(5/11-17): College Ave Mile Is Coming!

THE WEEKLY EMAIL

As exciting as Lebron's Buzzer-Beater Last Night
Top 10 Reasons
To Run
The College Ave Mile

10.  Your club is the host team...gotta be patriotic!
9.  Dude, it's a mile.  We ain't asking for a marathon here.
8.  The frat houses are just down the street.
7.  Free sports towel with registration!  #winning
6.  Scenic and historic New Brunswick scenery.   The course circles the College Ave Gym, the site of the first college football game between Rutgers and Princeton.
5.  We are hosting a big team potluck afterward.  Be social.  Meet some friends.  Get a date.
4.  Meet Malcolm Gladwell, the NYT best-selling author!  Okay, we don't know if he's coming, but we invited him, and he ran 4:54 last year as a 50+ masters runner at the 5th Ave Mile.  Impressive.  Hopefully the sports towel wins him over.
3.  You get to run a race AND a relay....life is good
2.  You give yourself a chance to be in next year's CAM video
1.  Run your race, and then watch 12 other races.  Way better than watching TV at home.  Or whatever else you might do on a Sunday.

There are heats for every runner, fast or slow, big or small, so circle your calendar

 ASHWIN ANANTHARAMAN

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

In honor of the holiday we interviewed the GSTC's favorite team mother, Ashwin Anantharaman. Always one to put on a smile, welcome a new member, and be supportive, his mother like personality is an integral part of our weekly sitcom of a running family. But don't let his warm heart fools you, he has a wicked wooden spoonful of talent when it comes to running as we've seen often at club races.

Kyle: Hello Ashwin! Thank you for joining us!
Mr. Anantharaman: The pleasure is all mine Kyle!
Kyle: How does it feel to be the Mothers Day Special Interview?
Mr. Anantharaman: It feels great! Never did I think I would have the honor of being on Kyle's Korner.
Kyle: It's right up there with flavor of the week at your local ice cream parlor or employee of the month. All prestige.
So when did you make the brave decision to commit to motherhood?
Mr. Anantharaman: I am still asking myself that same question haha.
Kyle: Did you get any disagreement from your family?
Mr. Anantharaman: I have a very supportive family...it is in our Indian heritage.
Kyle: Still, being a single mother must have been hard even with the support of your family.
Mr. Anantharaman: Well lucky for me, I went on Maury and it was revealed that I was not the parent.

Kyle: Do you think it will be hard to reveal that you decided to adopt after the unveiling to your child when it is old enough?
Mr. Anantharaman: I decided to put the child back up for adoption. I can't be a parent, I have to get ready for the President's Cup 5k.
Kyle: I can't imagine what a hard decision that must have been. Do you still plan to be in your ex-adopted child's life in the future?
Mr. Anantharaman: If GSTC pays for it....we can make it the team child.
Kyle: Oh will it be competing in the First Annual GSTC Sponsored Junior Championship Youth Meet on the 30th?
Mr. Anantharaman: That is a great event! I hope so!
Kyle: Let's shift focus back to you now. What are your hopes for this years Presidents Cup and end of season races?
Mr. Anantharaman: I hope I can get back under 16 by Presidents Cup...training was non existent in the winter due to laziness, but the past two months have been consistent.
Kyle: It's good to see that you are once again being persistent. What were the re-motivating factors you enlisted?
Mr. Anantharaman: Two things....one I was getting fat and two I was inspired by my teammates doing big things.
Kyle: You have been no stranger to big things yourself. A monster performance at the 2013 Newport Half Marathon and multiple Club Nationals appearances. What are your plans beyond this spring?
Mr. Anantharaman: After the spring season, I will focus on XC with the ultimate goal of making the 2015 XC National Squad in San Francisco. I think I am ready to have another big season if I keep my head in it and run with fast guys like yourself Mr Price.
Kyle: I couldn't imagine going to land of sunshine without our very own dark horse. What occupies your time besides the need to run and custody follow ups?
Mr. Anantharaman: The custody cases are time consuming but I toss those aside.
I am a teacher at Piscataway High School and luckily got rehired for a 3rd year! I am really excited for that and I also go promoted to supervisor of my summer recreation camp.
Kyle: I think if we had a GSTC back to school night it would involve half the team. Are you instilling the values of hard work determination and self sacrifice you know from running into your campers? Or do you supervise freeze tag instead of having to participate now?
Mr. Anantharaman: We are a team full of teachers which is scary.
I rule like Joseph Stalin! Iron Fist! When I say jump they say how high! And the most important thing is I win at everything!

