(3/30-4/5): The IRS Hauls Away aGSTC

THE WEEKLY EMAIL

Please pay your taxes.  It just isn't worth it otherwise.
IRS Puts aGSTC Out of Business for
One Calendar Year

North Brunswick- After years of dodging the feds, the Garden State Track Club was finally caught with their hand in the proverbial cookie jar.

After a thorough audit of the GSTC books, several red flags went up, the biggest including the syphoning of thousands of dollars toward an undisclosed piece of property in North Brunswick, NJ.  Club officials were mum on the incident, as no members of the Executive Committee or Leadership Team responded to emails or calls requesting a comment.

For the misuse of non-profit funds, all senior leadership have been forced to step down, and the club will lose its operational status for one calendar year.   To continue acting as a 501c3, the club will need to re-apply for not-for-profit status, showing that a newly elected leadership will handle the fiscal responsibilities in a more ethical way.

"We have seen some smoke and mirrors before, but this case takes the cake.  In fact, I actually found an authentic smoke-producing machine device in the second floor apartment, beside the bed of one Steven Mennitt," IRS lead investigator Ben Dover told the Associated Press, coughing vigorously as he exited 944 Hermann Road.

Other IRS red-flags included:
1.  The selling of bootleg Tom-Tom watches, although many are convinced they are real but just don't work very well.

2.  The actual course maps of Road Relays, Gorilla 5k, and the College Ave Mile, revealing the actual distances to be 10.4, 2.7, and .82 miles, respectably.

3.  An illegitimate barber shop for mohawk hair cuts identified on the first floor, with Backpage postings named as "Kyle's Kuts."

4.  An illegitimate massage parlor identified on the second floor, with Craig's List postings named as "Erika's Enchanting Excitement."

5.  Receipts from the Turkish government for the lone competition rights of Atilla Sabahoglu.

Schneider, Martins Tapped to
Lead Club in 2016

In its impromptu Leadership Team meeting Sunday, urgently called to resolve the aforementioned matters, club membership meeting quorum unanimously voted in recent ESU grad Chris Schneider as the new club president to replace embattled and disgraced former president Chuck Schneekloth.  In a prophetic Facebook post weeks ago, Schneider actually predicted the downfall while exalting himself as the next carrier of the torch.

"My experience working at Coke will help me bring the club to a new level," he stated, between sips of apple juice.  "Oh wait, I don't have to pass a spelling, drug, or IQ test for this position, do I?"

Zak Martins was tapped as the new Vice President to replace long-standing VP Ken Goglas.  "One of my strongest qualities is loyalty," Martins said in a brief phone interview.  "You don't need to look any farther than my experiences at Ohio State.  I've spent five years here working on my degree, and I have another three to go.  I intend to bring that same loyalty to the Garden State Track Club.   Oh, and I like women statues.  They can be so life-like."

Goglas also didn't immediate respond to requests for comment, but hours later he did post a picture of a break dancing cat on Cheyenne's wall.

Kyle's Korner
by Kyle Price

 Atilla Sabahoglu

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

For this weeks edition we decided to get ourselves a bit more cultured. The Turkish Tornado, Atilla "The Hun" Sabahoglu, gave us some insight on to where he came from, where he is now, and where he plans to be. Always smiling and usually wearing his own custom GSTC shirt, which he has replicated upon special request, if you don't know him from coming to team races well now's your chance to be introduced.
Kyle: Merhaba Atilla! Thank you for joining us!
Mr. Sabahoglu: Merhaba Amigo;)
Kyle: How has our favorite black and gold Turkish runner been enjoying the weather finally warming up?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I'm really enjoying a lot since I can start wearing my Wibram Fivefingers :) the only problem I  have now the pollens that are making me sick :(
Kyle: Mm yes nothing can ruin a nice long run like seasonal allergies.
Mr. Sabahoglu: Yes, exactly!
Kyle: Well besides the 7th mile sniffles how has the training been going? You came off quite a strong Fall with that Gran Prix Win.
Mr. Sabahoglu: I'm not in great shape like last year but I'm getting back in shape slowly. Hopefully, I can get better in couple weeks!
Kyle: It was a rough winter for training.
Mr. Sabahoglu: I think last winter was worse!
Kyle: Good point. So what are you gearing up for this spring?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I'll take it easy this year since I got a lot going on at home ( construction etc). I'm planning to run good road races but nothing so specific for now. I need to see how fast I'm going to get in couple weeks so i can plan accordingly.

Kyle: Going for a repeat grand prix win?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I don't think it will happen this year. I'm guessing Mario will win it this year :()
Kyle: Let's not get too hasty. Just one race so far ha.
Mr. Sabahoglu: I have 21 years experience, I can guess pretty good. If you keep your shape at the sane level, you should win it!
Kyle: I might need some help from Luigi.
Mr. Sabahoglu: :P
Kyle: So are you only looking at road races or will we see you sneak on the track before summer?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I might, it depends how bad my allergies will be...
Kyle: Damn histamine reactions. Is this an American ailment or did you have the allergies in Turkey as well?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I had little in Turkey. It didn't effect my running. Here it turns to asthma so kills me totally. Any way i do my best all the time. It is what it is. As far as I know there's no coincidence in life. If I 'm having this, there must be a reason!
Kyle: Foreign foliage! When did you make the big move?
Mr. Sabahoglu: In 2002.
Kyle: So this is lucky 13! Why did you decide to move?
Mr. Sabahoglu: Actially 13 is my luck number! One of my friends was coming here for a marathon so I decided to try my first marathon in US
Kyle: And you fell in love with our wonderful colorful rushed loud personalities?
Mr. Sabahoglu: YESS!!!
Kyle: How was that transition? I'll admit I know little about Turkish culture.
Mr. Sabahoglu: I'm surprised! How do you not know about Turkish culture? The transition was ok. The best part I liked was the races! I could find a race every weekend. I could only find 3-4 a year in Turkey...
Kyle: Well now I know the culture doesn't enjoy frivolous running as much as ours. But you must have!
Mr. Sabahoglu: Yes, I do!!!
Kyle: Did you run for school when growing up there or was it always an on your own activity?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I started running when I was in middle school in 1993. I used to play soccer too but running became my favorite!
Kyle: Yet another soccer player turned distance runner. It's a new millennium theme. I'm stating it now.
Mr. Sabahoglu: :D

