Kyle's Kanopy
by Kyle Price
PETER BOLGERT Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.
On this week's edition of the Korner we spoke to Wisconsin born and raised Peter Bolgert. He's not one to sport a yellow cheese hat, but he does have quite a golden theme going for his sport of choice. A strong runner with a strong record of success coming from his college days, he has been a top performer in numerous team races. Though he has had an on again off again pattern with his fitness, he is definitely back on the up swing running two solid races on back to back weekends for the club.
Kyle: Hello Peter thank you for joining us! Mr. Bolgert: I'm thrilled. Kyle: Can you start us off with a little back ground on your running career prior to wearing your first black and gold singlet? Mr. Bolgert: I started running my freshman year at Sheboygan Area Lutheran High School. Back then my singlet was green and gold. During my freshman year of xc, I dropped my 5k time from over 21 minutes down to 18:0-something, and I was hooked. I ended up having a pretty good high school career, winning a boat load of Wisconsin state titles in the small schools division. After that, I ran for Marquette where my singlet was blue and gold. That's when I started running the steeplechase, which became my best and favorite event, although you have the GSTC record in the steeple at the moment. After that, I came out to New Jersey for graduate school. Naturally, I joined the Garden State Track Club. And now my singlet is black and gold. As of this August, I will have lived in New Jersey for three years. Kyle: And when you make the move to The Latin Kings after your 944 Hermann underground lab gets you on the market you'll be set to wear solid gold! Are you planning on sticking around in Jersey after you're done with school? Mr. Bolgert: Lol, no. Just kidding. It depends where I can get a job as a plasma physicist. Perhaps, I'll work at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab for the rest of my life. I know of a few older scientists at lab who have done just that (excepting a few short stints at other institutions). In the back of my mind, I see myself going back to Wisconsin some day, but who knows what will happen. Kyle: Once you PPPL that's where you want to dwell? Mr. Bolgert: Lol, yeah. Kyle: Well while you're sticking it out in Jersey, what are your plans for this season? I hear you've been making a nice comeback from your recent hiatus. Mr. Bolgert: Yeah, I have seemingly spent my entire time in Jersey being hampered by hamstring injuries. This has lead to a series of comebacks, some more impressive than others. After taking a fair amount of time off this winter, I've been slowly getting back into shape. I recently ran the 15k and the 10k, my first races since club nationals last December. Hopefully I can stay healthy this spring and summer so that I can contribute during xc season. One of these years, I'd like to make the a-team for nationals. As for this season, I'd just like to stay healthy and run a post-Marquette 5k PR at President's Cup. Kyle: Perhaps your hammies still long for that sweet Wisconsin air. Well hey everyone loves a come back story so why not have multiple? What time would set you up with a PR at that lovely, super fast, post run beer fun 5K? Mr. Bolgert: I think my post-collegiate 5k PR is what I ran at Prez Cup last year. I was a few seconds on the slow side of 16 minutes. Kyle: Well we wish you the best of luck to dip under 16 this year! Any thoughts toward steepling in the near future? Mr. Bolgert: I would love to run some steeplechases, but that's not in the cards this season. In general, I have no qualms about racing while out of shape (as a quick Google search for my name will attest), but track races are different. I wouldn't step on the track unless I thought I was in sub-9:30 shape Kyle: Yes the track is a bit of a different beast from the road/trail circuit. Mr. Bolgert: By the time I could get in good enough shape, track season will be over Kyle: ..*cough,..'. not with nationals in mid freakin July...'.cough..