GSTC Runs Wild at 8k XC Champs
Men Extend Longest USATF Winning Streak in Country
And with that, the GSTC men have continued the longest USATF winning streak in the nation's history.  How long is it?

Five years.

That's right: the club's open men have been undefeated for all of 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, and the fall of 2011.  Yes!  Forty-nine USATF-NJ championship races, and....forty-nine team wins.  Since the club's inception, they've only lost just one time- in the Half Marathon in 2011- the club's second team race of its fledgling career.  And had Ashwin Anantharaman not gotten the "sniffles" the day before....well, who knows. Clinton was supposed to win as well.

Either way, the team racked up over one hundred points.  Let's take a look at how.  But first, gotta love the team circle chant!

Masters 40s, 50s Win Team Gold
Wes Cole gives the thumbs up at mile three

The GSTC masters men dominated the 40s and 50s field, marking the first time in club history both teams won at the same time.  On the 40s team, top gun Thom Knowles (28:10) was the first 40s guy to finish, and he was followed by the debut of Aaron Cooper (29:34), who was the #3 finisher.  Nick VanLangen (#5/30:15), Gary Leaman (#6/30:16), and John Montgomery (#8/30:33) sewed up the dominating win of 23 points.  Wesley Cole (13th/31:49) and Eric Davis (14th/31:52) were the 6-7 punch for the group.

Kenny Huryk was the 50's #5 man that clinched the win

The 50s team had an equally dominant win with thirty total points, as VanLangen, Leaman, and Montgomery were the crew's top three.  Matt Baker (32:58) and Kenny Huryk (34:46) helped clinch the win, as Karl Leitz (35:37) was the group's #6 man.

Open Men Go 1-2-3-5; Stetler Wins Title
Sean Stetler rolls into the finish line at Natirar Park

The open men packed eight dudes in the top ten, including an individual win for Sean Stetler in 25:41, as the men scored forty-four points alone with their four squads.

Evan Ward was a solid second in 25:56, with teammate and training partner Matt Eder finishing third in 26:00.  Will Appman (26:29) and Stephen X. Rathbun, VI (26:35) filled out the top five.  From there, Kevin D'Emic (27:17), Ricardo Garcia (27:28), and Edsel Flores (27:29) rounded out the top ten.

Duke indoor 800m record holder Sean Oswald made his GSTC debut, and Jon Sewnig finally got off the couch and put on a uniform.

Open Women Go 2-4-6
The GSTC ladies had a strong showing at the 8k XC Championships, as their split-squad helped them finish 2nd, 4th, and 6th place--resulting in a whopping twenty-six total points for the crew.

Aimee Chegwidden continued to be the team's top finisher, as she was 2nd overall in 30:44.  Erika Meling and Nicole Salge were the next two finishers, running 32:06 and 33:10, respectively.  Shannon McKenna (33:36) and Kate Ashley (34:52) rounded out the scoring for the 2nd place team.

Jackie Lemme (34:25) ran a solid race while Stephanie Zottoli (34:42) had a strong team debut, as the two were the 1-2 finishers for the 4th place team.  Jenn Sapienza (34:46), Aya Leitz (36:06), and Stephanie Agresti (41:52) were the other scoring finishers for the team.

Masters Women Finish 4th; Dorsey 5th Overall
Cherylann Dorsey finishes as the #1 masters women or the club

The GSTC women's 40s team finished 4th out of twelve teams, as their thirty-five points fell just shy of a podium, top-three finish.  Cherylann Dorsey was the 5th masters finisher in 35:26, followed by Sandi Kaspszyk (7th/ 36:04) and Erin Varga (23rd/ 41:23).  Prudence Jones rounded our the group with a 53:52 performance.

Club Places Well in
NYC Marathon
The GSTC women finished 14th out of 99 teams in the NYC Marathon team results.  Sarah Schillaci (3:17:26) was the team's top finisher, as masters runner Sheera Siegel (3:21:37) and almost-masters Aya Leitz (3:21:44) rounded out the team finishers.