Kyle: What do you do when you aren't running?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I spend time with my family, read books, fix my home and fix Iphones. I also go to work 5 times a week.
Kyle: Sounds like you're busy 25/8. What work do you do?
Mr. Sabahoglu: Yes, I am. I am the business administrator at Central Jersey College Prep Charter School.
Kyle: Possibly youth running recruitment spot?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I tried a running club at the school but didn't see that much interest!
Kyle: Hey at least you tried! I could definitely see a future Coach S in the works.
Mr. Sabahoglu: Yes, I can coach elite runners! When I ran 14:44 in 5k I was coaching myself. I have been coaching myself for a long time!
Kyle: Major self dedication right there.
Mr. Sabahoglu: Yeah.
Kyle: Well that's all the time we have for this week. Thank you for speaking with us!
Mr. Sabahoglu: Thank you for having me!
Kyle: It was my Turkish Delight!
Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Welcoming New Members

Megan Coakley
By Bri Teichmann

Megan is a freshman at Rutgers this year.  Originally from Tinton Falls, NJ, she went to Red Bank Catholic high school.  She was formerly part of the Rutgers cross country/track and field team but found it really hard to balance running for the school and her academics.

She's a long distance runner and usually runs the 2 mile or mile on the track and 5k and 6k for cross.  She loves trail running at places like Holmdel Park.

Some of her hobbies include all other types of sports, watching movies and hanging out with her friends. Fun fact about Megan!  She has a twin sister and who is her roommate at Rutgers, too.

Welcome, Megan!!

Weekend Results

#SouthEnclave
Adrenaline 5k Results
Ooops!  We totally forgot about the Adrenaline 5k last week.  And, being the true gentlemen and ladies that they are, the South Enclave didn't say a word about the innocent oversight.

Shawn D'Andrea  opened up his season with a fine 15:48 for 17th, South Enclave Captain Adin Mickle ran 16:10, and funny enough, Abel Bermudez and Robyn Evangelist finished one second apart, 18:24-18:25.

Club Penn Relayz
RRC Women1st, Men 4th in Event Debut

The beautiful weather on Sunday at Franklin Field wasn't the only thing that took 12 college club teams by surprise, so did the dominant force of the Rutgers Running Club. By the end of the day, the RRC women came out 1st overall, and the men 4th.

The women came in 1st in the 4x800 (Sam Haley, Monika Juzwiak, Ally Black, Erin LaCosta), 1st in the 4x200 (Black, Colleen McDowell, LaCosta, Haley), 1st in the 4x400 (LaCosta, Black, Haley, McDowell), and 4th (Black) and 8th (LaCosta) in the open mile.

The men came in 3rd in the 4x200 (Jack Lewis, Pierre Checo, Zach Blanco, Melvin Delvillar), 2nd (Delvillar, Blanco, Checo, Lewis) and 5th (Rob Klink, Conor O'Brien, Ezra Chefitz, Ryan Degregorio) in the 4x400,  3rd in the DMR (David Fett, Checo, O'Brien, Degregorio), and 1st in the open mile (Fett). Notable mentions; 9th in the 4x800 (Blanco, Chefitz, Klink, Delvillar), 10th in 4x1600 (Klink, Chefitz, O'Brien, Devvillar), 18th (Jose Grullon) 19th (Nick Dawe) and 20th (Michael Garcia) in the open mile.

Leitz Wins AG
NYC- Aya Leitz won her age group at the March Madness Duathlon in Central Park this weekend, finishing in 1:19:13.

VanLiew Uncorks Big Throw
San Diego- Tim VanLiew, in his debut in the adidas black and gold, unleashed a monster toss of 234' in the San Diego State Invitational this Saturday.  VanLiew, 10th in America in 2014, is certainly among the nation's top javelin throws this spring thus far.

Seeley Prs in 5k
PA- Tim Seeley rolled to a 2.5 second PR, breaking an old college best, by running 15:12 this weekend at Widener's Danny Curan Invite.  This qualifies him for the USATF-NJ travel stipend for club nationals, held this year in San Francisco, CA.

TMA: The Return
Steve Mennitt has been eating rice and burritos for two weeks.  Why?

You know, spilling water on a laptop requires putting it in rice for an extended period of time, and then, what are you going to do with all that rice?

Pole vaulter Colleen McDowell trains in Buccleuch Park this weekend #GSTC

A Message from the President
If you're new to the club, this is the yearly April Fool's Issue.  Chris Schneider can barely handle a can of club soda let alone the Garden State Track Club.
