5k Team Championships: Women Go 1-2-4

Ogletree, Sieve Go 1-2 as Ladies Dominate

After Greta Sieve lead for 3.0 miles, hammering along at 5:36 pace, Cheyenne Ogletree came on her shoulder in the final stretch.  The two then dueled, stride for stride, fighting for the win, the USATF-NJ 5k title, and the $300 prize money.  The thirty second battle brought a loud roar from the lined spectators, as it wasn't until the very last stride where Ogletree took the lead for the first and only time, outleaning Sieve for a one-second win, 17:24-17:25.  Sieve's first words, when finally catching her breath, epitomized the day for the GSTC ladies.

"It's okay….she is my teammate."

The aGSTC ladies had an impressive team day at the races yesterday, putting 10 in the top 16, resulting in a 1-2-4 team finish.  While the Herculean efforts of Sieve and Ogletree helped the cause profoundly, it was the collective efforts of three full teams that made it quite the memorable morning.

Robyn Evangelist was the third GSTC finisher, hitting the tape as the #4 finisher in 18:35.  A few steps behind her was Karen Auteri, who ran a five-second PR with a 18:53 finish for 6th overall, while Erika Meling (7th, 18:55) and Brittany McCann (8th, 18:57), wearing the ominous bib number of 666, finished just behind her.  Angela Dunn (10th, 19:04), the leaf women's captain for the 5k, slipped into the top ten by outrunning Kristin Andrews, the sister of famed miler Robby Andrews.

Averaging 18:53, he first place team comprised of Sieve, Evangelist, Auteri, Dunn, Noral Norvell (21st, 20:22), Bri Teichmann (26:24), and Erin Varga (26:35).  Varga, the meet director for the Jimmy D 5k, made her GSTC debut, coming off a six-month injury.

The second place team, with a team average of 19:39 for its top five runners, included Ogletree, McCann, Chelsea Callan (16th, 19:46), Sandi Kaspszyk (26th, 20:37), Nicole Salge (39th, 21:29), Diana Stavrou (26:27), Stephanie Edwards (26:50), and Angie Gentile (27:03).  Stavrou and Gentile both made their club debuts, while the 48-year-old Kaspszyk continued her solid spring season.

Meling led the fourth place team, teaming up with Pontecorvo (12th, 19:16), Michelle Brangan (13th, 19:18), Erin Blum (21:24), Christina Chafos (21:24), Vanessa Chafos (26:16), Prudence Jones (34:10), and Angie Latif (35:21).  The top five averaged 20:04, just shy of the 19:48 team that finished in third, just one place ahead.

In the men's race, Atilla Sabahoglu and Josh Neyhart finished 3rd and 4th overall, running 15:34 and 15:54, respectively, while teammate Dan Teichmann ran 17:40.

Thursday Night:  Ibrahim's CR Leads GSTC at Icahn

NYC- Yakabu Ibrahim crushed the aGSTC club record in the 100 high hurdles Thursday night, winning in a sizzling 14.22.  He leaned so hard for the win over Zenith Velocity's Carrington Queen, he ended up falling and rolling forward to best Queen's 14.23.

Shene Davis won the triple jump in 41-3, just 3cm away from her lifetime best, while Ieshawn Johnson won the discus in 47.53m.  After Ish Robbins and Chris Turner made the 100m final, they teamed up with Josh Chavanne and Mark Givens to win the 4x400 relay, defeating three Central Park TC relay teams in the process.

Friday Night: Mid-D at PA Distance Festival

West Chester, PA- Larry Ramirez debuted in the black and gold quite well, rolling to the second fastest 800m time ever recorded by a GSTC'er.  While a second off his PR, his 1:52.82 was good for second in his heat at the 9th Annual John Hay Distance Carnival.  About a dozen other mid-distance athletes competed in the event that draws a nice elite field for the 800m, 1500m, and 5k.

Jared Hanko won the 400m in 49.83, while 800m PRs came from Jarrett Kunze (1:57.61), Chris Warren (1:57.83), Lauren Hayes (2:28.69), and Erin LaCosta (2:28.80).  Robyn Evangelist ran a season best in the elite 1500m (4:40.69), while Matt Eder grabbed 3rd in the open mile (4:26.41).

Weitz PRs in Hoboken

Hoboken- New member Brian Weitz ran a lifetime best of 18:57 this weekend at the Hoboken Catholic Academy 5k, finishing 7th overall.

Mooney 2nd AG

Somewhere in Deep South Jersey With the Pineys Marrying Their Cousins- Lee Mooney continues to have a fine spring, as he ran the BR5k in Woodbury at 21:07, a season best for him.

Monclair YMCA 10k: McDermott Wins

Monclair- Heather McDermott won the 10k on Sunday, crossing the line in 43:16—winning by well over a minute.  Other teammates in the race included Henley Hage (38:40), Dan Beideman (41:07), Cindy Smalletz (45:18), Peter Auteri (45:39), Francis Beideman (47:07), and Douglas McAndrew (69:20).

Quotes of the Week

"I ran so fast you didn't even see me finish the first time!"  -Michelle Brangan, via text, in response to her name showing up in results twice

"It's hammertime!"  -Alina Duran, via FB.  No, she doesn't mean MC Hammer!

"Jumped out of a plane today."  -Ryan DeGregorio, via FB.

"Running is often the best medicine.  I felt like crap for most of the day, and it was a beautiful day, didn't make a lot of sense.  Finally got to running, and I ran a hard workout, endorphins fixed everything.  And all was right in the world of my head."  -Mike Anis, via FB

Gold Star

By Ashwin Anantharaman

Marcus Casimir

Marcus joined GSTC after he made a bet that he could beat someone in a 100m sprint race. He realized he needed practice so he found GSTC and decided that we were the best club for him. His goal is to run sub 11 in the 100m and to continue to improve every race. He has no pre race or run routines as he is still trying to figure out the sport. He believes once he figures it out it will involve a mixture of complex carbs, protein and electrolytes. Outside of running he is into Crossfit, HPDE, and AutoCross.

TMA: Totally Misunderstood Award

A pretty decent week for TMA nominations!

The first two go to Ricky Garcia and Chris Warren from the Friday PA Distance Festival.  First, Garcia leaves for the meet, one in which he had hopes to challenge the 800m club record, but…he forgot his spikes at home.  Warren had a dandy, as he mixed up the times for the elite 800m and elite 1500m.  He arrived to the track after warming up just as his 1500m heat was finishing, womp womp.  Luckily we got him into the 800m race and he labored for a sweet two-second PR.  It was pretty funny to see his face upon realization that he mixed up the start times for the two events.

Finally, Raritan Valley Road Runners (RVRR) gets a TMA for their "Training Run" this Saturday during the College Ave Mile.  Why they would schedule a large team event the same day as an all-division championship race…we have no idea.