The men's 50s team also finished well, as Yuki Negoro (3:19:48) helped the team place 17th out of seventy-eight teams.  Yoshitomo Mori (3:33:55) and Karl Leitz (3:51:10) were the group's other scoring members.  This trio also finished 42nd in the 40s category.

Mike Fonder, above left, ran 2:43:43 for 164th overall with a 6:15 average.  He was running alongside Eritrea's Ghirmay Ghebreslassie for a few early miles, than decided to just slow down and enjoy the scenery.

A final shout out goes to Rachel Wiegers, who not only finished in 4:49:30, but is the first GSTC'er to rock a Road Relays shirt at the NYC Marathon!

Men, Women 2nd at
USATF East Region XC Champs
The GSTC ladies finished an impressive 2nd at the USATF East Region 5k Cross Country Championships at the challenging Belmont Plateau.  The top five scoring members were Kelsey Rose (4th), Aimee Chegwidden (6th), Chelsea Callan (7th), Nicole Salge (20:48), and Kristin Prazenica (12th).  Kate Ashley (14th), Heather Ingraham (17th), and Erin LaCosta (19th) rounded out the team's finishers!

We are unsure why they're holding Kyle Price like this, but the men also finished 2nd at the USATF East Region XC Championships in Philadelphia last weekend.

Price was the team's top man, finishing 5th overall in 26:54.  The scoring top five was Evan Ward (7th, in center, holding Kyle by the buttocks?), Matt Lutcza (8th), Matt Eder (11th), and Edsel Flores (16th).

Masters 40s, 50s Grab Silver Medal
 at Giralda 10k

In the penultimate team race of the year, the men's 40s and 50s team both finished second at the USATF-NJ 10k Championships this past weekend, continuing a very impressive season.

Thom Knowles ran his best race of 2016, finishing as the #2 masters in the race with a strong effort of 35:16.  Former Princeton teammate Chris Sallade was next in 36:08, and Gary Leaman was #4 in 36:46.  Nick VanLangen (38:02) and Wesley Cole (39:02) rounded out the scoring five for the 40s team.

Leaman and VanLangen went 1-2 for the 50s crew, as Yuki Negoro, fresh off the NYC Marathon, was the three-man in 42:29.  Brian Harris (43:58) and Karl Leitz (45:36) were the final scoring finishers.

The 60s team finished 11th place, just fourteen seconds away from a 10th place scoring finish.  Peter Auteri (47:09), Fran Beideman (52:11), and John Bergacs (62:24) were the team's three athletes.

Petillo Races, and Races, and Races...
One of the more prolific racers this fall has been Kristina Petillo.  Since the last team email, she's run the Scare Hunger 5k (first female in 23:37!), Lumiere's Challenge (Wine and Dine HM in 1:59:46; Wine and Dine 10k in 51:16), and the Anthem Richmond Marathon in 4:18:20.

Peter Auteri was 2nd in his age group in the Disney Half with a 1:48:39 effort.

McKenna 3rd in Nashville

In Tennessee for a wedding, Shannon McKenna used her trip as a great reason to run another half marathon this year.  The Parlin resident finished third overall with a time of 1:34:09, or 7:12 pace!

NYC Abbot Dash: Three Sub-16

Three GSTC'ers ran the Abbott Dash the day before the NYC Marathon.  Josh Neyhart (15:20), Will Appman (15:36), and Kevin D'Emic (15:45) all met the 82% PLP standard for a travel stipend, yet new rules now say they must run this PLP time in the confines of NJ.

Visicaro 3rd at Rocky 10 Miler
Tom Visicaro finished 3rd in the Rocky Balboa Ten Miler, finishing in 60:13 for a solid 6:01/mile finish.  When asked about the race, he said, "Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward."

Teichmann, Gottschall Breaks
4:00 at MC Marathon

Both Bri Teichmann and Jennifer Gotschall broke 4:00 in the Marine Corps Marathon--which was no easy task as the temperatures soared over 80 degrees by race end--resulting in personal bests for both of them.

