Enclave Brouhaha

UPDATE

This week, extra points for doing the following:

MAKING FUNNY FACES IN THE SELFIE.

You are no longer uniformed.

SCOREBOARD

#gold division

1.  CENTRAL ENCLAVE (112 points)
13 (Week 1) + 32 (Week 2) + 48 (Week 3) + 19 (Week 4)
The Central Enclave, captained by Kyle Price, continues to be the dominating enclave this summer.  Many would argue they are also the most attractive, most successful, and most financially thriving as well.  Don't agree?  Prove them wrong.
Hello Meg and Rachel!!!  Thanks for posting!!!

We think this is from a group run.  However, truth be told, we're not sure what is happening here.  Or, what happened.

Eli with an incredible mustache.  Far left.  Should be triple points.

#dude enclave

2.  PRINCETON ENCLAVE (83 points)
9 (Week 1) + 21 (Week 2) + 45 (Week 3) + 8
A solid week of selfless for the defending Brouhaha Champions.  However, they're gonna need a lot more than cross training and Matt Baker vacation selfies to take the lead from the almighty Central Enclave.
The ladies and....Ashwin.  Next week, bonus points for the PE when he actually runs with guys?

The Princeton Enclave is quite the good looking crew.

3.  NORTH ENCLAVE (76 points)
10 (Week 1) + 15 (Week 2) + 35 (Week 3) + 16 (Week 4)
The North is storming back, as they come within just seven points of the Princeton Enclave.  Had Joe and Francis posted pictures of their two runs, they would just be three points shy!  This should be an interesting contest in the final summer weeks.
Masters = BIG POINTS
Alyssa...Da North's newest member!

Nothing but love for the 6am workout.
Katie, Courtney, and Alyssa bring the North dangerously close to second place!

4.  WILD WEST ENCLAVE (36 points)
10 (Week 1) + 0 (Week 2) + 13 (Week 3) + 13 (Week 4)
Some very questionable points this week from the west.  First, Will takes a picture of himself, claiming Ellen to be that far speck on the horizon, which to be honest, could be another planet for all we can tell.  Okay, fine.  And then the dinner picture is used for points, which *technically* isn't a run.
Questionable selfie.  Allegedly Ellen is somewhere in the background?

2 masters x 2 points each = 4 POINT PICTURE!

It isn't a run, but it's a fine effort.  Perhaps someone around the table told Schneider that a long run isn't two small runs in one day.

#black division

1.  MORRISTOWN ENCLAVE (41 points)
4 (Week 1) + 4 (Week 2) + 18 (Week 3) + 15 (Week 4)
Enclave Captain Heather McDermott continues to put the pressure on the rest of the Black Division.  Meeting at the Morristown Running Company, this is proving to be an unstoppable crew....and this week, lots of masters runners!  They certainly have no time to relax, as the JC Enclave made a huge push this week.
We said extra points for masters, not muffins!

More masters than a Tuesday night game of bingo!
#tenpoints

1.  JERSEY CITY ENCLAVE (41 POINTS)
3 (Week 1) + 5 (Week 2) + 8 (Week 3) + 25 (Week 4)
Wow!  A huge week for the Jersey City Enclave, as they tie it up with Morristown.  Although their runs aren't big, they are frequent with perhaps the best backdrops in the contest!  The NYC skyline and accompanying rivers are a heck of a lot better than parking lots of the North Enclave, that's for damned sure.

3.  SOUTH ENCLAVE (15 PTS)
2 (Week 1) + 0 (Week 2) + 14 (Week 3) + 0 (Week 4)
Angry Anis.

Happy Anis.

The South got some generous help this week.

Points for creativity...well played, good sir, well played.

4.  FLORHAM PARK ENCLAVE (16 PTS) SOUTH ENCLAVE (15 points)
3 (Week 1) + 2 (Week 2) + 10 (Week 3) + 0 (Week 4)
Florham Park slides from 3rd to 4th this week, a disappointing event for sure.  Enclave captain Joe Jacobs has the horses in the stable.  Will he get them out?  And take pictures of them?  Only time will tell, as #thesouth replaces them on the third and final podium spot.

