Club Race Results

Esperanza, Heck Finish First Marathons at Wineglass

Two old friends and consistent GSTC'ers had a rough go in the final month build-up to the Wineglass Marathon.  Despite nagging injuries for both, they decided to forgo a race for time and, instead, to run together.  Adrianne Esperanza and Hannah Heck ran 4:33:31 and 4:33:41, respectively, to complete their first marathons.

Williams, Roberts Go 1-2 in Steeplechase 10k

Amy Williams (above) and Leah Roberts finished 1-2 at the Steeplechase 10k this past weekend.  Williams ran 40:06, a solid 6:27 average, for the win, while Roberts ran 41:53, her first race with a broken wrist.

#BoysinBlack Prep for Club Nats at Paul Short Invite
Seven GSTC studs took on the Paul Short Invitational, run on the famous Lehigh course that will host the 2019 club national XC championships.

Evan Ward was the crew' top finisher (and top moustache, for that matter) with a 26:44 time. Following him were teammates Garrett Derringer (26:54), Steve Rathbun (27:31), Brad Kilheeny (27:46), Brendan Conway (27:57), Steve Skydel (28:17), Nate Wojick (28:39), and Mark Minervini (29:09).

Stachura, McKenna Crush Bronx Ten Miler
Several GSTC'ers had a great day at the Bronx Ten Miler.  Highlighting the group was Shannon McKenna, who had a huge breakthrough with a 65:19, or 6:32/mile.  She is posing with teammate Chelsea Stachura, above, who ran 1:15:59, and several other rando guys who don't seem interested in joining this GSTC picture.

Will Appman ran 54:54, masters Steve Segaloff finished in 62:21, and masters Joyjit Kundu was at 68:13.

M40s CLINCH
USATF-NJ GRAND PRIX TEAM TITLE

After too many races and too long of a USATF-NJ season, the M40s needed one more win to clinch the club's first-ever M40 USATF-NJ team title.  Despite several top runners being unavailable, including Thom Knowles, Sam Teigen, Jason Gers, and Gabby Rodriguez, the masters crew flexed their muscles down at the Little Silver 5k, resulting in a huge win and a USATF-NJ association record for the fastest masters M40s 5k average: 16:47.

As they usually do, the Frieder brothers were the team's frontrunners, as Jonathan (16:21) ran away with the individual title, followed by twin Elliott (16:40) and Chuck Schneekloth (16:53).  David Ferruggia cracked 17:00 for the first time in his career with a 16:59, while Shawn Williams (17:01) rounded out the crew's scoring top five.  Joe Hegge (17:10) and Jason Timochko (17:13) were the squad's #6 and #7 men.

The M40s after winning on Sunday

Along with the 40s B team (Rich Osifchin, Gary Leaman, Javier DeJesus, Sam Valentin, Carlos Pineiro) snagging third, the M50s were also third (Osifchin, Leaman, Brian Harris, Russ Forsythe, Karl Leitz) and the M60s wre 4th (Forsythe, Peter Auteri, Fran Beideman).

Overall, the GSTC had eight in the top ten and fourteen in the top twenty.  Kyle Price won the race in 15:17, his second dubya in a row, with Aaron Leskow (2nd/15:38), Ricky Garcia (5th/16:32), Matt Eder (6th/16:33), and Mannek Kumar (7th/16:34) all cracking the top ten.

Robyn Evangelist had a great race, running 18:46 to finish second overall.  Aya Leitz was the top female masters runner with her impressive 20:32.

GSTC, FTPD, & GARDEN STATE 10 RAISE $14,000 FOR CANCER CALL OUT CHARITY

After two years of managing the Garden State 10, the Garden State Track Club has now donated a total of $14,000 to the Nick Magos Cancer Call Out, a charity that supports children with cancer.

In a presentation to charity president John Dapkins (far right) and FTPD Officer Bobby Brown (second to left) last week, GSTC and race representatives Mike Terruso and Chuck Schneekloth presented the check to the organization during their yearly Cancer Call Out event in Hillsborough, NJ.

Walk the Plank with North Enclave Captain Timochko

Team.

In case you haven't noticed our Men's 40's team has had an AMAZING year so far.  It is only October and we have already clinched both the State and National Championships.  It's worth noting that there are 11 races for the NJ series and 7 additional races for the National series.  That's 18 races where teams of 3 or 5 runners (minimum) have travel all over the state and country to compete - an impressive task that I am proud to say I have been part of.

All bragging aside, I have never been part of such a cohesive group of talented athletes.  There have been countless times this season where I have seen one of my teammates step up their performance when they saw a GSTC master who was having a bad day.  I've been on both ends of that equation and have gained confidence in knowing that my team has my back. Let's face it, we all have our good and bad days. We lift each other up because it makes our TEAM better.

What's the point?  We are a team. We all strive toward a common goal - winning.  And that means that sometimes you have to do things you don't like - such as run the Newport Liberty Half Marathon or Indian Trails 20k.  Having people depend on you can be a great motivator. Coming together for a common objective with a group of motivated people will produce great results, as evidenced here.
