(9/8-9/14): aGSTC Scores 118 points in 5k XC Championships!

THE WEEKLY EMAIL
aGSTC Racks Up 118 Points at
USATF-NJ XC 5k Championships

The team huddles before Sunday's 5k cross country race
In their final race in gold, the adidas Garden State Track Club had sixty-five
participants--nearly 25% of the race--resulting in a massive 121 points accumulated at the 2014 USATF-NJ 5k Cross Country Championships.  Combating a moist, grass course with rolling hills, the times were a bit slow as many are preparing for the looming half marathon next weekend.  Regardless, the club opened up a 164 point lead in the USATF-NJ Overall Grand Prix, as they now stand atop the leader board with 474 total points, with Clifton in a distant second with 310.  With so many groups running so well, let's take a look at them individually.  Oh, and the results are here.

Teams Go 1-2-3, Best XC Result in Club History
Readington- In its best cross country team performance in club history, the aGSTC women dominated the field with a clean sweep of the three team podium spots.  Indeed, the women's team has never looked so strong, healthy, and deep in the beginning of the season as they did this weekend.

Cheyenne Ogletree continued her legendary, untouchable status, rolling to an easy win in 17:45.  The big surprise, however, was the second place finisher--Lauren Rome.  The 24 year old, repping the Beach Enclave, rolled 5:54 miles good enough for an 18:19 finish--the fourth fastest in club history on this course.  Erika Meling was also a big surprise as the number three finisher, rolling in at an all-time cross country PR of 18:41.
Lauren Rome is all smiles after finishing 2nd overall

Overall, the Gold had nine of the top ten finishers: Ogletree, Rome, Meling, Chelsea Callan (4th, 18:46), Michelle Brangan (6th, 18:59), Brittany McCann (7th, 19:03), Nora Norvell (8th, 19:11), Robyn Evangelist (9th, 19:13), Alyssa Douma (10th, 19:19).  Despite the race being so early in the season, Rome, Meling, Brangan, McCann, Norvell, and Evangelist all cracked the team's all-time list on the course.

Other open women finishers included Nicole Salge (19:37), Kim Wernerspach (19:40), Angela Dunn (19:48), Karen Auteri (20:19), Leah Roberts (20:20), Lisa Jones (20:36), Allyson Guieb (21:32), Erin LaCosta (22:30), Sara Diaz (24:35), and Erika Bow (27:48)

Goglas Defends 5k XC Title
Ken Goglas en route to his second USATF-NJ 5k XC Championship

Readington- They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but sometimes that's a good thing.

Kenny Goglas, 7 and 11 years the senior of teammates Kyle Price and Chris Schneider who finished 2nd and 3rd, used the strength of his 75-80 mile weeks to outmuscle the field with a 15:18 win, defending his 2013 title of 15:12.  The only man to average under 5:00 throughout the race, Price (15:34) and Schneider (15:37) also ran tough but faded in the final 400m.

G-State squeezed eight in the top ten, marking the first Grand Prix race whereas the women outperformed the men in the top ten finishers.  Others in the top ten finishers included Stephen Ellwood (5th/15:56), Mike Fonder (6th/16:06), Mike Anis (7th/16:10), Jim Rivers (9th/16:12), and Matt Eder (10th/16:16).  Ellwood and Rivers, both making their Black and Gold debut, ran impressively for their first post-collegiate race.

Masters Men Have Big Day
Andrew Tschesnok thunders to the finish line
Amid all the PRs and huge team performances during Sunday's season opener, there was a glaring team first from the event: the masters men had three top-five team performances in one Grand Prix event.

Andrew Tschesnok was the club's first masters finisher in 18:11, leading the 40s team to a 3rd place finish with 104 points.  In a sport where every second and place counts, the club beat Clifton (105) by just one point, meaning had one Clifton runner passed a gold singlet in the final stretch, the places would have flip-flopped.

Matt Baker was just a straightway behind him, crossing at 18:48 as the second man. Kenny Huryk was third (20:08), Eric Davis fourth (20:16), and Don Weise fifth (20:32).  Rounding out the group was Lee Mooney (21:10) and Donald Meyer (25:27).  The club has never had a 40s team finish so high.