*'.. Yes that's a good point. Mr. Bolgert: True! However, I'll be pout of the country. Kyle: GERMANY! Yes we know, we have eyes in every korner, not just our own. Speaking of travel, what are the biggest differences you've noticed between Wisconsin and Jersey? Things you miss? Crazy stuff you didn't think possible? Mr. Bolgert: Hmmmm. Biggest difference is probably traffic. There's pretty much always a heavy flow going down Route 1. It's still busy at 7 pm when I leave work. In Milwaukee, the only things that really back up traffic are accidents and brewers games. At home, if you're running late for something, you can just drive extra fast and still make it. Here, that's usually impossible. Anyways, I've gotten used it. Other differences... Things seem to be a little more expensive here, like rent and beer. The track club scene is much more vibrant here. In general, New Jersey is a much better place to be a post-collegiate runner. Pretty much every weekend during indoor and outdoor track, there is a decent meet about an hour's drive away. In Wisconsin, outdoor track is just cold and miserable. The good midwest teams tend to fly to California or Florida. And the population density of good runners in Wisconsin (like the general population density), is much less than it is in Jersey. Kyle: So we've got a lot more of us and we clog up the roads but least we provide a steady stream of running opportunities. I'll take that. What about anything crazy? Mr. Bolgert: Hmmmmmm. I'm not sure what you mean. Last fall I went to a corn maze shaped in the likeness of Derek Jeter's face. You sure wouldn't see that in Wisconsin. I'm not sure if I'd call it crazy, though. Kyle: I'll take that too ha. RANDOM QUESTION! Mr. Bolgert: Hit me! Kyle: What does a Princeton Plasma Physics lab patron and dedicated runner like to do with his time away from experiments and running shoes? What is the perfect Wisconsonian Weekend? Mr. Bolgert: That's a good question. Physics and running takes up about 99.5% of my time. If I'm at home, the perfect weekend would involve me regressing to my college ways and partying with my friends. Here, the perfect weekend would definitely involve. Bagel Bazaar in some way. That, and a few hours of good reading time where no one bothers me. And perhaps a nice date with my future wife. The perfect weekend would be a weekend in which the next Game of Thrones book gets released. Kyle: there you have it ladies, give him a good bagel and a good book and you've earned yourself a nice evening out with this romantic. Mr. Bolgert: I'm a simple man. Kyle: Well that's all the time we have for this week, thank you for speaking with us. Mr. Bolgert: Thank you. It was an honor to be in the korner. Kyle: Aahh flattery will get you far here. Tune in next week to see who we interview! |

Weekend Results
Women Go 1-2-4 in USATF-NJ 10k Championships | Fitzgerald cruises to the USATF-NJ 10k Title | For the second weekend in a row, the aGSTC ladies finished 1-2 in the team scoring, and for the second week in a row, Corinne Fitzgerald won a USATF-NJ individual title.
The women extended their USATF-NJ Grand Prix undefeated streak to twenty-three straight team wins, dating back to May of 2012, which is the longest winning streak of any female team in the history of the USATF-NJ Association.
The WIB brought much more than a winning hand, however, as nineteen GSTC'ers crossed the finish line, resulting in 1-2-4 team finishes. Cheyenne Ogletree was the second USATF-NJ finisher, in 37:56, leading the Gold Team to a first place finish. They averaged 39:24 for its top five finishers, as the Black Team averaged 39:48. In all, seven ladies broke 40:00, whereas just one did in 2012, the first year the ladies competed, and won, the Newport 10k.
Teaming up with Ogletree was Courtney Schofield (38:17), making her club road debut, trackster Alyssa Douma (38:42), marathoner Karen Auteri (40:59), and triathlete Jessica Penaherrera (41:06).
With Fitzgerald up front, the "Black Team" consisted of Chelsea Callan (38:48), Erika Meling (40:27), Katie Castroaguadin (41:27), and Aya Leitz (41:48).
The "White Team" finished in fourth place overall, thanks to the fabulous running of Aimee Chegwidden (38:45) and Sarah Schillaci (39:09). Also on this team were Kristen Prazenica (43:36), Brianne Teichmann (48:27), Lucinda Warren (49:54), Diana Angi (51:58), Angela Gentile (59:32), Megan Cafferty (65:34), and Amy Denholtz (77:10).

