Cheyenne's Tip of the Week

Never do anything you're going to regret later
Thank you and you're welcome

Kyle's Korner

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

This week on Kyle's Korner we interviewed the North Enclave Captain Mrs. Karen Auteri. Known for her preference to wine over water and long distance races, we talked a bit about what exactly these captains do.

Kyle: Hello Karen

Mrs. Auteri: Good Evening Kyle.

Kyle: Ok so first off what's your club title? You're an enclave captain correct?

Mrs. Auteri: Yes, I am the captain of the North Enclave.

Kyle: For people that don't know what enclave captains do, what is that like?

Mrs. Auteri: I basically plan group runs so that members of the enclave have people to run with throughout the week. I am lucky that my dad (a masters team member) already had 3 runs planned in north jersey every week. I also inform members about local running store runs and we just set up 2 additional runs in Bergen county. The North Enclave currently has 7 runs to choose from each week, plus the Sunday team run.. I also try to match up people to run together based on training pace and location.

Kyle: Wow I didn't even know you were responsible for all of that. So what does Chuck do besides con Edsel into walking Duffy with all of you enclave captains doing so much? Don't answer that. So how is the North looking depth wise in terms of the infamous Enclave Brouhaha Competitions?

Mrs. Auteri: Haha! The north is looking good. We have a new member Joe Mummert who was the first GSTC male to finish in the Verizon corporate 5k 2 weeks ago, plus we have Rob Nihen. And Dave dos Santos recently moved to the North Enclave headquarters, but I don't know if he will be racing in the fall. It was tough to lose Cheyenne to the Central Enclave though. Ken and her should move up north and then we will be a real powerhouse!

Kyle: Yes team Gogletree is certainly a major player in the Central Enclave's line-up. RANDOM QUESTION! Many of our club members know that one of your favorite beverages is a glass or two of wine, you've even done races that involved sampling some of it. But what is your favorite food?

Mrs. Auteri: Yes, we go through A LOT of wine. We actually are supplying all of the wine bottles for Allie Dublinski's wedding center pieces! My favorite food is Alaskan king crab drenched in butter. But it has to be off the boat in Alaska.

Kyle: Ooo! I hope Dave can keep up with your sophisticated tastes. Are you looking forward to Club Nats at Lehigh in December? And how is your training coming along?

Mrs. Auteri: I'm lucky that Dave is a better cook than I'll ever be! I am looking forward to Club Nats, but it is not my goal race. I kind of hate cross country, but I am excited that nationals is on a course that I ran several times in college. I've been out of college for 11 years now, so my focus from a cross country and middle distance track runner has changed a lot over the past few years. My goal race of the fall is the Steamtown Marathon in October. Training is going very well so far; my goal is a sub-3:05, which is the men's BQ time. I figured it would be a fun goal to strive for. After the marathon, I will take a few days (maybe a week) to recover and then get into a nationals training plan. I will basically do whatever Mike Fonder tells me to do, haha!

Kyle: Fonder is a pretty special guy. Well that's great that you've got your goals lined up and know what you want and how to get to them. My focus has changed a lot in the last 11 years as well; I focus less. But hey that's all the time we have this week so thank you very much for talking with us!

Mrs. Auteri: Does "us" refer to multiple personalities?! Haha!

Kyle: Mmm someone is catching on to our humor...  I mean MY humor!

Mrs. Auteri: Well have a good night!

Kyle: We shall! Log on next week to see who we interview!

aGSTC TRIVIA TIME:

Post-Sunday Team Run Brunch

This weekend, we ventured to Duke Farms for the team run Sunday morning.  As you can see by this picture, there were over forty people in attendance of all shapes, sizes, abilities, and paces.  We enjoy taking creepy pictures of them when they aren't looking.

After the run, the club tradition is to eat at a local diner.  While several folks sat at several tables, we sat with the group of, from left to right, Mark Parisen, Steve Mennitt, Andrea Reilly, Erika Bow, Dr. Michael Anis, Esq., and Peter Bolgert.

Lots of interesting stuff comes out during a ninety minute meal, so let's play the trivia game with six more of our members.

