(9/7-9/13): And The Enclave Contest Champions Are...

THE WEEKLY EMAIL

100% written in American, according to Sarah Palin

Fall Gear Donations

The GSTC has a long history of supporting established, low-income youth track teams over the years. This fall, we will be rallying gently used gear (trainers, race tech shirts, shorts, etc) for two teams in Newark: St. Benedict's and Newark Tech. While we have a nice collection already, please check your closets this week, and pass them along to 944 Hermann Road (North Brunswick) as soon as you can. Sadly, so many amazing young men and women lack the basic tools essential for success. So...let's help them get the gear they need to enjoy and succeed in the sport!

Team Uniform Update

The adidas uniform division, miteam, continues to stumble around like a college freshman around Frat Row on a fall Saturday night.  Really- it's that bad.

The aGSTC, the country's largest purchaser of adidas uniforms, made its third order of over $10k of gear in July.  However, it sat in the "queue" for 41 days without a miteam employee realizing it was a stagnant order.  They only pressed the "process" button when we called 41 days later, curious about its status.

Worst part is this: this happened last year, too.

Regardless, the uniforms have been expedited and are in production.  We hope to have them by the half marathon on 9/20.  Like everything else, please continue to read the weekly email for updates.

When they arrive, they will be available at Joe's Sneaker Factory- Florham Park store.

Enclave Brouhaha

FINAL SCORES
aGSTC SUMMER BROUHAHA
CONTEST

#gold division

1.  CENTRAL ENCLAVE (219 points)-
                         CHAMPIONS!!!!

13 (Week 1) + 32 (Week 2) + 48 (Week 3) + 19 (Week 4) + 36 (Week 5) + 40 (Week 6) + 31 (Week 7)

The Central Enclave earns themselves adidas gear at the banquet!  Look at all these points pictures, and bonus points for adidas gear!

And the enclave contest takes an unpredicted turn

2.   NORTH ENCLAVE (126 POINTS)
10 (Week 1) + 15 (Week 2) + 35 (Week 3) + 16 (Week 4) + 20 (Week 5) + 11 (Week 6) + 19 (Week 7)
The North wraps up a very strong enclave contest showing, as they cruise to a silver medal in the Gold Division.  Something tells us Brendon is going to be flexing all year, contest or not.

Hey bro.  Flexing was last week.
Chill cuz.  Flexing was so last week.

3.  PRINCETON ENCLAVE (100 points)
9 (Week 1) + 21 (Week 2) + 45 (Week 3) + 8 (Week 4) + 5 (Week 5) + 6 (Week 6) + 6 (Week 7)
The defending Brouhaha Champions wobbled across the finish line in third place, and all they have to show for themselves are pictures of Erika flashing and Ashwin wearing shirts from 2011.  Also pretty sure that "Curry in a Hurry" snagged those shoes from the shoe wall.

Pretty sure this is the first time this has happened in the same room as Ashwin

4.  WILD WEST ENCLAVE (55 points)
10 (Week 1) + 0 (Week 2) + 13 (Week 3) + 13 (Week 4) + 0 (Week 5) + 10 (Week 6) + 9 (Week 7)
While showing flashes of brilliance from time to time, inconsistency plagued the west.  Too many injuries, too many vacations, and they have Chris Schneider.  Lots of things working against them.

These are some hard-earned, creative points

#black division

1.  JERSEY CITY ENCLAVE (115 POINTS)
                           Champions!!!!!!

3 (Week 1) + 5 (Week 2) + 8 (Week 3) + 25 (Week 4) + 38 (Week 5) + 28 (Week 6) + 8 (Week 7)

Sure, half of the JC's points came from random pictures of Aya and Karl on their bi-monthly vacations, but the group worked hard to pack in the points with group selfies on a consistent basis.  Kudos to them, as adidas gear will be provided at the banquet.

2.  MORRISTOWN ENCLAVE (51 points)
4 (Week 1) + 4 (Week 2) + 18 (Week 3) + 15 (Week 4) + 0 (Week 5) + 5 (Week 6) + 5 (Week 7)
We thought they had a chance.  We thought they could be winners.

We were wrong.
And with one click of Pat's cell phone, the Morristown Enclave holds off Florham Park for the silver medal.

