles in the 5:30s, then the next five in the 5:20s, what's the best way to finish the last mile in a half marathon?  Why, drop a 4:47, of course.

That's exactly how the 2017 USATF-NJ Half Marathon Championships played out for Josh Izewski, who continued the long tradition of GSTC success at the event since the team first competed in it in 2011.

And that dreadful race on September 25th, 2011 will forever live in infamy, as it was the first and last time the GSTC open men lost a team race.  Winning by 4:00 after the first four runners finished, the GSTC #5 man ran 86:00, sinking the ship for the first--and only--time in open men history.

GSTC history of the race includes Jeff Perrella 2nd (2011), Ken Goglas 1st (2012), Chris Croff 1st (2013), Goglas 1st (2014), Steve Mennitt 2nd (2015), and Will Appman 1st (2016).

Lead by 4 Points with Three Races to Go
M50s Win Again
Gary Leaman continued his big season in 2017, as his 1:23:54 once again carried the M50s team to victory.  However, it takes a lot more than one guy to win a team title.  He was followed closely by teammates David Lacouture (1:23:54- pictured above), Nick VanLangen (1:26:20), John Hendy (1:30:27), and Yuki Negoro (1:38:02).

Right behind them were Karl Leitz (1:41:40), Peter Auteri (1:51:12), and Fran Beideman (1:54:52).

Open Men's Teams Finish 1-3-4-5
Open Men Winning Streak Extends to Six Years

The open men put 11 sexy, handsome dudes in the top 30 as they put four teams in the top five.

Finishing in the top thirty were Izewski, Will Appman (5th, 73:36), Kyle Price (7th, 74:04), Evan Ward (10th, 75:10), Darrell Gooding (11th, 76:02), Stevie Rathbun (13th, 76:37), Edsel Flores (16th, 77:11), Stevie Skydel (21st, 79:12), Thom Knowles (25th, 80:24), Sam Tooley (27th, 81:48), and Jason Timochko.

Open Women's Teams Finish 2-5-7
Although many ran well, it was a rough day out there for some of the ladies.  The humidity and painfully turny course made it a tough one.

Liz Tawa had a great club and half marathon debut, as she rolled in as the team's #1 runner with a 1:27:08 time.  Aimee Chegwidden (1:28:26), Amy Williams (1:33:52), Maureen Lynch (1:38:22), and Nicola Hallenborg (1:42:10) rounded out the team's scoring top five.

Annie Levie (pictured above) was the front runner for the 5th place team, as she came in at 1:34:18.  Shannon McKenna (1:34:27), Suzanne Forlenza (1:35:07), Aya Leitz (1:40:29), and Megan Cafferty (2:04:34) were the other scoring team members.  USATF-NJ XC 5k Champion Emily Rosario was on this team, but she unfortunately was forced to walk the last several miles due to foot pain from the course.

Jackie Lemme and Kristen Prazenica were a solid 1-2 punch for the 7th place team, as they ran 1:32:07 and 1:44:44 respectively.   Cherylann Dorsey (1:46:52) and Chelsea Stachura (1:49:15) were right behind k-Praz, while Prudence Jones (2:45:23) was the final scoring #5 runner.

M40s Teams Finish
 2nd and 3rd
Although their two teams finished second and third, the masters 40s team also didn't have the best day in the office.

Thom Knowles and Jason Timochko were a solid 1-2 punch up front, surviving the humidity with an 80:24 and 81:53 effort, respectively.  Leaman was the #3 man, but #4 and #5 runners Chuck Schneekloth (84:01) and Sam Valentin (85:27, pictured above) struggled.

On the third place team, Eric Davis (85:34), Wes Cole (87:54), and Dave Ferruggia (98:50) chipped in with some 50s guys to help lock down the bronze team medal.

W40s Place 7th
The masters women finished 7th overall with Aya Leitz (1:40:29) continuing her fabulous masters campaign.  Cherylann Dorsey (1:46:52) was right behind her, and Prudence Jones (2:45:23) rounded out the team scoring.

Viola Wins 10k
Adrienne Viola won the Philly Rock-n-Roll 10k weeks ago in 39:40.  This would be the club picture of the year if she remembered to pack her GSTC uniform!  Congrats to Adrienne who, between her MD and PhD programs, somehow finds time to train and race at such a high level.

Schattauer Wins Ramsey 10k
Joe Schattauer-Paille is perpetually in a tough spot.  He loves to run, and he's a good runner, but...the most important time and day of his job are Sunday mornings.  So what's a guy to do?

