(4/6-4/12): Volunteering, Team Gear, Boston, Penn Relays!

THE WEEKLY EMAIL

Last week was an April Fool's joke.  The IRS hasn't caught us...yet.
Volunteering
The club has several exciting volunteering opportunities coming up!  We encourage our membership to get involved in as many of them as possible, as the adidas Garden State Track Club has always been more than just a running club.  We are a community of runners who support local running events, and we are a community that is at the forefront of leadership and innovation within the local running scene.  While we all value our own running experience, we recognize the great need and value to our donated time and energy for the best interests of the sport.

April 26:  The New Jersey Marathon.  For years, we have done the baggage for all 10,000 runners in New Jersey's biggest race.  If you volunteer, we will comp your entry in the College Ave Mile, a $25 value!

May 30:  adidas Grand Prix Youth Qualifier.  The aGSTC will be hosting this event, its first on NJ soil.  We will need club members to help us run a great meet and hopefully an awesome fundraiser!

aGSTC hangs out with 800m world record holder David Rudisha at last year's adidas Grand Prix

June 13:  adidas Grand Prix.  This is the best professional track meet in North America, and the aGSTC

brings 100+ volunteers to help run it.  Adidas gives our volunteers shoes, hats, and shirts to wear and keep for our services.  This year, the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt, will be racing the 100m.  Wow!

If you'd like to sign up for any of these,  please do so here!

The adidas Grand Prix spots often fill up quickly.  In the event there is more volunteers than spots, we will give preference to GSTC members who have volunteered in other events and have paid their 2015 dues.

Team Stuff
If you need any sort of running apparel, please contact Joe Jacobs from the Sneaker Factory- Florham Park.  He has uniforms, warm ups, and a great discount to all aGSTC members!!!  His email is joejacobs926@hotmail.com, or you can find him on Facebook.

If you wish to purchase team shirts, hoodies, jackets, scarfs, hats, beanies, etc., check out the aGSTC team store here.

Kyle's Korner
by Kyle Price

 Pat Butcher

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

Easter is a happy colorful holiday with hidden surprises and here at the Korner we couldn't think of someone that embodies that theme better than Pat Butcher. On this weeks edition we spoke with one of Master's biggest personalities. Always cheering for teammates, sometimes mid-race, she is a GSTC superfan who also competes regularly for the club. Here is your change to know more about her.

Kyle: Hello Pat! Thank you for joining us!
Ms. Butcher: Thank You for having me
Kyle: How long have you been a Garden State Runner?
Ms. Butcher: Since December 2014 Pretty much a newbie. However, my heart has been with the team for years!
Kyle: Who were you with before us?
Ms. Butcher: North Jersey Masters club.
Kyle: How was your career with them?
Ms. Butcher: Interesting.
Kyle: So I take it you're happy with the move you've made?
Ms. Butcher: This describes how I seriously feel about my move: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6Sxv-sUYtM
Kyle: Love that song!
Can you take us through a typical week of training for you?
Ms. Butcher: Yup! I run between 40 n 60 miles a week. Tuesday track. Since joining GSTC I run with other runners. I use to train by myself for most of my running. I take one day off. I run evening during the week and mornings weekends. My bed n message machine has become my best friend.

Kyle: The rest is just as important as the work! Is it a big difference for you to have training partners?
Ms. Butcher: Yes, it's definitely a huge difference, especially when the other runners are so encouraging, informative, and don't treat the training like a race against you. I'm so very thankful.
Kyle: Sounds like you've found your perfect running place! What events do you compete in?
Ms. Butcher: I complete in 200m to HM and Race-walk at times. I still trying to find my niche.
Kyle: That's a pretty wide range! I recall you doing something like 7 events at the indoor masters championships.
Ms. Butcher: That's me. I like the range but it can be hard. I suffered thru injuries and illnesses for awhile and got thrown off track with my performance results but kept pushing thru. As for the many events in the championship, it was a workout for me that day which I had fun with. But it doesn't compare to the crazy things I've done on the road. I'm a runner so I run....and yup, it hurts....a lot.
Kyle: That's where those rest days help out. What big races do you have planned for this season?
Ms. Butcher: Well, at my age every race is a big race for me LOL The Clinton 15k Master's Champ is coming up. Getting mentally prepared for it is tough.... I've developed such an allergic reaction to hills and need to get my act together. My feet are getting better since my surgery in January. Therefore, my hill allergies should start to dissipate LOL. I'm thrilled about this race however, because I'm part of such a wonderful masters team...aGSTC represent!!!! Yahoo!
Kyle: I'm sure they're just as thrilled to have your excitement to get everyone pumped up.
How long have you been running?
Ms. Butcher: You see Kyle, that's what I'm talking about....your sweet comment is an example of the encouragement that the aGSTC gives to all its members....I've been running for 6.5 years. I only started to loss weight and to keep it off. No one knows this but I did race in college many years ago. The 800m was my passion, n 400m hurdles was my cross training. It was 4 years of learning. I Raced the road in the X-C season without training. VanCordtland Park in NY was the racing field.

Kyle: You have quite the passion for running still after such a long hiatus.
Ms. Butcher: Is that what you call it? But sometimes I question why I run especially when I'm running up a hill, like today at practice.
Kyle: How about we end this with some words of wisdom for our runners hoping to be doing what you're doing when they grow up?
Ms. Butcher: Words of Wisdom for future up and coming master runners: Run with people, learn a lot, setbacks are a test, be grateful, keep running even when you wanna quit, give God the glory, appreciate those who help you....and join the GSTC, you'll be glad you did. Peace!
Oh, one thing I must add in totality, I want to thank Chuck S. for all that he has done for me, and of course the entire GSTC for their support, care, encouragement, kindness, etc....but Chuck S. you rock and I am so honored to know you and to be on your Like list LOL! Thanks again Kyle Super Star, Super Runner!
Kyle: No thank you for the words of encouragement and kick ass attitude!
That's all the time we have for this week, thank you for speaking with us!
Ms. Butcher:
Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Peter's Proverb

"Michael, I would like to respectfully call your attention to a few grammatical flaws in your Facebook comment.

First, you have committed a common writing error called the comma splice.  While this is actually acceptable in some countries such as Bulgaria, here in America you cannot join two independent clauses with a comma.

Second, you have a misplaced apostrophe.  According to sources Grammar Monster, Purdue OWL, Wikipedia, and most elementary school teachers, apostrophes should only be applied when indicating possession.  In the case of plurality, such as your post, no apostrophe is needed."
