Enclave Brouhaha

UPDATE

Masters Week!
*******Based on feedback from Facebook page, we will be counting all men and women 40+ as double points this week!!! *******

You are no longer uniformed.

SCOREBOARD

#gold division

1.  CENTRAL ENCLAVE (93 points)
13 (Week 1) + 32 (Week 2) + 48 (Week 3)
The Central Enclave continues to rack up big points with more than one enclave run a day.  They are starting to get a little cocky, too--sticking their tongue out, flexing their muscles, making faces at the camera, etc.  Will any enclave step up and take down the big bad boys (and girls) of the Central Enclave?  Looks like Adin Mickle was wrong; there is more to NJ than just "North" and "South" Jersey!

Jessica PK, far left, taunts the other enclaves to be as awesome as central!
no idea why more ladies didn't attend this run

Extra points if, next time, these Miami Heat uniforms are photoshopped out

2.  PRINCETON ENCLAVE (75 points)
9 (Week 1) + 21 (Week 2) + (Week 3) 45
A solid week of selfless for the defending Brouhaha Champions.  However, they're gonna need a lot more than cross training and Matt Baker vacation selfies to take the lead from the almighty Central Enclave.

Much better, Greta.  Thanks.

3.  NORTH ENCLAVE (60 points)
10 (Week 1) + 15 (Week 2) + 35 (Week 3)
A huge week for the North, as Enclave Captain Katie Castro has her troops fired up.  Sadly, they fall just short of second place, putting the Original Brouhaha Champions in a precarious position.  That aside, they seem to fueled by a Darth Vadar-esque resentment toward the Central Enclave, epitomized by Kyle Mahoney's post, "I can barely run but I'm tired of the Central Enclave getting all of the points."

+3 for North

4.  WILD WEST ENCLAVE (23 points)
10 (Week 1) + 0 (Week 2) + 13 (Week 3)
After falling asleep last week, the West has been aroused.  Wait, that came out wrong.  You know what we mean.  While Enclave Captain Karen Auteri nurses a sore hip, can Chris Schneider, Ellen, Will, and others fill her shoes?  Only time will tell as the #wildwest attempts to pull themselves out of the basement.
There were some westerners at the team run on Sunday

We'll count this too
Track workout in the west!

#black division

1.  MORRISTOWN ENCLAVE (26 points)
4 (Week 1) + 4 (Week 2) + 18 (Week 3)
The Morristown Enclave has consistency.  Big groups runs every Wednesday night and Saturday morning at the Morristown Running Company.  The biggest question lingers: will enclave captain Heather remember to take the picture?

2.  JERSEY CITY ENCLAVE (17 POINTS)
3 (Week 1) + 5 (Week 2) + 9 (Week 3)
Almost doubling their score from last week, K-Praz, Bieber, and the Leitzes are, in the words of New Kids on the Block, hangin' tough.  They aren't fare away from taking the Black Division title, but it's gonna take some hustle and muscle.
Dan, Karl, and Will are all smiles

Some lovely ladies from Jersey City

Incredibly, Karl got Justin Beiber to attend an enclave run.  Good job, Karl.

3.  FLORHAM PARK ENCLAVE (16 PTS)
2 (Week 1) + 0 (Week 2) + 14 (Week 3)
Mark our words: the Florham Park Enclave is the dark horse to win the Black Division.  It's possible, and enclave captain Joe Jacobs can bring a twenty-person group run to the store easily.  Watch out, Morristown and Jersey City!  It ain't over til it's over!
Great group run...from last week, so no extra points for the ladies.
Someone buy Aimee a new shirt!  Group run from the Sneaker Factory in Florham Park.

4.  SOUTH ENCLAVE (15 points)
3 (Week 1) + 2 (Week 2) + 10 (Week 3)
The South is just one point away from a podium finish in the Black Division.  Anything can happen.  Every point counts.  Rumor has it there is a big group run Thursday evening.  Watch out JC...watch out.
For some reason, South Enclave Captain Adin Mickle throws up the "N" for North Enclave
The Ladies of the South can be very powerful in this contest.  The guys, on the other hand....a tad creepy.

4.  BEACH ENCLAVE (4 points)
2 (Week 1) + 2 (Week 2) + 0 (Week 3)
Someone needs to step up in the Beach Enclave.  No runs this week.  Big thumbs down.  The only enclave to go backwards like our hairline.  Step it up beach!

GREAT Pictures, but...
We are sorry that Pat got lost on her run, or saw a ghost, or something, but pictures have to be two or more people.
 NO POINTS
Last week he was running with balloons.  This week he's running with his daughter.  She's very cute- perhaps the apple does fall far from the tree- but she isn't a club member.
NO POINTS

For goodness gracious, someone call the authorities.  If not for the mustache, then for that tank top.

NO POINTS

Heather missed the run, so instead, she took this picture where the group WAS five minutes earlier.  We love ya, but..

