| THE WEEKLY EMAIL | | | FALL SEASON IS HERE. AND SO IS THE aGSTC TRAINING PLAN. We are excited to announce that the 2014 aGSTC Fall Training Plan will begin Monday, June 30th. Ken Goglas and Mike Fonder have been thoughtfully collaborating on this for weeks, and it will be rolled out, in its entirety, next Monday. The plan will be the same for the men and the women for the first few microcycles, as it will eventually begin to differ as the men prepare for 10k cross country and the women for 6k. Between now and then, continue to enjoy your break between the spring and fall seasons. Active rest is what is now prescribed: ride a bike, swim in a pool, play some volleyball, or do whatever sounds fun and relaxing. No reason to strap on your running shoes for a little while longer. Enjoy the physical and mental break from it all! | | | The starting line of the 2014 President's Cup in Millburn | | Johnson and Danna hold the coveted President's Cup after the race |
aGSTC Drinks From the Cup, Again Johnson Wins, Leads Fastest Team Effort in Club History Millburn- One week after sweeping the top eight team spots at the College Ave Mile, the adidas Garden State Track Club had one final stop along the spring racing circuit: the President's Cup, the USATF-NJ 5k Championships. And, for a second week in a row, the Chris Johnson Express rolled into town, crushing the competition en route to leading his club to a 1-2-3-4-8-9-10 team finish--the best team performance in event history. Johnson's 14:50.83 heroics, however, fell just .07 short of the club 5k road record, as Jeff Perrella won this race in 2011 in 14:50.76. Since 2000, only twenty-one scoring teams of five runners have broken 80:00, averaging 16:00 or faster per man. Four of those teams happened Monday, as the aGSTC teams averaged 15:52, 15:55, 15:56, and 15:57 as 17 of the top 24 finishers were Gold. The #1 and #3 all-time 5k runners for the club, Chris Warren and Eric DuBois, who respectively ran 14:32 and 14:38 this year at Penn Relays, did not compete. Johnson's win was the fourth year in a row that GSTC'er drank from the President's Cup, as Perrella did it in 2011 (14:50) and 2012 (15:02), and Ken Goglas earned the honor in 2013 (15:08). | Johnson in 2014 |
Will Griffin was the team's second finisher in 15:11, as four other teammates broke the top ten: Goglas (15:26), Chris Croff (15:31), Kyle Price (15:33), and Mike Fonder (15:34). The 8th, 9th, and 10th place teams had averages of 17:01, 17:31, and 17:56, respectively. In comparison, 10th place team in 2012, the Do Run Runners, averaged 18:20. Other runners in the top 25 included Atilla Sabahiglu (12/15:41), Anthony Harris (13/15:44), Rob Nihen (14/15:52), Jarrett Kunze (15/15:57), Peter Bolgert (16/16:04), Mike Anis (17/16:07), Matt Eder (18/16:08), John Welsh (19/16:08), Ted | Goglas in 2013 | Doyle (22/16:17), Chris Schneider (23/16:18), Adam Gruchacz (24/16:19). From this group, it was the first time for Kunze under 16, Anis ran with an upper-respitory infection, and Eder PR'ed on the road. The aGSTC's top 40 finishers had a 16:58.09 average, while the top 20 GSTC men averaged 15:55.42. The top five gold finishers averaged 15:18.89--or 76:34 for a total team time--which was the third fastest five-man finish in race history. The Morristown resident, who only ran one semester in college, ran her 2nd fastest 5k of her career.
Her time ranks her #3 on the aGSTC All-Time List, ten seconds behind Cheyenne Ogletree (17:24) and Greta Sieve (17:25). The two were stride-for stride at the Stomp 5k earlier in June.
Rozemberg Leads 40s Team in Debut Glen Ridge- In his club debut, Hernan Rozemberg hit the tape at 17:19, helping lead the aGSTC men's master's 40s team to an 8th place finish at the Lager Run, the USATF-NJ 5k Championships. Nineteen total 40s teams were there, while Matt Baker (18:56), Brian Harris (20:01), Don Weise (20:51), and Peter Auteri (21:22) teamed up with Rozemberg for the 40s team result.
The 50s group of Baker, Harris, Auteri, Julius Pontesorvo (21:28), and Francis Beideman (21:59) finished with an average time of 20:32, also good enough for 8th.
In non-masters news, Atilla Sabahoglu won the race in 15:49. Henley Hage ran 17:55, Jay The Businessman ran 17:55, and Karen Auteri ran 19:02.