Kyle: You must be rollin in lunch money. So being a man of many distances, what is your favorite event?
Mr. Anantharaman: I only take kids milk money when times are tough....how do you think I pay for all the races?
Chuck would hate me but I actually enjoy the 10 mile race....We used to have a Grand Prix 10 miler and I loved it!
Kyle: You must be a big Broad Street fan.
Mr. Anantharaman: Yeah unfortunately it conflicts with the Newport 10k and the team comes first.
Kyle: Well we are all happy to see you back into the swing of things after your brief stint with motherhood and winter hibernation. That's all the time we have this week. Thanks for speaking with us!
Mr. Anantharaman: Thank you for having me....I would like to wish all the mothers a happy mother's day!
Kyle: Indeed! Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Weekend Results

Albany Last Chance
Dylan Lowry continues to have an incredibly consistent and successful 2015 campaign, as the graduate assistant won the 800m in 1:53.83.

Antoinette Padilla had another big day at the office, as she won the 100m with a season best of 11.99.  She came back later to get third in the 200m with a 24.24, a few steps ahead of her teammate Alica Ross who ran 25.96.

Georgian Court Last Chance

Racquell Vassell had a great day at Georgian Court, as she won two events: the 100m (11.93) and the 100 high hurdles (13.96).  What's more- they were both club records, as she broke Asia Washington's three-year-old 100m record of 11.95.

Montez Blair, back in his home state, easily won the high jump with a leap of 2.18m.

Penn State Last Chance
Tim VanLiew crept a little closer to the USA auto qualifier this weekend, as he threw a season-best of 72.40m to get second at the Penn State Last Chance Invitational.  Last year, the Rutgers-Camden product threw 69.62 to finish 12th at USAs.

Brand new club member Britt Howell, a heptathlete, competed in three events: the 100HH (14.04, 3rd), the 4x100 (45.27, 1st), and the long jump (5.61m, 1st).

Coppin State Last Chance
Nafee Harris made his season debut here, after nursing several injuries all indoor and much of the outdoor season.  He finished fourth with a 7.02m best performance.

Rubin Run HM
Mike Fonder won the Rubin Run Half Marathon this weekend...by ten minutes.  He scorched the course in 72:44, or 5:33 pace!

Rochdi Wins DE Half
Youssef Rochdi
won the Delaware Half Marathon, rolling to an impressive 69:26 to outpace second place by fifty-six seconds.  He averaged 5:17 a mile.

Mt. Sac Relays
Weeks ago, two athletes competed at the Mt. Sac Relays out in California.  Tim VanLiew finished second with a toss of 71.23m, or 233-8.
In the high jump, Montez Blair soared over 7-1.75 to finish 5th overall.

Fargo Marathon
We used to keep tabs on this stuff, and then the club got waaaay too big, but we're pretty sure Karl and Aya Leitz became the first club members to compete in the great state of...North Dakota this weekend!

The golden silhouette of the garden state was seen dashing across North Dakota's largest city as they ran the Fargo Marathon
this Saturday. Aya finished in 3:14:06 (8th female overall, 3rd age group), and completing 29 of 50 states marathons. Karl finished in 3:34:06, completing 47 of 50 states marathons.

Shephard Lake 5k
Brian Harris was the top club finisher at the Shephard Lake 5k this weekend.  The 50 year old finished 5th overall in 20:14, good for second in his age group.  Joe Jennings was 24th overall, and won his age group, with a 22:39, while Peter Auteri (27th, 2nd AG) and Don Weise (148, 12th AG) ran 22:49 and 28:55, respectively.

A Message from the President
On my night table is Jim Collins' Good To Great.  It's a book that evaluates many of the most successful organizations in the world, trying to figure out what common threads they share.  One of my favorite quotes in Chapter 4, "Confront the Brutal Facts," that may perhaps be applicable to any work environment...and certainly our club: "Spending time and energy trying to 'motivate'  people is a waste of effort.  The real question is not 'How do we motivate people?'  If you have the right people, they will be self-motivated.  The key is to not de-motivate them.  One of the primary ways to de-motivate people is to ignore the brutal facts of reality."

Peter's Puzzler
Peter's Puzzler:
Last week's answer: $31.63.  You can "check" (get it?) that it works out.  For a complete solution, look here.

Last week's winners:  1st place goes to Ken Goglas, again.  He sent me the correct response about 15 minutes after the Weekly E-mail was sent out.  Matt Baker was second. Good job fellas!

This week there are two puzzlers.  The first is a riddle which involves word play.  The second is a geometry problem.

Puzzler #1: Forward I am heavy, but backward I am not. What am I?

Puzzler #2: There are three squares, as shown.  Using only elementary geometry, i.e. no trigonometry, show that angle C equals angle A plus angle B.