3.  FLORHAM PARK ENCLAVE (41 PTS)
2 (Week 1) + 0 (Week 2) + 14 (Week 3) + 0 (Week 4) + 10 (Week 5) + 10 (Week 6) + 5 (Week 7)
While a silver medal was certainly possible, Florham Park settles for the bronze.  Their Thursday night, 6:15 runs seem to be picking up, so 'twas not all for naught.

4.  SOUTH ENCLAVE (27 PTS)
3 (Week 1) + 2 (Week 2) + 10 (Week 3) + 0 (Week 4) + 8 (Week 5) + 0 (Week 6) + 4 (Week 7)

It's hard meeting for runs when most of your Pine Barron region hasn't running water, electricity, etc.  Our hearts go out to our southern brethren.

5.  BEACH ENCLAVE (12 points)
2 (Week 1) + 2 (Week 2) + 0 (Week 3) + 0 (Week 4) + 8 (Week 5)+ 0 (Week 6) + 0 (Week 7)

Ouch.

RULES
1.  Advertise the run on Enclave page beforehand
2.  Take picture of runners in enclave region
3.  Post on FB page

Enclaves get 2-5 points for every run; two is the minimum of runners, and five is the maximum number of points.

Winning enclaves in each division will win adidas gear by season's end.

Points will be totaled up every week in the weekly email.

Club Nationals 2015:
San Francisco!!!!

The Leadership Team met on Tuesday, July 7th, and agreed on the following items:

1.  If an athlete hits the 82% PLP standard, they will receive a $300 stipend toward their flight.

2.  Any athlete hitting the 82% PLP standard (for 5k this is 15:40 men; 17:57 women), the club will pay for lodging, entry fee,  and van transportation there.

3.  To qualify for this support, the athlete must run two of the six team races this fall.

4.  Exceptions will be made, by the LT,  on a case-by-case basis if two team races aren't met

5.  Any athlete on the "A" or "B" team will receive lodging, van transportation, and meet entry support if they also meet the "two team race" standard

6.  Anyone who "belongs in the race" (sub-20 women; sub-17 men) may go and run on an aGSTC team!  The more the merrier!  Last year we broke the USATF record with eleven scoring teams!!!

7.  Any questions should be directed to the gardenstatetrackclub@gmail.com email, whereas it will be redirected to the LT for consideration.

The Leadership Team.  They work hard.

Kyle's Corner
This week on Kyle's Korner, we had a chat with Diana Angi Stavrou. She is a member of our Steady Striders Group and has a big passion for running. The Steady Striders may not be the most highlighted piece of the GSTC when it comes to weekly news, but it is an integral part of the club for runners like Diana, who until she learned of it, didn't think there was a place for herself in our club. We aim to bring together people who have a passion for running from all areas and all competitive levels. And competition is certainly on her mind. She raced the club 5K at Natirar and plans on jumping in to a few more of the XC season races as well as perhaps jumping into the water for a race!

Diana Angi Stavrou

Kyle: Hello Diana and thank you for joining us!
Mrs. Stavrou: Hi there!
Kyle: Let start with how you became acquainted with the club.
Mrs. Stavrou: Okay - so I became friends with Karen (Auteri) through my husband Jon.  We soon became good friends too once we realized we bother loved running.  The day she suggested I join the team I was shocked!  I was like "people who run my pace are allowed on too?!"
And so I joined...  the first few months until almost an entire year I was too intimidated to really join in on any team runs or races.  But I slowly started going to more things and meeting more people.
Kyle: So you found a home with our Steady Striders group?
Mrs. Stavrou: Yes - to be honest I hadn't really joined the Facebook page until recently.  I am glad I did because I have really gotten to know some of the members more.  I don't know - I guess I really never knew where I fit in on the team.
I consider my paces to be like a middle range..  on the slower end of the spectrum when comparing to the elites and sub elites on the team but still a basic competitive pace.
Kyle: Would you say that your involvement in the group is helping you reach a more competitive level?
Mrs. Stavrou: Yes - my involvement on the team itself had definitely helped me.  It has helped me hold myself accountable and really train at a higher level.  I can always count on the coaching staff for help with training and my teammates to meet me for a run.  I was also flattered to be told by a member of the team that if she continued to run with me she would get faster.  That meant a lot.
Kyle: Are you planning on doing some of the team races this fall?
Mrs. Stavrou: Yes.  I did the XC 5K last week.  I am also planning on the Little Silver 5K and Ashenfelter.  Sadly cannot do the Liberty Half or the XC8K due to other commitments.  I am currently looking for a half to do in November.  Strongly considering Philly.
Kyle: It's a very nice course that I'm sure you'll be able to find company for!
When did your love for running begin?
Mrs. Stavrou: All the way back to the summer before I began high school - so 1996.  I originally joined cross country just to stay in shape for soccer and swimming.  Ended up making such great friends and loving running so much that I stuck with it.  Played soccer for one season before switching to spring track instead.  I loved running back then but hadn't quite learned how to push my limits.
So then I went to college.  I was on the ski team  and pretty much stopped running except for 2-3 miles every now and then to stay in shape.  It wasn't until after ACL surgery after a ski injury in 2007 that I really started getting back into it and being consistent.  I guess not being able to run for a year really makes you miss it.
I signed up for a triathlon after that and that's when I really got back into it and motivated.  Since then I really always have something in my plans to train for. Always having a plan keeps me motivated.