NO POINTS

RULES
1.  Advertise the run on Enclave page beforehand
2.  Take picture of runners
3.  Post on FB page

Enclaves get 2-5 points for every run; two is the minimum of runners, and five is the maximum number of points.

Winning enclaves in each division will win adidas gear by season's end.

Points will be totaled up every week in the weekly email.

Club Nationals 2015:
San Francisco!!!!

The Leadership Team met on Tuesday, July 7th, and agreed on the following items:

1.  If an athlete hits the 82% PLP standard, they will receive a $300 stipend toward their flight.

2.  Any athlete hitting the 82% PLP standard (for 5k this is 15:40 men; 17:57 women), the club will pay for lodging, entry fee,  and van transportation there.

3.  To qualify for this support, the athlete must run two of the six team races this fall.

4.  Exceptions will be made, by the LT,  on a case-by-case basis if two team races aren't met

5.  Any athlete on the "A" or "B" team will receive lodging, van transportation, and meet entry support if they also meet the "two team race" standard

6.  Anyone who "belongs in the race" (sub-20 women; sub-17 men) may go and run on an aGSTC team!  The more the merrier!  Last year we broke the USATF record with eleven scoring teams!!!

7.  Any questions should be directed to the gardenstatetrackclub@gmail.com email, whereas it will be redirected to the LT for consideration.

This is your governing body.  They work hard.

Kyle's Corner

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

This week on Kyle's Korner we spoke to Princeton Enclave member Steven "Python" Jackson. A frequenter of club runs, you may have seen him at any number of Central, Princeton, or group long runs over the years. He's put in many miles over his long career, but it's still growing and he's always up for company while getting in the distance. You don't have to "put the squeeze" on this team playing club member.

Kyle: Hello Steve thank you for joining us!

Mr. Jackson: No problem. Glad to chat with you!

Kyle: Let's get a little background established. When did your running career begin?

Mr. Jackson: I started out as a tennis player, but as my career went on I tended to get into long, grinding matches, so after 9th grade I decided/was persuaded to start training for cross country in the fall. After a few races I was hooked on the challenge and camaraderie of the sport, and decided to drop tennis for track. And I'm still running, what is it now, 12 years later?!

Kyle: I tried tennis at summer camp once. What high school did you run for and how was your career there?

Mr. Jackson: I went to a small private school near Rochester, NY (The Harley School) that joined with a nearby school (Allendale Columbia) for athletics. My first year I was still getting my bearings and improved a ton nearly every time I went out - I think I started near 22:50 and ended up in the high 17s for 5k. My junior season I had some injury troubles to start out but managed to stay in the mid-high 17s for most of the races. For my senior year I got in the low 17s and qualified for the state meet in the division for the smallest schools. In track, I think my biggest accomplishment was at the state qualifier meet, where I was the slowest entrant in the small school division and managed to get second in the 3200 in 10:08, which was a 15 second PR.

Kyle: I love Cinderella stories! Great achievements by young Steven! So did you carry on through college?

Mr. Jackson: College didn't go so great for me, mostly because of injury troubles. My freshman year, though, went pretty well. My best race was probably my first 8k at Franklin Park in Boston, where I ran 27:03, but there were some other pretty good ones on tougher courses too. The season ended on an interesting note, which I can go into if you want - it relates to why I get bad poison ivy reactions now. Anyway, I had some minor injury problems in the winter from slipping around and such, then in the spring I hurt my achilles tendon slipping on a patch of ice just before spring break started, and that injury haunted me for a while.

After that, the high point of my collegiate running career was the summer before my junior year (during which I of course ran no races), where I put in a solid summer of training (while still dealing with the achilles issues a bit) before messing up my left foot pretty badly stepping on a rock while a few miles out on a long run. The guys I'd been training with ended up at/near All-American and 25 flat for 8k, so that was a pretty huge bummer, but also let me know that I could improve if I got a few breaks and trained more intelligently. Anyway, so I don't ramble on for pages, I'll keep it short and just say that my senior year I didn't break 30 for 8k despite being healthy and running several races.

Kyle: Poison ivy.. Devil plant. Well that's certainly a less than ideal college career for a runner, but it speaks volumes to your dedication and integrity that you trained through all of that and are still running now.

Mr. Jackson: Thanks!

Kyle: How did you find the good ole GSTC?

Mr. Jackson: About two and a half years ago, after a hiatus in which I got fat and out of shape, I decided to start running with the Princeton Running Club (shout out to Ryan Karnes! Chuck loves him) to give me a bit more accountability and get back to the team aspect of things. Peter Bolgert also ran with PRC a decent amount back then, and after I managed a successful season for them, he suggested I look into joining GSTC. So shortly thereafter I joined and I think my first GSTC event was the 3k at the John Hay Memorial track meet.

Kyle: What's been your biggest running accomplishment since joining?