Gotschall was on-pace for a 3:45 until mile 21, but the course began really heating up--so she happily settled for the 3:51:17 performance.

Very close to her was Teichmann, who executed an evenly-paced performance to finish in 3:52:57.

Garcia Wins Giralda 5k
Men Sweep Field 1-2-3 as Garcia PRs

Ricky Garcia, middle, won the Giralda Farms 5k this past weekend in a nifty 16:19--a personal best despite the challenging course.  His long-standing teammate and Tyson Gay look-alike, Wismith Francois, was 2nd in 16:58 in the throwback 2011 team shirt.  Kyle Brogan, top right, was third in 17:35.  Masters Anselm LeBourne, age 57, ran 18:07...good for a 85.9% PLP.

Callan Wins Giralda 5k
Ladies Go 1-2 in Ashenfelter Tune-Up

Chelsea Callan won the Giralda Farms 5k, running a comfortable 19:05 for the dubya.  She also did this without causing any pain to any small children.  Nicole Salge, on the other hand, scrapped to a second place finish in 19:48.  For more about Salge's epic race, please see article below.

Men Go 1-2-3 in Giralda 10k

The MIB swept the top three spots at the Giralda 10k this past weekend, and with that, bringing home some nice prize money.  Although they haven't yet learned about the 10% Chuckbucks tax on all prize money, it was still a good day.

Sean Stetler and Steve Mennitt battled for four miles until Stetler, far left, pulled away for the win in 32:32.  Mr. Mennitt, far right, settled for the silver medal and 32:40.  The smiling young chap in the middle, Stephen Rathbun, was the bronze medalist with a PR of 32:48.

Pat is Back!

After some time off from running, Pat "MyPat" Butcher dipped her toes back into the racing circuit.  At the Rockville Centre 10k, he ran 49:30...glad to have her back!

Princeton HM Results

Henry Burt was the club's top finisher, as he ran 78:54 for 4th overall.  Steve Warren ran 1:29:26, Lucinda Warren ran 1:54:51, and Stephanie Edwards, above, finished in 2:07:50.

Kaspszyk Wins 5k

Sandi Kaspszyk won the Nashville 5k, in conjunction with the half marathon that her teammate Shannon McKenna ran.  Kaspszyk won by exactly one minute, hitting the tape in 22:37.

Anis Upset with Chocolate Chip Ratio

After last week's team long run, Mike Anis went to Panera for a meal.  To his frustration, the chocolate chip-to-dough ratio was "way off.  What the f***?"  He later took out his anger Facebook regarding the election.

Salge Knocks Over Small Child; Gets USATF-NJ Ban from 2017
During an innocuous water stop at the Giralda Farms 5k, GSTC women's team co-captain Nicole Salge knocked over a small, helpless child who was, according to his mother, "having the time of his life raising money for an orphanage charity...until that bully came along and started swinging elbows.  This isn't exactly the Olympics here, you know."   Salge's efforts to console the poor lad afterward were in futility, and the USATF-NJ responded swiftly, as the LDR Committee ruled her ineligible for the 2017 season.  "We have no tolerance for this type of behavior," a USATF-NJ official stated to ESPN during a press conference after their meeting to decide a ruling.  "In fact, we are going to propose seven new rule changes to prevent this type of thing from ever happening again.  Scratch that, we're proposing ten.  That will fix it.  We'll build a wall around Garden State to prevent them from continuing such malicious behavior toward our membership."

Morgan "Very Surprised"
About 2016 Election

After the 2016 presidential election, Tim Morgan was "very surprised" and now firmly believes that the world may implode from the inside-out, bringing about alien life-forms to electronically transport what few remaining Americans exist to live on the moon in a bullet-proof bomb shelter for the next four years.

Saturday Team Workouts:

The tracksters have started meeting weekly every Saturday morning at 9:30am.  The indoor season isn't far away!  If you want to do more of a distance-based workout, feel free to join us and do reps around the paved loop (1000m) or grass (1.5 miles).

