aGSTC Brings 110 Volunteers to adidas Grand Prix

NYC- The three-year contract with adidas asks the club to bring thirty volunteers, but instead…they brought 110.

Had you been at the adidas Grand Prix Diamond League meet Saturday afternoon, you would have seen a lot of familiar faces.  Club members were everywhere, helping fetch shot puts, assisting the NBC news crew, selling programs in the stands, drug testing athletes, checking in adidas VIPs, selling tickets….you name it, the GSTC was doing it for the second best track and field meet in North America.  Dozens of the world's best professional athletes were competing, and the club was there to

The meet’s highlight, for many, was the high jump.  This was the first track meet in the history of the sport where two athletes cleared 2.42m, or 7’-11”.  After that, Bohdan Bondarenko and Mutaz Essa Barshim went after the next height- 2.43m- both with hopes to break the world record.   And, who, you ask, was working the electronic results and scoreboard just feet away from this historic high jump duel?  Erin LaCosta and Kelsey Lewis, two GSTC high jumpers!

4x400 Action at AGP: Women Grab 2nd

NYC- The adidas GSTC women’s relay ran the second fastest time in club history yesterday, grabbing second in the Metro Women’s 4x400 with a time of 3:48.91.  This was the first year the club had a women’s 4x400 at the event.

Haisha Bisiolu got the ladies rolling with a 56.5, and Jamesha Richard moved the ladies into 2nd with a 56.0 leg.  After a 61.5 split from Robyn Evangelist, who found out just Thursday that she was running, Jenn Edobi reeled in Wave TC with a sizzling 54.1 anchor leg to bring the ladies back for the silver medal finish.

Check it out here!

4x400 Action at aGP: Men Get 3rd and CR

NYC- Less than a year after the men ran 3:13.37 to win the national club title, they lowered this club record by over a full second.  Their third place was the best finish for any GSTC men’s 4x400 at the Metro 4x400 event in the adidas Grand Prix.

Logan Sharp, the club record holder in the 400IH, got things rolling with a hot lead-off of 48.1, putting the gold into second behind Zenith Velocity and a step ahead of Central Park TC.  Isaiah Gill held onto that lead with a 47.2 split, yet Jared Hanko’s PR carry of 48.2 enabled CPTC to get just a step behind.  Jamal Roberts let Central Park take the lead, then sat on them, then blasted by them with 150m to go, splitting 47.7 to enable the Gold to finish 2nd in their heat, and third overall, with a new club record of 3:12.37.

Quotes of the Week

“That’s Haddonfield, the town the Haddrosaurus was discovered in.  I may be wrong, but I don’t recall there being a Newbrunswickasaurus.  Hashtag southforthewin.”  -Adin Mickle, via FB, defending his holy land of south jersey.

“It was amazing to see how our whole organization could work together to help make a huge event like the adidas Grand Prix a success.  This was truly a team building experience and it shows how strong our club is and how passionate we all are about what we do.  It was fun working with all of you today.”  -Angela Dunn, via FB

“We were so close to two guys jumping for the world record!”  -Erin LaCosta on the ride home after the meet

Every person was very professional, took direction very well but also showed great initiative by collaborating with each other when we needed to improvise. The show featured a great deal of field event coverage that could not have happened without such assistance. I could not have asked for a better group.”  -David Glassman, liaison between NBC and the USATF, who was in charge of live national television coverage, in an email to the GSTC regarding the volunteers provided to him.

“Thanks for allowing me and my friends to join the team this season..Looking forward to a big next year with GSTC!  Records are gonna continue to drip.”  -Jamal “Pacman” Roberts, via text after the adidas Grand Prix Saturday evening

“Can everyone please put their phones on mute?”  -adidas meet volunteer director, who asked our 110 volunteers on the conference call this question maybe a dozen times.  Maybe we’re the awesome club in NJ, but perhaps not the smartest!

“If I ever run for governor of New Jersey, I am going to run on a platform of Route 1 reform.”  -Peter Bolgert struggling to appreciate the beauty of our inter-state highway system

Gold Star

By Ashwin Anantharaman

Hernan Rozemberg

Hernan contacted GSTC because he was looking for a group with advanced-level runners to run with. He's been in Jersey City for a year and half mostly doing his own thing. Chuck put in him in touch with William "The Thrill" Appman to link up with the Jersey City enclave.

His  current goal is to run well in the Chicago Marathon this fall. He'd like to at least run a PR and ideally break 2:40. His PRs are: 2:43:38 in the marathon; 1:16:49 in the half: 34:54 in the 10K; 16:14 in the 5K. His pre-race routines include a basic warm-up with some striders and 100-meter pickups. The warm-up distance and number of striders depends on the length of the race, but he will usually do at least two easy miles. He might also do some light stretching, though he usually leaves most stretching for afterward. His hobbies include reading, going to the movies, urban exploring (preferably off the tourist path), hiking and playing other sports (like soccer and basketball).

TMA: Totally Misunderstood Award

Well, Tim Morgan pulled off to the side of the road to take the adidas Grand Prix conference call Wednesday night.  Moments later, he got a parking ticket for being on the side of the road.