Mr. Jackson: I think actually qualifying for USATF club track nationals at the John Hay meet in my first race for the club. While my "race" ended up being more like a time trial as I was alone for almost all of it, I felt effortlessly smooth despite the heat (I think it was about 90 degrees that day) and sun, and ended up running faster than I ever would have believed possible at the beginning of my training (about 4 months previously). It was one of those race experiences that you hope to recreate someday, though I haven't been able to rekindle the magic quite like that yet.

My race at nationals itself didn't go well, but being there for the team victory was still an amazing experience.

Kyle: What are you hoping to accomplish this year?

Mr. Jackson: I've had a pretty good summer of training so far. Could be better with more doubles and more consistent core work and basic speed stuff, but things have been going well so far. This means that if I stay reasonably healthy through the end of cross country I'll have my longest consistent stretch of training since probably my freshman year of cross country, so I'm excited to see what I can do!

With that said, most of my goals this year won't relate directly to racing. The main things will be to apply everything I've learned to stay healthy, and also to get to know the people in the club better than I have in years past. If those happen, then I'll be happy and having fun and the racing should take care of itself!

Kyle: That's my mantra! Good things happen when you're having fun. Any aspirations of traveling to San Fran for Club Nats?

Mr. Jackson: Definitely. It would be nice if I'm able to hit the PLP so it's a bit cheaper to get out there, but there's no way I'll be missing out on it!

Kyle: Awesoooome! I wish you luck

Mr. Jackson: Thanks! And good luck to you as well!

Kyle: Gracias! Well that's all the time we have this week. Thank you for speaking with us!

Mr. Jackson: It was a pleasure! "Burmese Python" is trending because one got captured. I might need to take a trip south to save my brother. Talk to you soon!

Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

ANNOUNCEMENT #1

Diana Angi is GSTC's New
Steady Strider Co-Captain!!!

Diana Angi has been a loyal, consistent member of the GSTC for several years now.  After a need for help with our Steady Strider group, several Leadership Team members suggested Angi be selected as the new Leadership Team member to help Prudence Jones coordinate runs with our 9-12 minute milers.  She has accepted the offer, and the club is psyched to have her stepping into a leadership position!

ANNOUNCEMENT #2

GSTC Hosting Nationals XC Tune-Up

On Sunday morning, November 15th, the GSTC will be hosting a tune-up cross country race for USATF Club XC Nationals held in San Francisco this December.

The race will be held at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia's historic Belmont Park.  The women will race a 6k at 12:00 noon, while the men will race 8k at 1:00pm.

At the time of publication, three teams have committed to competing: Washington DC's Georgetown Running Club and NY State's Genesee Valley Harriers.  Over a dozen more teams are in talk with the GSTC to fit the race in their schedule.

It's time to pay your 2015 Team Dues.
The club has many operating expenses that depend on membership dues.

Peter's Puzzler
Peter Bolgert is an esteemed member of the club who was on the DMR that won the club national title in 2013 for the aGSTC.  A former Marquette standout in the steeplechase, he is now halfway through a PhD program in the plasma physics department at Princeton University.  In hopes to raise the intellectual rigor to the club's weekly email, he designs weekly puzzlers to sharpen the wit, acumen, and intellect of the club...while wearing this onesey.

He left for Germany without leaving a puzzler.

Anis Angle

Mike Anis is an aging cranky, albeit beloved and long-standing member of the club who takes great pride in his beard and his onesey.  In full transparency, we should probably also add he's never been asked to write an angle.  We just do it for him.

"That's fine.  People enjoy the angle better anyway."

TMA

On Saturday, August 1, the newly formed American Track League (ATL), in its second year, had a professional meet on August 1 in Atlanta.

The GSTC's Miki Barber competed in it.  Excited to see how she did, we started looking everywhere.

However, there are no results.  Anywhere.  We went to the website...which has a results tab.  It brings up meets from 2014.

We emailed the race director three days ago.  No reply.

Trying to imagine an NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. that would have a weekly contest...and no results days later on its website.

Quotes of the Week

"The word 'the' is so unnecessary in the English language.  Why can't I just say 'I want table' ?"  -Mike Anis, ranting after a Sunday team run.  See what you miss if you don't go to these?

"You're surround by an airport (trust me it's safe) a cemetery (they're dead), a golf course (slow and old) and a quiet community. Looks safe! Can't wait to run here. Amazing."  -Josh Neyhart, via FB, defending Weequahic Park in Newark.

"Bonus points to the whole club for having to wait so long for the weekly emails."  -Kyle Mahoney, via FB, regarding the summer point scoring system

"No OSU gear today? I can't imagine why."  -Brian Weitz, to Zak Martins via FB, who conveniently stopped wearing OSU gear in the wake of yet another OSU scandal...for getting paid too much money for their summer jobs.  Two of these athletes have already been previously busted for accepting cash and free tattoos.

Missed the article?  Please, read it here.

"Great job, great people, great run."  -Rob Liberto, via FB regarding an enclave run

"Rule #1: Never apologize to Chuck. He's probably doing something worse than you."  -Kyle Mahoney to Billy Duran over FB.