Thankfully he found a good Saturday 10k weeks ago, the Jack McKeown Memorial Ramsey10k, and he won it handedly in 36:59, just cracking 37:00.  Rocking his signature baseball cap, above, Joe averaged 5:57 pace in this race he won by almost a full minute.

We are, however, unclear why the police pace car is behind him?!

Visicaro Wins Steeplechase 5k
Tommy Visicaro won yet another Steeplechase 5k weeks ago, as the hometown hero jogged an easy 18:07 for the dubya.  On the women's side, Christine Witt and Leah Roberts, for the second year in a row, went 1-2 running 20:39 and 21:52, respectively.

Above, Tom shows off his winnings.  A pretty sweet first place prize, if you ask us!

Garcia Wins TAT 5k
Ricky Garcia captured the elusive and prestigious Trek Against Trafficking 5k title days ago at Duke Island Park, yet he was disappointed when he learned he couldn't drop a traffic violation after winning it in 16:44.

Teammate Mark Parisen was next in 18:07, and Mike Terruso, who forgot to pack his team uniform (far right) and ran 20:54, simply showed up to show off his quads for the starting gun picture.

Leitz Wins Steeplechase 10k
Aya Leitz won the the Steeplechase 10k last weekend, and her husband Karl won his age group with a fine 46:17.  He also nabbed this pumpkin.   Mike Terruso also won his age group in 45:44.

Lesinski Runs RnR, Great Pumpkin 5k

GSTC Ladies
Finish 1-2-4-6
at Little Silver 5k

Shelby Goose made her GSTC debut a memorable one at the Little Silver 5k this weekend, as she rolled to an impressive 17:11 win.  She was also the top runner of the winning team that averaged 18:30.

Goose (right) sitting on the leader at mile two.

Goose was joined by Aimee Chegwidden (18:17), Adrienne Viola (18:40), Kate Ashley (18:57), and Caroline Kellner (19:26) on the 'A Team.'  This was a PR for Ashley and the first time she ever broke 19:00.

Meling, Ashley, and Evangelist work together.

The second place team averaged 19:23 and was lead by Erika Meling who also cracked 19:00 with an 18:57 effort, finishing just a hair behind Ashley.  Robyn Evangelist (19:00), Kelly Reager (19:10), Lauren Rome (19:46), and Annie Levine (20:01) teamed up with Meling for the silver team medal.

Amy Williams, in her final weekend before her marathon, was the top finisher for the fourth place C Team with a solid 19:27.  Right behind her were teammates Andrea Bourgal (20:00), Aya Leitz (20:29), Stephanie Zottoli (20:35), Cynthia Cuiule (20:41), and Cherylann Dorsey (21:38).

The D Team finished 6th out of thirteen teams.  Marianne Miller, fresh off her breakthrough road mile at 5th Ave, came in at 20:57.  Leah Roberts (20:57), Erin LaCosta (22:36), Chelsea Stanchura (23:23), Kristina Petillo (23:45), Megan Cafferty (23:45), and Prudence Jones (34:20) rounded out the team.   For Cafferty, also in marathon training, this was a twenty-two second personal best.

Masters Men 3rd at USATF Masters National 5k Championships

The masters men had a banner day up in the Syracuse Festival of Races, as they squeaked onto the podium with a 17:03 average.  Their overall time of 51:08 edged out NYC's Willow Street AC's 51:15 for the team bronze medal.

The team comprised of Thom Knowles (16:42), Chuck Schneekloth (16:59), and Gary Leaman (17:25).

Cross-river rival Central Park Track Club finished 7th in the M40s race.

Ladies PR at Wineglass
Corning, New York, home of the Wineglass Marathon, was first settled in 1796.  It later incorporated in 1890 and quickly became known as the "Crystal City" thanks to the town's production of some of America's finest cut glass between 1880-1915.  However, Corning's first real industry was lumber, but that's a whole other conversation.

This weekend, along these very streets of "Crystal City," two GSTC'ers PR'ed in the half marathon.  College teammates Shannon McKenna and Suzanne Forlenza ran 1:29:29 and 1:29:09, respectively.  Forlenza was the 10th overall women in the half marathon.

Masters runners Sue Lawlor and Stephanie Edwards also ran the half (2:30:31) and full (4:30:07) respectively at the Wineglass Marathon.

Price Leads 1-2-3 Sweep

Kyle Price lead a 1-2-3 sweep at the Little Silver 5k.  Price (15:23), Steve Rathbun (15:46), and Sean Donohue (15:49) dominated the field, as evidence by no one behind the latter two in the picture above.