Kyle: Self motivation is always the best! Are you thinking about joining up with our new GSTC Triathlon Group?
Mrs. Stavrou: I actually did consider it!  I don't know - this sounds crazy but unlike most triathletes, I really don't enjoy biking. I am strong swimmer and of course love running but I just get bored with biking.  Plus, my road bike is currently in rough shape in my garage.
Kyle: I'm sure you could easily find a triathlon relay team to join since you love the swimming side
Mrs. Stavrou: definitely  would be happy too...  I should look into it
Kyle: Well that's all the time we have this week, thank you for speaking with us!
Mrs. Stavrou: Thanks no problem!
Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Next week's team run location will be at Manasquan Reservoir. As it's still summer, Manasquan will give us some shade while running.
For those who haven't been there, it's a five mile loop on soft, shaded terrain.

Brunch likely to follow around 11am. Park Nine Diner (3320 U.S. 9, Freehold, NJ).

Stetler Sets 6k CR
Neyhart and Rissell lead the chase pack.
In a distance so rarely uncontested for men it was the first time any GSTC athlete has done it, Sean Stetler set a new club record for the 6k cross country distance.  Competing in the Galen Piper XC Challenge, the Alumni Meet at Shippensburg University, Stetler won the race with an impressive 19:14 finish.  Club teammates Matt Gillette (5th/19:32), Josh Neyhart (6th/19:34), and Ethan Rissell (16th/20:00) helped lead the alumni to victory over the always-talented underclassmen team.  They won handily 27-35.

Is almost ready to roll!

Peter's Puzzler
Peter Bolgert is an esteemed member of the club who was on the DMR that won the club national title in 2013 for the aGSTC.  A former Marquette standout in the steeplechase, he is now halfway through a PhD program in the plasma physics department at Princeton University.  In hopes to raise the intellectual rigor to the club's weekly email, he designs weekly puzzlers to sharpen the wit, acumen, and intellect of the club...while wearing this onesey.

A swimming pool has four faucets. The first can fill the entire pool with water in two days, the second - in three days, the third - in four days, and the last one can fill the pool in 6 hours.

How long will it take to fill the pool using all 4 faucets together?

Anis Angle

Mike Anis is an aging cranky, albeit beloved and long-standing member of the club who takes great pride in his beard and his onesey.  In full transparency, we should probably also add he's never been asked to write an angle.  We just do it for him.

"Long story short, tail lamp out+expired insurance card=3hrs and $33 in court cost, and a whole bunch of catharsis."

Answer: 12/61 of a day, or 4 hours, 43 minutes, and about 17 seconds.

TMA

Here is a Peter's Puzzler for you:

If you're Peter, studying in Germany for three months, why is your car no longer parked on the streets of North Brunswick?

Answer: Your registration expired in January, and now it's been towed and stowed away for $20/day.  Problem is, you can't get it out of the pound until you show the police department your new registration in person, but you don't come back to the states for another two months.

Do you run 9-12 minute mile pace on your runs?

Come join the aGSTC Steady Striders!  They have their own Facebook Group Page, coach, and group runs.  Email gardenstatetrackclub@gmail.com and we will introduce you to our two co-captains!
