1. If an athlete hits the 82% PLP standard, they will receive a $300 stipend toward their flight.
2. Any athlete hitting the 82% PLP standard (for 5k this is 15:40 men; 17:57 women), the club will pay for lodging, entry fee, and transportation there.

Kyle's Corner Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly. This week on the Korner we did a bit of drive-by interviewing and spoke briefly with three of our club's very talented elite athletes that competed at Nationals in Eugene Oregon two weeks ago. Carmen Graves (Steeplechase), Christina Epps (Triple Jump), and Tim Van Liew (Javelin) all gave us a little info on their individual experiences on the west coast. A little fun in the sun while impressively getting it done. Carmen Graves Kyle: How did it feel to qualify for and attend such a prestigious track meet? Ms. Graves: It's always an honor to compete with the best track and field runners in the country. I never take the opportunity for granted. This is my second year competing at the USATF Champs and the atmosphere is uncomparable to any other track meet I've ever competed at. It was my first time competing at Hayward Field in Eugene, OR and I soon realized they don't call it Track Town USA for nothing. Kyle: We're you excited about competing in a new event for yourself there? Ms. Graves: This is my second year competing in the 3k steeplchase. It's an exciting event and there is a lot of room for error. But on the flip side, there is just as much room for improvement. I am especially excited about the potential I have in the event, being that the steeplchase as well as distance events in general are so new to me. You've got to remember that I was an 800 meter chick in College. Kyle: With the experience you gained this year, what are you looking to accomplish next year at this meet? Ms. Graves: The big goal is always to qualify for the Olympics in Rio 2016. The second goal is to place top 8 in the finals. The third goal is a brand new PR. Christina Epps Kyle: Being such a high caliber athlete, do you still get nervous before big meets like this? Or are you cool calm and ready to rock? Ms. Epps: No I definitely get nervous, but as I've gotten older and have matured I have learned to channel them. I use them to fuel me rather than hold me back. It's all in the mindset. Kyle: How was your mind set after that monster PR jump you threw down? Ms. Epps: I definitely was able to relax after my first jump. Any nerves that were there had totally disappeared. I was immediately more confident but due to some severe cramping I was having that day I wasn't able to maximize on that confidence after my first jump. Kyle: Are you confident you can make it to the next level since you believe you have more in the tank even after that PR? Ms. Epps: Yea I wasn't so sure before but I definitely am now. I don't think I've scratched the surface of what I can really do. I am excited for the next level, not only just to go and compete but to learn. Tim Van Liew Kyle: Did you find the transition from college training to personal training difficult? Mr. Van Liew: The transition from college to post-collegiate training was a bit different. Although I did not have any other javelin throwers on my team to train with in college, I liked the team environment at practices and meets. We had a small team, so we were all friends and pushed each other. As an individual athlete, my coach and I try to create the best environment possible at practices now. I can honestly say that I do like it more with it just being me, but now instead of classes, I am scheduling training, diet and meets around work. I don't think the difficulty is any different, but it is definitely a different mode of operation. Kyle: How did you keep pushing yourself and stay focused to compete during the non-ideal wind conditions you were throwing in? Mr. Van Liew: My goal going into USA's was to stay in the same routine and rhythm like any other meet. My motivation is always to do what I do best and what makes me a good javelin thrower, and the results will show. Unfortunately, that's not what happened. My focus anytime I throw is to hit a clean throw through the point. In headwind conditions, this is the most important aspect of the throw. Any deviation off the attack angle can severely change the throw. I believe that I did what I needed to, but I just feel a bit short. Kyle: Whats the next move to make sure the third time is the charm and you don't have a third time 9th place finish? Mr. Van Liew: My "next move", after completing my upcoming competitions for 2015, are to continue my path towards the Olympic Team. My technique goals continue to get smaller as I learn more and become a more technical thrower. My athletic goals are more refined as I find out what it takes to be an elite level thrower. The goal is to become stronger, more precise, and to always keep my competitive edge. I doubt I will ever be 9th again. Jessie Gaines Jessie was unable to answer, as she recently left for Europe to compete. |
This Week's Team Event
TEAM LONG RUN (you define the word long)
Sunday - 9:00am
| Twenty-three people came to the Sunday team run last weekend | | Come out to eat with us afterward! | | It will be the best diner experience of your life! |
Fitzgerald 2nd, Sets CR at Belmar As the summer racing season winds down, Corinne Fitzgerald popped a huge race at the Belmar Five Miler. Coming across the line at 29:41, she broke the club 5 mile road record this weekend, finishing 2nd overall. She broke Maria Danna's record of 30:11 from last year's Sunset Classic. In fact, so did Greta Sieve, as her 30:05 is the aGSTC #2 all-time performance at this distance. She was third overall and won her age group.
Steve Mennitt also finished second overall, getting out-kicked for the win in the final 400m. His 25:31 stands as the aGSTC #2 all-time. Masters star Nick Van Langen won his 45-49 age group, not an easy task in such a large race, with an excellent 29:35. Teammate Pat Ford also won his 55-59 age group with an impressive 29:51! | Parisen and Castro afterward |
Also running was Jimbo Rivers (29:50), Eddie Calvante (30:19), Adam Nalven (30:21), Steve Warren (31:30), Mark Parisen (34:13), Katie Castro (34:33), Chris Whitehead (35:11), Kelly Thow (37:07), and Lucinda Warren (40:22).
Results here! Adrienne Viola, one of the club's best runners you probably haven't heard of yet, won the Summer Series in Donaldson Park with a respectable in 20:57. The current medical student at Robert Wood Johnson was injured much of the spring, and now has thankfully found some good health and good training.
Winning the race was Steve Mennitt, who blasted the course in 16:35, while teammate/housemate/best friend forever Mike Anis was a distant second in 17:22. Tim Morgan was 4th in 17:56.
Rathbun Runs Boilermaker 15k Steve Rathbun , part of the growing contigent of GSTC'ers in Woodbridge, traveled up to Utica, NY for the Boilermaker 15k this past weekend. He ran 51:06, good for 49th place in one of the most competitive 15k's in America. His time ranks him 8th in the club's all-time list.
Mennitt Wins Pizza Race Days before the Belmar 5 Miler, race-happy Steve Mennitt won the Woodbridge Pizza 4 Miler in 21:40. Wismith Francois, a Woodbridge man himself, was third in 22:57.
Team Competes in 10k On July 4th, a GSTC trio of ladies teamed up to be a team in the Revolutionary Run 10k down at Washington's Crossing. Karen Auteri was the group's top finisher with a 40:52 effort, or 6:34/mile pace. Germany graduate student Carolyn Kohn ran 7:20 pace for a 45:35 time, and Rachel Wiegers ran 69:14, or 10:21 pace, to round out the scoring.
Public Service Announcement We don't include mud runs, spartan runs, color runs, light runs, dark runs, paint runs, or really anything that has an adjective before the word "Run." If it doesn't have a clock at the finish line, and if it people are contracting weird viruses from the mud pools, we don't deem these races. We actually aren't sure what they are. Maybe companies with great marketing plans and great profit margins? A Message from the President The fall is a long racing season. Please: follow the team training plan that Mike and Ken have carefully created for us. Racing is fun in the summer, but please don't over do it. We want to see everyone have a great fall racing season, so keep the intensity on hold for now!

