Fall Gear Donations
The GSTC has a long history of supporting established, low-income youth track teams over the years. This fall, we will be rallying gently used gear (trainers, race tech shirts, shorts, etc) for two teams in Newark: St. Benedict's and Newark Tech. While we have a nice collection already, please check your closets this week, and pass them along to 944 Hermann Road (North Brunswick) as soon as you can. Sadly, so many amazing young men and women lack the basic tools essential for success. So...let's help them get the gear they need to enjoy and succeed in the sport!
PLEASE BRING GEAR TO THE HALF MARATHON IF YOU'RE GOING!!
Team Uniform Update The adidas uniform division, miteam, continues to stumble around like a college freshman around Frat Row on a fall Saturday night. Really- it's that bad. The aGSTC, the country's largest purchaser of adidas uniforms, made its third order of over $10k of gear in July. However, it sat in the "queue" for 41 days without a miteam employee realizing it was a stagnant order. They only pressed the "process" button when we called 41 days later, curious about its status. Worst part is this: this happened last year, too. Regardless, the uniforms have been expedited and are in production. We hope to have them by the half marathon on 9/20. Like everything else, please continue to read the weekly email for updates. When they arrive, they will be available at Joe's Sneaker Factory- Florham Park store. Club Nationals 2015: San Francisco!!!! The Leadership Team met on Tuesday, July 7th, and agreed on the following items:
1. If an athlete hits the 82% PLP standard, they will receive a $300 stipend toward their flight.
2. Any athlete hitting the 82% PLP standard (for 5k this is 15:40 men; 17:57 women), the club will pay for lodging, entry fee, and van transportation there.
3. To qualify for this support, the athlete must run two of the six team races this fall.
4. Exceptions will be made, by the LT, on a case-by-case basis if two team races aren't met
5. Any athlete on the "A" or "B" team will receive lodging, van transportation, and meet entry support if they also meet the "two team race" standard
6. Anyone who "belongs in the race" (sub-20 women; sub-17 men) may go and run on an aGSTC team! The more the merrier! Last year we broke the USATF record with eleven scoring teams!!!
7. Any questions should be directed to the gardenstatetrackclub@gmail.com email, whereas it will be redirected to the LT for consideration.

Kyle's Corner With the infamous Newport Half Marathon looming over the club fall racing circuit this weekend, we at the corner choose to chat with long distance enthusiast Rachel Weigers. She's new to the club and only slightly less new to running, but she already has the word marathon written on her shopping list along side the milk and eggs. She has improved quite a bit during her short time with the club and it's not hard to see why with her energetic attitude towards what it represents. Here's your chance to get to know her a little better.
Rachel Weigers Kyle: Hello Rachel and thank you for joining us!
Ms. Weigers: Hi, Kyle! Thank you for having me.
Kyle: Tell us a little about your running career.
Ms. Weigers: In a relatively new runner. I've been running for about a year now. I ran my first 5k last November and since then I couldn't really stop. I ran a half marathon last April and am now training for the runners world hat trick challenge and the Disney marathon.
Kyle: The good kind of addiction! How was that first half marathon?
Ms. Weigers: It's was the unite half marathon at rutgers. My time was 2:21 but I knew I could have done much better with my time so I'm hoping to accomplish that for the runners world bethlehem half. The unite half itself is definitely worth doing. Lots of cheering and a lot of spirit. It also helped that I did my long runs on the unite half route almost every weekend.
Kyle: For a new runner you certainly have some good running strategy already in your book. What kind of PR are you aiming for?
Ms. Weigers: I definitely had some good guidance and am currently utilizing a running coach for my marathon training. I'm hoping for at least a 2:15 half marathon time and a 4:50 marathon time.
Kyle: When did you join Garden State?
Ms. Weigers: Last November in the hopes of finding someone to train with for my half. I was really happy to stumble upon some people that were the same pace as me. And so far everyone I've met at gstc have been really supportive.
Kyle: How has your training with the Steady Striders been beneficial?
Ms. Weigers: Absolutely. I was training with Erika Bow almost every weekend and it made all the difference. My long runs would have been really boring and I'm sure I would have quit many times had I not had someone to run with. Now I'm at the point where I can conquer those long runs on my own but of course I still appreciate the company. I also started running at about an 11 minute pace and am now a 9:30-10 pace depending on the distance. This will also be my first week of speed work so I'm hoping to improve further.
Kyle: What does running mean to you now as a part of your life?
