Atilla Sabahoglu
Kyle's Korner is a segment of the club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.
For this weeks edition we decided to get ourselves a bit more cultured. The Turkish Tornado, Atilla "The Hun" Sabahoglu, gave us some insight on to where he came from, where he is now, and where he plans to be. Always smiling and usually wearing his own custom GSTC shirt, which he has replicated upon special request, if you don't know him from coming to team races well now's your chance to be introduced.
Kyle: Merhaba Atilla! Thank you for joining us!
Mr. Sabahoglu: Merhaba Amigo;)
Kyle: How has our favorite black and gold Turkish runner been enjoying the weather finally warming up?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I'm really enjoying a lot since I can start wearing my Wibram Fivefingers :) the only problem I have now the pollens that are making me sick :(
Kyle: Mm yes nothing can ruin a nice long run like seasonal allergies.
Mr. Sabahoglu: Yes, exactly!
Kyle: Well besides the 7th mile sniffles how has the training been going? You came off quite a strong Fall with that Gran Prix Win.
Mr. Sabahoglu: I'm not in great shape like last year but I'm getting back in shape slowly. Hopefully, I can get better in couple weeks!
Kyle: It was a rough winter for training.
Mr. Sabahoglu: I think last winter was worse!
Kyle: Good point. So what are you gearing up for this spring?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I'll take it easy this year since I got a lot going on at home ( construction etc). I'm planning to run good road races but nothing so specific for now. I need to see how fast I'm going to get in couple weeks so i can plan accordingly.
Kyle: Going for a repeat grand prix win?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I don't think it will happen this year. I'm guessing Mario will win it this year :()
Kyle: Let's not get too hasty. Just one race so far ha.
Mr. Sabahoglu: I have 21 years experience, I can guess pretty good. If you keep your shape at the sane level, you should win it!
Kyle: I might need some help from Luigi.
Mr. Sabahoglu: :P
Kyle: So are you only looking at road races or will we see you sneak on the track before summer?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I might, it depends how bad my allergies will be...
Kyle: Damn histamine reactions. Is this an American ailment or did you have the allergies in Turkey as well?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I had little in Turkey. It didn't effect my running. Here it turns to asthma so kills me totally. Any way i do my best all the time. It is what it is. As far as I know there's no coincidence in life. If I 'm having this, there must be a reason!
Kyle: Foreign foliage! When did you make the big move?
Mr. Sabahoglu: In 2002.
Kyle: So this is lucky 13! Why did you decide to move?
Mr. Sabahoglu: Actially 13 is my luck number! One of my friends was coming here for a marathon so I decided to try my first marathon in US
Kyle: And you fell in love with our wonderful colorful rushed loud personalities?
Mr. Sabahoglu: YESS!!!
Kyle: How was that transition? I'll admit I know little about Turkish culture.
Mr. Sabahoglu: I'm surprised! How do you not know about Turkish culture? The transition was ok. The best part I liked was the races! I could find a race every weekend. I could only find 3-4 a year in Turkey...
Kyle: Well now I know the culture doesn't enjoy frivolous running as much as ours. But you must have!
Mr. Sabahoglu: Yes, I do!!!
Kyle: Did you run for school when growing up there or was it always an on your own activity?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I started running when I was in middle school in 1993. I used to play soccer too but running became my favorite!
Kyle: Yet another soccer player turned distance runner. It's a new millennium theme. I'm stating it now.
Kyle: What do you do when you aren't running?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I spend time with my family, read books, fix my home and fix Iphones. I also go to work 5 times a week.
Kyle: Sounds like you're busy 25/8. What work do you do?
Mr. Sabahoglu: Yes, I am. I am the business administrator at Central Jersey College Prep Charter School.
Kyle: Possibly youth running recruitment spot?
Mr. Sabahoglu: I tried a running club at the school but didn't see that much interest!
Kyle: Hey at least you tried! I could definitely see a future Coach S in the works.
Mr. Sabahoglu: Yes, I can coach elite runners! When I ran 14:44 in 5k I was coaching myself. I have been coaching myself for a long time!
Kyle: Major self dedication right there.
Mr. Sabahoglu: Yeah.
Kyle: Well that's all the time we have for this week. Thank you for speaking with us!
Mr. Sabahoglu: Thank you for having me!
Kyle: It was my Turkish Delight!
Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Megan Coakley
By Bri Teichmann
Megan is a freshman at Rutgers this year. Originally from Tinton Falls, NJ, she went to Red Bank Catholic high school. She was formerly part of the Rutgers cross country/track and field team but found it really hard to balance running for the school and her academics.
She's a long distance runner and usually runs the 2 mile or mile on the track and 5k and 6k for cross. She loves trail running at places like Holmdel Park.
Some of her hobbies include all other types of sports, watching movies and hanging out with her friends. Fun fact about Megan! She has a twin sister and who is her roommate at Rutgers, too.
Welcome, Megan!!