Peter Bolgert is an esteemed member of the club who was on the DMR that won the club national title in 2013 for the aGSTC. A former Marquette standout in the steeplechase, he is now halfway through a PhD program in the plasma physics department at Princeton University. In hopes to raise the intellectual rigor to the club's weekly email, he designs weekly puzzlers to sharpen the wit, acumen, and intellect of the club...while wearing this onesey.

Three track clubs - Garden State, Central Park, and Shore AC - competed in a track meet. Each club entered one man, and one man only, in each event. Ken, one of Garden State's coaches, sat in the bleachers to cheer for Mike, the team's race-walk champion. When Ken returned home later in the day, Cheyenne asked him how the club had done. "We won the race-walk all right," he said, "but Central Park won the track meet. They had a final score of 22. We finished with 9. So did Shore AC." "How were the events scored?" asked Cheyenne. "I don't remember exactly," Ken replied, "but there was a certain number of points for the winner of each event, a smaller number for second place, and a still smaller number for third place." "How many events were there altogether?" "Gosh, I don't know, Cheyenne. All I watched was the race-walk!" "Was there a high jump?" asked Josh. Ken nodded. "Who won it?" Ken didn't know. Incredible as it may seem, this last question can be answered with only the information given. Which club won the high jump? (see below the Anis Angle for the answer)
Anis Angle Mike Anis is an aging, cranky, albeit beloved and long-standing, member of the club who takes great pride in his beard. And onesey. "I did the GD race walk for this GD team years ago, and never again man, never again. And who cares about the GD high jump, as well." Quick Solution: Central Park aGSTC Runs The spring racing season is over, so most flks will be taking 1-2 weeks off from running. By July 1, check your regional enclave FB pages for summer runs starting up! Pictures of the Week You tell us what's going on what this tomato.
Billy Doran didn't have Facebook...until he joined the club, and then he posted this picture. He just started an account just to be a part of the antiquated social media site because....well....it's such a great tool to operate the club. Perhaps Friendster offers better options.
This was the picture member Kristina Petillo posted on Facebook after our team's Sunday run. Yes, indeed, summer running ain't easy!