Either way, all are welcome...the more athletes, the more energy, the more fun for everyone!

The Anis Angle
Please meet Mike Anis, one of the original founding members of the GSTC.  The only man who has competed at every club XC nationals over the past five years, he has a penchant for sharing, oversharing, pontificating, overpontificating, complaining, and overcomplaining.  And he wears this from time to time, as well, which the ladies seem to love.
"Reminds me also of an Iron Maiden song, "Aces High" but it might have been flying they spoke of, not running. Anyway, sometimes the running does prevent the misanthropy from flaring out of control."

Kyle's Koral

This week on Kyle's Korner we chatted with newcomer Amy Williams. Or should we say new runner? A young lady who isn't even two years into the sport has done multiple half and full marathons, posted up impressive shorter distance times, and is now a strong member of the biggest club in the state. Saying this girl has natural running talent doesn't do her justice at all. So let's get to know her better!

Amy Williams

Kyle: Hello Amy and thank you for joining us!
Ms Williams: Hi Kyle.
Kyle: So I hear that the club isn't the only that no you're new too, but that running in general is a fairly new thing for you correct?
Ms Williams: I started running about a year and half ago and started running more competitively about a year ago.
Kyle: What made you want to get into it?
Ms Williams: I just went out for a run one day and got hooked. I like the challenge and the feeling of accomplishment after a hard run or race.
Kyle: So the move to competitive running was natural for you. Did you ever think you'd be doing marathons when you started out a year and a half ago?
Ms Williams: No, I never would have even thought of doing a marathon when I first started. It wasn't even on my radar. I almost back out of a 5 miler race when I first started racing. After a year of racing and some encouragement I have completed my first two marathons within 4 weeks of each other. And I am looking forward to many more in the future.
Kyle: You've got some killer dedication! Does the running come easy to you or do you really work hard to be able to do what you love now?
Ms Williams: Both. Parts of the running comes easy but I also enjoy training and pushing myself to get better.
Kyle: I'll say, you have done some very impressive things recently that take a lot of runners a long time to do. What are some of your biggest accomplishments since you started?
Ms Williams: My biggest accomplishment this year was qualifying for Boston in my first two marathons. I also ran my first half marathon in 1:30 and was in the top ten overall females.  I cut my 5k time from a 23  in 2014 to a 18:50 in June of 2016.

Kyle: I'd say you're a natural but that would be an understatement. How did you come to be a member of GSTC?
Ms Williams: My running coach recommended the group  and I was looking for a group of runners who would push me.
Kyle: How has it helped?
Ms Williams: Having a group to run with keeps me motivated and the team support is great at races.
Kyle: What's your next big race?
Ms Williams: Possibly a 50K in March. I am running the NJ marathon in April and I have a few half marathons lined up in between.
Kyle: So you're a long distance fan over the shorter road races?
Ms Williams: I like both. I like the challenge and feeling of accomplishment for the longer distances but I like the speed of the shorter road races.
Kyle: A running super fan! What did you de before you found your love of running? High school or college sports?
Ms Williams: I didn't do any sports in high school or college. I have been involved in the 4-H youth program since I was in elementary school and am now a leader of a small animal club.  I have also been involved in my church's Sunday school program  since I was in 8th grade. Now I teach the preschoolers/ kindergarteners in the program.
Kyle: Lots of wonderful organizations! How do you like teaching?
Ms Williams: I love it! I teach 12 to 18 month old so everything is new and exciting to them. Even simple things like the moon coming out each night fascinate them. It gives you a different perspective on the world. I get to be apart of their first steps, first words and many other firsts. It's very rewarding!
Kyle: That's amazing! A rising star runner and helping our future generations learn to start learning.
Ms Williams: Both are very rewarding!
Kyle: Well that's all the time we have for this week. Thank you for speaking with us!
Ms Williams: Thanks, It was fun!
Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!