5.  BEACH ENCLAVE (4 points)
2 (Week 1) + 2 (Week 2) + 0 (Week 3) + 0 (Week 4)
Ouch.

GREAT Pictures, but...

Someone please. Help.

NO POINTS
One of our masters runners posted this picture.  We don't know where Matt Baker is recruiting these guys from, but...

NO POINTS

Wait a second!  Trump isn't in an enclave.

NO POINTS

RULES
1.  Advertise the run on Enclave page beforehand
2.  Take picture of runners
3.  Post on FB page

Enclaves get 2-5 points for every run; two is the minimum of runners, and five is the maximum number of points.

Winning enclaves in each division will win adidas gear by season's end.

Points will be totaled up every week in the weekly email.

Club Nationals 2015:
San Francisco!!!!

The Leadership Team met on Tuesday, July 7th, and agreed on the following items:

1.  If an athlete hits the 82% PLP standard, they will receive a $300 stipend toward their flight.

2.  Any athlete hitting the 82% PLP standard (for 5k this is 15:40 men; 17:57 women), the club will pay for lodging, entry fee,  and van transportation there.

3.  To qualify for this support, the athlete must run two of the six team races this fall.

4.  Exceptions will be made, by the LT,  on a case-by-case basis if two team races aren't met

5.  Any athlete on the "A" or "B" team will receive lodging, van transportation, and meet entry support if they also meet the "two team race" standard

6.  Anyone who "belongs in the race" (sub-20 women; sub-17 men) may go and run on an aGSTC team!  The more the merrier!  Last year we broke the USATF record with eleven scoring teams!!!

7.  Any questions should be directed to the gardenstatetrackclub@gmail.com email, whereas it will be redirected to the LT for consideration.

This is your governing body.  They work hard.

Kyle's Corner

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

On this week's KK we had a chat with Sara Diaz-Mayo. Sara is one of our Steady Striders, but don't be quick to categorize her. She was a force to be reckoned with in high school and is now finding her way back to regular running after a brief solo stint and graduation from our Couch to 5K group. But she's more into the enjoyment of it then the competitive side. And with all of the cross training activities she also enjoys we can see why.

Sara Diaz-Mayo
Kyle: Hello Sara thank you for joining us!
Ms. Mayo: Thank you for having me.
Kyle: When and how did you find out about GSTC?
Ms. Mayo: Some time last year I decided that I wanted to back to one of my passions. I was running solo and noticed that a lot of times people ran with teams. I saw the jersey for garden state track club and I liked that you guys had the couch to 3 miles group so I joined!
Kyle: How has your experience training with that group been?
Ms. Mayo: It's okay I guess. Sometimes is hard because we have such different paces and schedules!
Kyle: Have you been able to improve your running?
Ms. Mayo: Oh def! I started at a 10 minute mile last year and I've been able to consistently run at 8:30 with the fastest so far of 7:55!!!!!
Kyle: That's great! Have you been improving on your race times as well?
Ms. Mayo: Unfortunately I haven been able to race but looking forward to this fall! My times improved significantly during Spartan races!
Kyle: What goals are you looking for this fall?
Ms. Mayo: I'm looking for a 23:30 for 3 miles flat run. 6 hours on Lake Tahoe world championships in CA for the 12+ mile beast.
Kyle: Did you run in high school?
Ms. Mayo: Oh yeah, good memories! I was ok I guess but there are some highlights from those long days... I used to train with the boys I was undefeated 3 mile city champion cross country 3 years in a row, I won USTF state and tri-state cross country and qualified for USTF nationals. I did a pretty decent job on the public division 1, always placing top 3 although division 1 is typically not very competitive. My PR on the 3 miles was 18:00 and some change and 800 meter was 2:16 those were the days before I got all burned out...
Kyle: That's a very impressive record! Any ambitions on getting back to that level?
Ms. Mayo: Sometimes I get "that feeling of" knowing that if I really wanted to I could beat all my PRs since I'm more knowledgeable of my body mechanics but then I get afraid of getting "burned out" and not running. I used to have panic attacks at the starting line but no one would notice... Lol my stomach just twisted so bad and the pressure of being told that you are predicted to win and have to meet the expectations. Now a days I run out of love. Running was always my antidepressant! Idk maybe I will maybe I won't but is much more important for me to love it than to win.

