Brangan Leads Masters

Finishes 2nd Master Women, Wins 40-44 Age Group

Brangan getting out hard in the opening mile of the USATF-NJ Masters 5k Championships

New Brunswick- Despite battling an inflamed plantar all month, Michelle Brangan woke up at 4:45am, left her family on vacation, drove 2.5 hours from down the beach, and raced incredibly tough this weekend at the USATF-NJ Master's Women's Championships.  The 44 year old from Sicklerville crossed the finish line at 19:38, averaging 6:19 pace on a tough, rolling-hill course.  Her efforts lead the women to a 7th place finish overall.

The club's #2 finisher, Erin Varga, somehow mustered a 25:18 despite being the race director, meaning she probably had been up since 5am setting up, etc.  Stephanie Edwards, shown on the left, finished in 26:56, good for 2nd in the 60-64 AG.

Steve Mennitt won the race in 16:06, while Angela Dunn was third overall women in 19:33.

Other GSTC'ers competing included Chuck Schneekloth (17:25, 7th), Mark Parisen (17:54, 11th), Josiah Park (17:57, 12th), Edsel Flores (18:11, 14th), Brian Weitz (18:48, 20th, PR), Eric Davis (20:35, 61st), and Ana Garcia (34:01).

Cheyenne's Thought of the Week

I don't care what anybody else says. Hello Kitty is a cat.

Kyle's Korner

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

This week on Kyle's Korner we caught up with long time member Alyssa Douma. She has represented our club at XC Nationals numerous times, has held various positions within the club, and has regularly been a top contender on our women's team both on and off the track.

Kyle : Hi Alyssa thanks for joining us!
Ms. Douma: No problem.
Kyle: A lot of us haven't seen your name in the email for any races or events in a while, what have you been up to?
Ms. Douma: I had a pretty rough time after nationals.  I took some time off after the race and when I started getting back into running again I got a concussion at work so I couldn't run again. Then when I started getting back into running again I found out that I had really bad mono. I just got cleared to run again in June. I am currently working on my fitness level.
I also just got my first teaching job and will be moving sometime in September.
Kyle: That is quite the busy half year. I'm sure I speak for everyone that we're sorry to hear about the injury and illness but we're glad you've gotten a clean bill of health and are back in the game. And congratulations on the new job! That's fantastic! What's your new position?
Ms. Douma: I will be teaching 8th grade math.
Kyle: That's great! You coach as well right?
Ms. Douma: I will not be coaching this upcoming school year. My teaching job is too far from where I currently coach. I might see if I can volunteer in the spring but I think I'm just going to focus on teaching this school year.
Kyle: Ahh, a tough but necessary decision. I'm sure the kids will miss you but hopefully you can get it worked out aftet you get used to your new schedule. So do you have any goals for XC or are you looking towards indoor for your comeback?
Ms. Douma: I know it's going to take some time to get back into shape. I don't have any goals as of right now other than to just enjoy training and to keep making progress.
Kyle: A great goal to have. Training can become a chore and there's nothing like an unwanted break from it to reset your outlook on it. Glad to hear you're enjoying the road to being back in shape. Hopefully it's not a long one. Contemplating any team races soon?
Ms. Douma: Yeah I plan on the 5k and the 8k. Not sure about the longer races like the HM yet. It will all depend on how my fitness level is coming along.
Kyle: Yeah racing a HM sounds like bit much even to me who's healthy. RANDOM QUESTION! What is your favorite current must see TV show?
Ms. Douma: Haha, well I don't really watch tv.
Kyle: NEW RANDOM QUESTION! What's your current must read literary work of art?
Ms. Douma: I just read "The Giver" while I was traveling to a wedding. I really liked it and couldn't put it down.
Kyle: Not one of my favorites but that might just be because I had to read it in middle school. Excited for the movie coming out soon?
Ms. Douma: I didn't read that book in middle school and I probably wouldn't have liked it back then either. I do want to see the movie now.
Kyle: I'll have to give it a second chance. Well hey that's all the time we have for this week, glad to hear the training difficulties seem to be over and you're back on the horse.  Thanks for talking with us!
Ms. Douma: Thanks.
Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