In the team scores, the aGSTC had their finest day in club history at the 10k event. Had the always-reliable Atilla Sabahoglu not cramped so badly and lost nearly three minutes, the team easily would have gone 1-2 in the team scores. Instead, they settled for a solid 1-3-5-6, the most points they've ever scored at the event. In addition, the top team averaged 32:29, the best five-man average ever, while the other three averaged 33:24, 35:48, and 39:35. This far exceeds last year's 1-2-3 finish, whereas teams averaged 34:17, 34:52, and 36:08. In 2013, the club went 1-2-5 with a 33:14, 33:48, and 37:07 average team time; in 2012, the club grabbed first with a 33:32 average. The aGSTC has significantly changed the game since coming on the scene in the fall of 2011. Earlier that year, 51-year old Gary Leaman was the top man for the first place, now-defunct Sneaker Factory, with a time of 36:43. The first place team featured Rochdi, Josh Neyhart (31:45, PR), Ken Goglas (32:13), Will Appman (33:18), and Ashwin Anantharaman (34:40), with Peter Auteri (46:37) playing the safeguard as the #6 man. Kyle Price (31:47) ran a huge PR to lead the third place team, as Chris Johnson (31:49), Mike Fonder (32:31), Ted Doyle (33:33), and Atilla Sabahoglu (37:19) rounded out the scoring five, with Woody Kongsamut (38:39) PR'ing in 38:39 as the safety six man. The fifth place team averaged 35:48- a crew that would have won the team title easily in 2011 and any earlier. Mike Loenser bounced back from Boston and ran a solid 35:03, with David Fett (35:21), Peter Bolgert (35:22), Edsel Flores (36:27), and Chuck Schneekloth (36:48) rounding out the scoring five. Brian Weitz PR'ed in the 10k, and in the 5k (his final 3.1 miles), as his 37:51 was the top finisher for the sixth place team. Mark Minervini (38:25), Mark Parisen (39:13), Dan Teichmann (39:24), Steve Warren (39:47), Karl Leitz (42:59), and Charlie Hood (48:28) comprised the club's fourth scoring team. It came down to a sprint in the final 300m on the HP track, yet Ezra dropped the proverbial "Hillel Hammer" on his hometown track. See the article in the Highland Park Planet (circulation 47) here. Dennie Waite finally had the race he's been waiting for all season, as the TCNJ grad won the 800m at the Princeton Open in 1:55.22. Lindsay Prettyman continued her strong season, as her 4:29.14 effort grabbed her fifth overall in the 1500m. Will Alston PR'ed in the men's 1500m with a 4:22.01.
In the sprints, Cyrus Wesley was 5th in the 100m (10.79) and 13th in the 200m (22.47), while Tyrone Ross (48.56) and Javier Montalvo (49.76) were 5th and 15th, respectively, in the 400 meters.
Bianca Marten had a fantastic day, as the Manhattan alum won the long jump in a PR mark of 6.16m, or 20-2.5. She also grabbed 3rd in the 100 highs with a 13.99 final.
Nicole Salge (2:20.48) and Erin LaCosta (2:22.36) competed in the 800m, as the majority of the team trained through this weekend.
North Face Challenge Two club members ventured to compete at the North Face Challenge in Bear Mountain, New York. Steve Bonica ran a sixteen minute PR to come in 65th place overall in the 50k with a time of 5:45:51. Brian Harris ran the half marathon in 2:10, finishing 98th of 759 participants.
Speaking of trail runs, Don Weise finished 5th out of 275 and won his 50-59 at the Rock the River 6k trail run this weekend, shaving 42 seconds off his PR.
Seeley Finishes 14th at Broad Street | Seeley, Zeoli, and Mickle afterward | Tim Seeley was the highest finisher at the Broad Street Run, finishing 14th overall in 52:00. It is the club's #2 fastest time over that distance, as he averaged 5:11 pace for the Philly event.
Adin Mickle dropped over a minute from last year, coming in at 53:52. His 33rd place was 5:23 pace and the club's #3 fastest performance at this distance. Training partner Joe Zeoli also PR'ed, as he rolled in at 54:41, or 5:28 pace, good for 44th place.
Greta Sieve was the top female finisher for the club, as hr 61:46 was the club's #2 fastest time over that distance. She finished 28th at 6:10 pace, just a few second behind Michelle Brangan's club record of 61:33 from last year.
Parker Leads Crew at 4 Miler Newcomer Will Parker was the club's top finisher in the MWA Run for the River 4 Miler. The masters runner averaged 6:33 pace to finish in 26:09. Masters women's co-captain Erin Varga was 28th in 32:55, with Ellen Patterson-Neelen finishing in 36:47, good for 56th place.