Kyle: Certainly a great outlook on running that one is. I personally wouldn't be doing it if it weren't so much fun.
So what do you do for fun to spice up the running?
Ms. Mayo: I pole lol. I think the variety I put into my workout makes it easier for me to run. Lots of drills too.
Kyle: I have a friend that instructs a pole class, I hear it's a very good workout.
Ms. Mayo: Excellent upper body and core workout. Never been stronger than now. Thanks to pole...
Kyle: A unique form of cross training! I like it. I'm sure it helps with those Spartan races you like too.
Ms. Mayo: Oh yeah between Spartan races, pole dance classes and running I feel like I am well rounded. And that's my other love Spartan races! Lol aroo! I also do mini workout or health videos on IG. Maybe I can make something interesting out of that!
Kyle: Awesome! Sounds like you're a busy lady!
Ms. Mayo: I try to keep myself busy.
Kyle: Well I won't hold you! That's all the time we have for this week. Thank you for speaking with us!
Ms. Mayo: Haha. You're welcome.
Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Weekly Results

LeBourne Wins World Title

Lyon, France:  Most 56 year olds enjoy weekends by reading the paper, doing some weeding, hitting the gym, and maybe going out to a nice dinner.

Not this guy.

Anselm LeBourne, the aGSTC masters phenom, won all three 800m rounds in France this past weekend,  leading to a world championship in the 55-59 division for 800m.

On Thursday, he won his preliminary race, heat #1, in 2:17.35.  This qualified him for Friday's semi-final, whereas he won heat #2 in 2:11.25.

After a rest day on Saturday, LeBourne and eleven other athletes lined up for the final.   From the gun, France's Benoit Zavattero took the lead, pulling the race through the first lap in 60 seconds.  LeBourne, who has run 2:02 this year, sat patiently in second, going through around 61.5 for his opening circuit.

At the end of the backstretch on the second lap, with about 230m to go, LeBourne and fellow countryman Ray Knerr moved past the struggling Frenchman, taking over the 1-2 positions.  Both Americans looked strong in the final stretch, with Knerr even moving close to LeBourne's shoulder with 30-40m to go, but the Maplewood, NJ resident held on for the victory.  His 2:04.79 edged out the other podium finishers 2:05.29 and 2:05.99- both of whom are one year younger than him.
Along with the USA and France, finalists in this race were from Great Britain, Russian, Spain, Netherlands, and Italy.

See all masters world championship results here.

Douma, Notarianni 2-3 in AP
Asbury Park- Alyssa Douma and Cara Notarianni finished second and third,
respectively, at the Asbury Park 5k this weekend.  Douma ran 18:36, just five seconds behind the winner, averaging exactly 6:00/mile.  Notarianni, a recent graduate of the University of Scranton, just dipped under 19:00 with an 18:58 performance.

Other club members running were Wismith Francois (17:47), Adam Nalven (18:27), and pole-vaulter-turned-runner Elvis Cole (18:32).

Four Run the Dover 5k

Dover- Four aGSTC'ers competed in the Dover Renaissance 5k on Saturday.  Matt Storms was the club's top finisher, placing 7th in 19:20- good for third in his age group.  Eric Davis was just behind him, clocking 19:46 to finish 9th overall and also third in his age group.  From there, lovebirds Aya and Karl Leitz finished 18th and 19th, respectively, with 21:15 and 21:29 times.