1.  Who has a friend who claims to be a time traveler?

2.  Who grew up one block away from the infamous first anthrax post office in Hamilton, NJ?

3.  Who hates Cincinnati chili, yet claims "it's the number one city for parks in America"?

4.  Who was beat by a joggler (juggler + runner) in his.her first marathon?

5.  Who enjoys studying the German language in his/her free time?

6.  Who ordered the eggs benedict?

7.  Who ran the Disney Marathon twice?

8.  Who is an avid reader of NJ.com--who also makes many comments on stories?

9.  Who works for Rutgers University in the financial aid office?

10.  Who spent fifteen minutes showing us pictures of his car on his phone?

GOLD STAR

New aGSTC Member: Erika Bow

Erika is joining GSTC because she is trying to meet people with similar interests as her, namely running, being active, and trying toeat and live healthy. If you are new at running, her advice is to just start with baby steps.  When she got started, she ran about 1 block and then the next time, would see if she could get to the next stop sign, or the next tree. As tough as it was she kept at it and would eventually run a marathon. Running is a great activity to take up because it's really the cheapest. The more involved we get, the more we spend on races, cool clothes, gadgets, and most importantly great shoes.  Running is great because the runner community is supportive of all levels of skill.

The first 5k she ever did was the Revlon charity 5k in NYC - it was not timed, just an event that raised money for research on women's cancers. She signed up with friends in memory of a sorority sister who unfortunately lost to ovarian cancer.  She was so out of shape and had to walk at least half of it. She was passed by runners younger and older than her wearing shirts that labeled them cancer survivors.  She was inspired by these types of people, runners and non-runners alike -  the ones who have more challenges thanher and are still pushing along and smiling.  It reminded her to appreciate her own ability and progress, and be mindful that everyone has their own journey and struggles.

Her big goal is to to get faster! She has spent the last 4 years or so working on distance, with her only desire to finish. She has a couple halfs lined up soon (Disneyland Aug 31 and Trenton Nov 8), but her focus is gradually switching to more speed work and looking to take a break from distance after those and focus on the 5k. She is hopeful that she can really make some progress.  She won her first ever medal for a short race (1st place in her age group in a small 5k of about 150 runners) back in April, and it felt AMAZING.  She wants more of that.

TEAM EVENT: FRIDAY RUN, BBQ
On Friday night, we will start our team run at 6:00pm at 944 Hermann Road (No. Bruns).  Shortly afterward, we will have yet another team BBQ.  It's gonna be fun!  Park at the library two blocks down if there isn't room in the driveway!!

RACE RESULTS

While we know most of you are increasing volume and keeping intensity low, every once in a while we all get bored and wanna break up the monotony with a summer race.  Here's what we got the past few weeks....

Sandora Wins South Jersey 5k

Brittany Sandora hopped in the "Hot Run in the Summertime 5k" in Woodbury, using it as a workout, and won in 18:53.  We love winning, and we love really original names of road races!

Stavrou 2nd in AG

Diana Stavrou finished second in her age group in the Taconic Biathlon in Mahopac, NY on August 3rd.  After finishing the three mile run 25:45, she finished the half mile swim in 13:45, resulting in a 38:40 total time.  This was good enough for 19th out of 49 competitors.

Jones Races 5 Miler in MA

Masters co-captain Prudence Jones ran the Marathon Sports 5-Miler in Weston MA on July 24.  She finished with a time of 53:50.

River to Sea Results

Two teams competed with aGSTC members.  One included Bri Teichmann and Kristen Prazenica, and the other included Kyle Price, Tim Paziora, Ken Walsh, Jon Lindenauer. We only have received results from the latter team.

The Ramapo alumni started at 9:25, with Paziora and Walsh averaging 6:40 pace for their first two legs.  Lindenauer then blasted an eight miler at 5:15 pace, with Price then holding 4:52's for a 3.9 mile leg.  Dan Gomez then ran 7:00 flat for 9.2, followed by a 6:00 effort by Walsh and some guy named Brian, who exchanged doing mile repeats for fourteen miles in the "Wild Card" leg.  Lindenauer followed this with 5:20s for his 6.6 leg, whereas Price finished things off with a 5:11 pace for 7.9 miles.  We asked for a place and time, but we never received them

TMA: Totally Misunderstood Award

Prior to his impressive River to Sea performance, Jon Lindenauer stayed the night at the GSTC Headquarters.

However, Kyle was having him sleep on the floor.  Why do that, when we have nine mattresses in the garage from when we were housing the national women Vietnamese 4x400?

So, we walked outside with Jon to help him select and carry a mattress of his choice.

That said, Jon gets a TMA nomination for leaving the mattress in the living room--not returning it to its appropriate place when finished using it the next mor