Don Weise after loop one

The 50s team, after originally slated in 4th place, slid down to 5th overall.  Baker was the first man, followed by Don Weise (20:32), Mooney (21:10), Peter Auteri (21:44), Julius Pontecorvo (22:11), Fran Beideman (23:19), and John Bergacs (27:45).

Auteri coming down the finishing chute

Thanks to newcomer John Bergacs, who actually graduated Woodbridge HS with Ken Goglas' dad, the men's 60s team once again had a complete team.  Last year the group dominated the scene, but 2014 saw a new rule: there must be four, not three, scoring members to the team.  The always reliable Auteri, on his birthday nonetheless, was the group's #1 man, with Pontecorvo just behind him.  Beideman was third, and Bergacs rounded the scoring team out.

Masters Women Finish 5th
Erin Varga finishes the race as the #2 master
Michelle Brangan was the second overall masters finisher, leading her team to a 5th place finish on Sunday morning.  Her 18:59 not only ranks her as the 9th club member to ever break 19:00 on the course, it also sets a new club masters record.

Behind her were teammates Erin Varga (25:41), Margarita Ravera (27:04), and Prudence Jones (31:30) to score 37 points.  Unfortunately, they were just one point away from 4th, as the DRR scored 36 to finish one spot ahead.

Top 10 aGSTC XC Performances
This Wasn't Easy, But Here Goes Nothing

10.  Michelle Brangan.  We still don't know how she does it at age 44...but she does.   A second place masters finish and a sub-19:00 finish...wow.

9.  Miggy Jones.  This guy was a phenom in high school, but has run very little since.  For him to go rock a 17:27 after putting in some summer work is downright impressive!  Hashtag, comeback!

8.  Mark Minervini.  Whoa- a huge PR for him- as he talked about "breaking 18:00"--but we didn't think he would do it by 30 seconds!

7.  Alyssa Douma.  It was a rough spring of injury and illness, but she's back!  It was a tough spring not having her healthy, but she's gaining fitness quickly this fall.

6.  Will Alston.  Props for breaking 17:00 for the first time ever.  But not for nothing--with that shaved head--he looks like he should be breaking 14!

5.  Nora Norvell- The Cornell alum is quietly putting in some solid miles, and her nationals-qualifying time this weekend shows.  Hashtag, Princeton Enclave!

4.  John Bergacs.  It's been a long time since he's competed, but his efforts helped our very strong 60s men finish 4th overall.

3.  Cheyenne Ogletree.  Sometime soon we need to do some research.  Is she the most decorated runner in the USATF-NJ Grand Prix history?  Our money says she is.

2.  Ken Goglas.  He makes it look easy, but beating guys right outta college just isn't.

1.  Lauren Rome.  What a huge surprise to see her as the club's #2 finisher, and after a rocky spring fraught with sickness and injury...we applaud her comeback and Herculean effort in her official club debut.

aGSTC Training Plan:
A Word from Coaches Mike and Ken

First off, great job to everybody who came out for the 5k.  It was awesome being out there to race and shake off the rust and see where everybody is at off of base mileage and a few workouts.  The end of the first half of the training plan is approaching and the half marathon is another great opportunity to get out there and race and see where you are with your endurance after seeing where you were in a shorter race this past weekend.

Take some time on a run this week to reflect on what you have done the past 12 weeks and figure out what you need to do in the next 12 weeks to reach your goals for the season.  Please provide us any feedback about what you have liked, disliked, and any ways to improve going forward.

If you need the training document shared with you again, let us know and we can re-send it, remember, this is a google doc that will be continually updated and tweaked through the season so keep checking it.

You can contact them at them at ken_goglas@hotmail.com or michael.fonder@gmail.com.

Cheyenne's Picture of the Week

Kyle's Korner

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly

This week on Kyle's Korner we interviewed the star racing couple Team Gogletree. Ken and Cheyenne are both know for their super fast times and elite competitive status.  They will soon be known for a different even more important status though.

KyleGood afternoon Team Gogletree! Thank you for joining us.

Mr. Goglas:  Great to be here Mr. Price.

Mrs. Ogletree:  Hi Kyle.