TRIATHLON RESULTS

Fitzgerald 2nd AG

Milwaukee, WI: Corinne Fitzgerald had the highest finish amongst aGSTC'ers at the USA Triathlon National Age Group Championships this weekend out in Wisconsin.  In the Olympic Distance event (1500m swim, 40m bike, 10k run), she finished 7th in her age group, and 91st overall out of 1,183 total finishers.   Her final time was 2:20:07.

The next day, she came back in the sprint race (750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run) 26th overall, and 2nd in her age group.  After swimming 14:08 and biking a 34:33, she rolled to an 18:45 5k to push her up to second.

In the 45-49 female Olympic division, Cherylann Dorsey finished 79th out of 151 finishers.  After the swimming and biking portions, the Florham Park resident impressively ran a 47:29 10k to finish the race, crossing the finish line in 2:42:03.

In the 16-19 male Olympic division, Bobby Hammond finished a very impressive 6th place.  Second place out of the water with an incredible 18:07 swim, he then hammered the bike portion (1:00:05) and ran a 39:41 10k in the final third of the race to finish in 2:01:01.

See all results here.

Roberts 3rd Overall

Atlantic City:  Leah Roberts finished third overall in the Atlantic City Triathlon, crossing the finish line in 1:57:02.  In second place after the swim, eventual winner Jordan Hedding passed her and took the lead on the bike, pushing Roberts to third.  She eventually passed Erin Merritt to retake second on the bike, but later surrendered the silver medal with two miles to go on the five mile run.  The top three received a pair of Selming shoes, a medal, and a bottle of wine.

Redden 2nd AG in Ecuador
Manta, Ecuador: Jessica "PK" Redden finished second in her age group at the Half Ironman in her home country this weekend.  After finishing the 2k swim in third place, she moved up to second on the bike, and later ran a tough 1:37:59 half marathon to finish her race.  She was the 9th overall woman.

Peter's Pfact
Peter Bolgert is an esteemed member of the club who was on the DMR that won the club national title in 2013 for the aGSTC.  A former Marquette standout in the steeplechase, he is now halfway through a PhD program in the plasma physics department at Princeton University.  In hopes to raise the intellectual rigor to the club's weekly email, he designs weekly puzzlers to sharpen the wit, acumen, and intellect of the club...while wearing this onesey.

In last week's email, Chuck shared a picture of a plaque in Healdburg, CA, commemorating that town's former high jump world record holder.

I kid you not, Sheboygan, Wisconsin (my hometown), has almost the exact same thing!  Pat Matzdorf, a native of that lovely city, broke the high jump world record in 1971, jumping 7' 6.25" (2.29m) at the US-USSR meet in Berkeley, California.  He used a bent-leg straddle style (see pic).  A 20-year-old Steve Prefontaine set an America 5000-meter record of 13:30.4 at the same meet.

To celebrate Matzdorf's feat, someone erected a 7' 6.25" metal pole in Sheboygan's Fountain Park.  I believe there is a small plaque as well.  Strangely, I can find absolutely no mention of the "Matzdorf pole" online, but I managed to find it on Google Maps Street View! (see pic, the pole is in the foreground)

For more information, read this strange Sports Illustrated article from 1972:

Some highlights:
1) "He is the ideal size for a high jumper at 6'3", 175, and his legs are so long he has trouble finding pants that fit in Sheboygan."
2) The author mentions that Matzdorf's mother Gertrude speaks a dialect called "Sheboygan English."

Stay tuned for the next Peter's Phact!

Anis Angle

Mike Anis is an aging cranky, albeit beloved and long-standing member of the club who takes great pride in his beard and his onesey.  In full transparency, we should probably also add he's never been asked to write an angle.  We just do it for him.

"I'm pretty sure that's not how you spell phact.  If I owned a thesaurus, I would tell you for sure."