Ms. Weigers: It's a way to constantly better myself. My schedule has become more hectic but running is hardly a chore like it was when I just started. It's just become a part of my life. It's given me the opportunity to constantly challenge myself and prove to myself that I can meet up to those challenges.
Kyle: How excited are you to be attempting your first marathon in Disney?
Ms. Weigers: I'm really excited about it. I figured if I'm going to be running a marathon, it should be in disney world. So I made it I to a vacation as well and will be staying there for 10 days. I'm definitely looking forward to it.
Kyle: Hey why not do it in the happiest place on earth? Will you be using the race this weekend for training?
Ms. Weigers: Since this race is too close to the runners world half I won't be racing this weekend.
Kyle: Are there any team races you're looking at trying to attend this fall? Or are you solely Disney focused?
Ms. Weigers: For now solely focused on disney. I have a really odd work schedule where I only have Tuesday and Wednesday off so I'm hardly able to make the team long runs and races anymore.
Kyle: Well hopefully in the future you can get that worked out so you can enjoy running with teammates again. But for now we wish you the best of luck with your upcoming races!
Ms. Weigers: Thanks Kyle!
Kyle: Of course! That's all the time we have for this week. Thank you for speaking with us!
Ms. Weigers:
Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

| Notarianni Wins Pier House 5k In a result that got away last weekend, Cara Notarianni continues to race very well this fall. In her latest conquest, the NYC resident won the Pier House 5k is an impressive 18:04. Very impressive...a sub-18 is certainly just round the corner.
Mennitt, Meling Win 5 Miler Princeton- Steve Mennitt and Erika Meling won the Princeton Healthcare System 5 miler on Saturday. Mennitt stopped the clock in 27:20, or 5:28 pace; Meling finished in 32:09, or 6:25 pace. Teammate Atilla Sabahoglu was second in 27:50, stating that "If I wasn't eleven years older, I would have kicked his butt!" Parker: Lehigh Valley AG Gold Will Parker ran an impressive 3:06:30 this weekend at the Lehigh Valley Marathon. He won his 45-49 age group! He keeps this up, we'll have to soon call him Flavor Flav. We're pretty sure he's gonna have to google that one.
Singleton 5th at Reservoir HM Two club athletes ran the Run the Reservoir Half Marathon this weekend. Joe Singleton was the team's top finisher, running 84:16 for 5th overall. His 6:26 pace won his 25-29 age group; he has a family conflict this weekend for the team's half marathon race. Dov Gertzulin was just behind Joe, finishing 8th in 85:51.
McDermott Wins 5k Heather McDermott , the Morristown Enclave captain, won the "Scott-a-Polooza 5k" in 20:52. Janet Patterson was the third women finisher in 21:44.
Blickle Wins 5k Carl Blickle , the aGSTC's Olympic Development Athlete Coordinator, won the Red, White, and Brew 5k this weekend in 16:58. With a brutally hard hill in the entire second mile, his splits were 5:24-6:17-4:47. Wow...that sounds like one hard race.
Graves Wins 5k; Sets CR Carmen Graves won the Teri's Run 5k this Friday night, cruising to an easy victory in 17:05. This sets the club record for the fastest road 5k in team history!
Harris Rolls 4:19 at 5th Ave Mile
Anthony Harris zoomed to another sub-4:20 finish at the 5th Avenue Mile, as the former club record holder in the 800m and 4x400m hit the tape in 4:19 in the Elite race just before the professional heat. Kristina Petillo, far right, ran an impressive 6:10 in her heat. Finally, masters captain Matt Baker ran 5:11, just a few strides behind national bestselling author Malcolm Gladwell in the 50s race. This performance equates to an age-group time of 4:28!
Robinson Wins 5k This is a great story. Mike Robinson, the aGSTC's newly signed 4:07 miler, decided to hop in the Flatlander Quad XC Meet out in Mansfield, PA at the very last minute. In pouring rain, running solo in the final two miles, he finished in 15:40 for the win. But he never bothered to register for it. So, did the tree fall down in the forest?
Leitzes Run Newark 10k Karl and Aya Leitz ran the United Way City of Newark 10k over the weekend. Aya (44:28) finished 10th overall, winning her age group, and was the 2nd women, while Karl (44:51) was 11th and was second in his age group!
aGSTC Goes 2-3 at Brielle 10k Chuck Schneekloth (36:49) and John Jankowski (36:58) finished 2-3 in the Brielle Day 10k this weekend. Dubbed "NJ's Hardest 10k," there was certainly not a flat section longer than 400m. Ouch!
A Message from the President Get us your gently used running gear ASAP!