Kyle: Before we begin I understand a BIG CONGRATULATIONS are in order! I hear that you both placed first at today's USATF 5K Cross Country Championship Race. Quite an accomplishment to achieve as a couple.

NOOOOOT! Obviously the BIG CONGRATULATIONS are the Engagement!!!

Mrs. Ogletree: Yeah buddy. We are both happy with our win and engagement.

Mr. Goglas: The engagement was the easy part, I knew she would say yes.

KyleAs you should be! Had you both planned on trying to come away with the wins as a "racing celebration" to the engagement?

Mr. Goglas: I plan on winning every race, although that has become increasingly harder as our team gets better.

KyleWell coming from the guy who got second to you it didn't seem that difficult today. How was the lady's race?

Mr. Goglas Nope that was just a nice little surprise. It's fun to win as a couple though. I enjoy it.

Kyle: It's also adorable.

Mrs. Ogletree: My race was fine. Wish I ran a little faster, but I'm happy with it.

KyleWas that Cheyenne?

Mr. Goglas: We are sharing the phone. I will leave it up to the reader as to who is saying what.

KyleUgh.. I'm going to have to guess ha.
Mrs. Ogletree:
I'll end my responses with a meow

KyleAre you both planning a Couple's Repeat Win at the Half Marathon?

Mrs. Ogletree: I hope to win, I'm not sure what Ken plans on doing. Meow.

Mr. Goglas: I will do my best, I am probably in 1:09-1:10 shape. I hope I am in the mix.

KyleSeems like the Meow is a bit more confident for gold. Well we've had our Commander in Chief get down on one knee recently and now the hands down fastest couple this team has also swapped some shiny hardware. Who do you two think will be lucky number three? Or at least hope to see?

Mrs. Ogletree: I'm going with Tony and LeAnn. Meow.

KyleOoo good choice! I suppose only time will tell, but it would be pretty cool to have three big rocks all at one XC banquet. So how have your training plans been shaping up?

Mr. Goglas: Good, I have been hitting 80 mpw and the workouts have been progressing as expected.

Mrs. Ogletree: I hit around 50 mpw. I don't like training. Meow.

Kyle: You both are doing extremely well early in the season so clearly you know what's best for yourselves. What are your plans for later in the season?

Mr. Goglas: My big goals for the season are a sub 25 8k at Ashenfelter and improve on my 98th place finish from last years' Club National meet.

Mrs. Ogletree: My goals are to run really well at the 10k in May and to try very hard to enjoy running. Meow.

Kyle: Any big non-running plans?

Mr. Goglas: Well we have a wedding and honeymoon to plan, those are kinda big.

Kyle: Thaaaat's what I was getting at. Any ideas?

Mr. Goglas: Looking towards next fall; probably somewhere in Central Jersey. Then head to some resort in the Caribbean (ideas welcomed on that side of things).

Kyle: I'm sure there's plenty of people that can offer you some good ideas if they are dedicated enough to read till the end of this interview.

Well I'd like to thank both of you for participating in the weeks interview. And again congratulations on today's win and the even bigger win you both shared this past week!

Mr. Goglas: Thanks Mr. Price.

Mrs. Ogletree: Thanks Kyle. Meows to you.

Kyle: MEOW! Tune in next week to see who we interview meow!

The aGSTC Gold Star

by Ashwin Anantharaman

Conon O'Brien

Conor is a freshmen at Rutgers University who is joining GSTC with the hope of networking with new people and improving is PRs. He believes people should run because once you get over the "running sucks" hump, it is the best thing to do to both clear your mind and stay in shape.

He is pretty new to organized running and will experience his first Cross Country season this year. He has enjoyed success on the track and looks forward to dropping his Prs this season! If Connor could be on any TV showm he would choose Shark Tank. The interesting part about this decision is that he would choose to be one of the sharks. He feels if he was in a chair next to Mark Cuban, that it would help him feel pretty good about his path. If he could invent a device to help him find things when he loses them, he would love to. He loses car keys and important papers daily and finds it very annoying.

 TMA: Totally Misunderstood Award

It would have been nice if the timing company was set up and ready for Ken Goglas and the other top finishers at the 5k XC race....although it was nice, after a few days, that all times and places were finalized.  We think?