The aGSTC Gold Star

by Ashwin "Curry in a Hurry" Anantharaman

Mike Mossaad
Mike believes that unlike most other sports, you can't take a break in running. He things running is a great sport because it is all on you and there are no substitutions.  Running is the ultimate test of will and endurance. and you must keep going and going without stopping until you reach the very end. The song that he would suggest for anyone pumping-up for a race is the Robert Tepper song "No Easy Way Out".  Yes it's a little dated, but the lyrics speak volumes for any generation.  It is of course most famous for being the song used in the training montage of Rocky IV, which to him is the greatest training scene in the history of cinema.  The line that inspires him the most is when he sings "Though the body says 'stop', the spirit cries 'never'". It's an enduring testimony to the hardships and physical anguish of hard training, but also to the unbreakable will of the athlete. Unlike most other nations, the United States does not have a sports ministry.  As a result, the United States Olympic Committee does not receive any federal funding.  If he can become president for a day, he would reverse that policy.  The U.S. Olympic Team and all the athletes work very hard to serve their country and they represent the United States around the globe.  He would allocate a portion of the federal budget to support their cause. If he can travel back in time, he would go back to 490 B.C. to the Battle of Marathon, in order to see Pheidippides run the 42.2 kilometer distance from Marathon to Athens, for which the world-famous race is based on.

TMA: Totally Misunderstood Award

So, we've pleasantly reminded him to wear the team uniform, including posting reminders on Facebook.  He also entered the stadium the wrong way while winning the race in 16:06, even though he's run the race two times before.

But Steve Mennitt's big TMA this weekend comes from his antics after winning the Jimmy D race, not during it.  The strapping young man from Edison drove two blocks with someone beeping behind him.  While all passengers in the car became frustrated, we all stepped out at the stop sign to see what was going on.

"Your shoes!  Your shoes are on your roof!" yelled the friendly runner from behind, who was obviously not acting out of road rage.

So, within moments, a picture is taken, and here he is...gracing the cover of TMA Times.

Perhaps this is karma for not wearing his team uniform?

Not quite as good, but Josh Neyhart makes his way back to the TMA Drumroll by requesting a team run be pushed back an hour, a request honored by several teammates, all for him to bail out moments before because "it was too hot."  Womp.

We also weren't sure why Mike Anis jumped in the Jimmy D race for the middle mile, then stopped.

Quotes of the Week

"If we're going to do trails, then I'm not wearing a GPS watch. There's nothing I love more than running 7:30's at 6:10 effort."  -Josh Neyhart, submitted by Mike Fonder, regarding Sunday's team run at Washington's Crossing

"Jimmy D Memorial 5k tomorrow, 5k Cross Country Team Championships in 2 weeks, and half marathon team championships in three weeks.

Time to be rewarded for the 600+ miles and speed training I've put in this summer.  It's PR or bust!"  -Brian Weitz, via FB. Indeed, he PR'ed at Jimmy D this past weekend!

"Forgot my toiletry bag on my dresser..But that's ok I have my Garmin watch and running sneakers, all a runner truly needs!"  -Erika Bow, via FB, while on the plane heading to Disney

"I will be taking a position with TomTom Field Account Marketing Manager at Cercone Brown Company."  -Mike Anis, via FB.  We always celebrate a GSTC'er moving up in the world!

"If you look at Lawrenceville Township's website, the following race is listed for September 1st:  Red, White, and Bang!  Kids' Triathlon.

If you look at Compuscore's race listings, the following race is listed of September 1st:  Red, White, and Bang Kids' Triathlon.

Too bad Jay Leno doesn't do headlines anymore."  -Mark Domradsky, via FB

"My neighbor keeps saying he wants to join so I legit knocked on his door (yesterday) to tell him about the long run at Duke Farms."  -Erin LaCosta, via FB message.  As long as you're not wearing a white shirt and holding a book, we are okay with door-to-door recruiting.

"I know I have a big mouth, but how am I going to eat this burrito?"  -Karen Auteri, during Wednesday post-dinner meal.  We aren't making this one up.
