(3/23-3/29): Men, Women Win 20k USATF-NJ Team Titles

THE WEEKLY EMAIL

We were close to just saving this and saying 'let's just do next week's email early'
Men, Women Win
20k Opener

Price Wins, Leads Men to Victory
This is how Kyle Price won Sunday's 20k USATF-NJ title.
by Ken Goglas

Kyle Price (1st 1:07:35) and winning have become synonymous recently, but he usually reserves those wins for the track and distances 5k and shorter.  The man in the mohawk has now broadened the distances at which he can dominate.  Following Price across the line in the top 10 were Ken Goglas (5th 1:09:01), Mike Fonder (6th 1:09:10),  Atilla Sabahoglu (9th 1:11:02) and Mike Loenser (10th 1:11:11).

The race unfolded with eventual 3rd place finisher Hector Rivera shooting to the lead a little before the mile mark followed by a huge chase pack of 20+ runners sticking together for the first few miles.  As the pack whittled down, the GSTC A team of Price, Goglas, Fonder, Sabahoglu and Matt Eder (15th 1:12:14) ran comfortably together through the first half of the race. Eventually Price broke away and chased Rivera down and ended up winning by 22 seconds.

Chasing the lead group and picking off the remnants of the original pack later in the race were Loenser and Ted Doyle (14th 1:11:57).   Loenser and Doyle led the B team to a 5th place finish with the help of big performances by the PR machine Mark Minervini (44th 1:18:45), Brian Weitz (57th 1:20:45), and masters contributors Nick Van Langen  and Karl Leitz.  Will Alston led the C team with a stellar time of 1:17:59, good enough for 43rd place, newcomers Steve Olin-Dombrowski and Tahir Qadeer joined the C team with masters runners Cole and Huryk to a yet to be determined finish.

This was the 30th straight USATF-NJ team championship won by the men, a streak that dates back to September of 2011.

Sieve, Ogletree go 2-3 As Women Win
Sieve finishing as 2nd overall women

by Ken Goglas
GSTC stalwarts Greta Sieve (2nd 1:17:55) and Cheyenne Ogletree (3rd 1:20:32) once again led the women in black and gold across the line.  The two were running near each other for the first few miles of the race and then Sieve pulled away and Ogletree held on to her third place. Following these ladies across the line in the top 10 were newcomers Adrienne Viola (5th 1:24:56) and Jessica PK-Redden (7th 1:25:34).

The GSTC A team of Sieve, Ogletree, Karen Auteri (13th 1:27:21), Aya Leitz (14th 1:28:18), Katie Castroagudin (15th 1:28:25) and Sarah Schillaci (17th 1:29:38) took the win and the B team of Viola, Redden, Regina Wang (23rd 1:33:07) and masters runners Poherence, Varga and Jones came in 5th.

This was the 21st straight USATF-NJ team championship won by the women, a streak that dates back to April of 2012.

Masters Men

Negoro Makes his Debut in Style

Harris and Huryk run together in the 20k

by Matt Baker

The aGSTC Masters ran well under challenging conditions Sunday to place 5th in the 40+ division and 7th in the 50+.

The youngsters were led by Yuki Negoro (age 54) with a time of 1:20:30, followed by Wes Cole (1:23:55), Nick Van Langen (1:24:40), Karl Leitz (1:25:46) and Ken Huryk (1:27:16).  Rounding out the 40+ squad were veterans Brian Harris, Lee Mooney, Peter Auteri and Don Weise.

The 50 + team was led again by Negoro with above mentioned veterans of Harris (1:27:36), Mooney (1:38:38), Auteri (1:46:19), Weise (2:04:12) all scoring.  Special commendations go to Auteri and Weise who both ran injured and gutted it out to help the team.  Thank you both.

Masters Women Finish 8th
The masters women's 40s team finished 8th overall.  Jenny Poherence ran very well, finishing in 1:44:50.  Erin Varga was just behind her in 1:54:14, and Prudence Jones rounded out the team scoring in 2:33:56.

aGSTC 3rd in USATF-NJ Overall Grand Prix
After the first USATF-NJ Grand Prix All-Divisions Championship, the unofficial team scores has the club in third place overall with 49 points.

Miles for Music 20k, in its fourth year as a race and as a championship race, has long been the club's least favorite event--one of the reasons for the club's low score total this weekend.  To no surprise, this event has fallen in overall participation every year since its inception in 2012.  Many dislike the course, as it's a circular loop that runners must complete 3.5 times to complete the 12.4 mile course.

The aGSTC won the USATF-NJ Overall Grand Prix in 2013 and 2014.

Kyle's Krossing
by Kyle Price

 Ish Robbins

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

This week on the KK we spoke to the incredibly fast Ish K. Robbins. He was super fast in High School, flew in College, and has kept on soaring to new goals with the Black and Gold. He has his mind set on big things this outdoor season and has laid out some big time dedication to get to them. The only thing that will be able to come close to keeping up with him is my bad humor.

Kyle: Hello Ish and thank you for joining us!

Mr. Robbins: Thanks for having me bro!

Kyle: I've gotta give the sprinters some love too. Lets start from the start. When did your running career begin?

Mr. Robbins: All started back in High School. 2004 as a freshman. I ran at Irvington High School under my former head coach Marvin Hawkins.

Kyle: Aahh, only two years before what I found out what track was. Were you a natural sprinter right out of the blocks? (pun intended) Or did you try out some hurdles and jumping too?

Mr. Robbins: Most definitely a natural sprinter. Born with it. My mother and Dad ran track when they were in High School. My mother ran for Shabazz High School and my dad ran for Barringer High School so it was a gift. But I did try out the long jump a few times. Was ok at it. But my coach didn't let me do it too much because I had a bad knee injury from playing football.

Kyle: When did you give up the pigskin to focus on the sprints? And do you miss it?

Mr. Robbins: At the end of my sophomore year is when I lost the love for football. I played pop-warner and high school but high school football was nowhere near the same as pop warner. Much more fun in pop warner football. But once I lost the love for it I told my track coach that once I go 49 seconds in the 400m without cross country that I would let go of football and make track my main focus.

Kyle: Did you break that 50 barrier while in High School?

Mr. Robbins: I sure did! My first sub 50 second 400m race was at a duel meet against Plainfield High School. My coach went nuts and it was one of the best feelings. That's when I knew I was gifted to run track. A lot of sophomores don't get to see 49 seconds

Kyle: Woooo! As a sophomore? Damn. Where did you run after High School?

Mr. Robbins: Yup. I ran 50.7 as a freshman. I was ranked #3 in the state for all freshmen.

I went to New Jersey City University where I ran under Head coach Steven Royster.

Kyle: What are some of the biggest moments you had racing in college?

Mr. Robbins: I had two big moments actually. One was when I PR'd in my favorite event the 200m at Icahn Stadium. That is actually my favorite outdoor track. My PR in high school for the 200m was 21.97. I dropped that in College to 21.72.

I jumped up and screamed when I saw that time. It wasn't THAT fast but it was a legit time to me. My second big moment was running the 4x200m relays at Penn relays in 2009. They have no 4x200m relay race for high schools so that was extremely fun for me, and a great experience.

Kyle: Both of those Stadiums are great locations for big races. I always get pumped at either.

How did you come about joining up with the Black and Gold?

Mr. Robbins: After college I met my girlfriend Asia Washington who is a former track star from Piscataway High School and Virginia Tech. We both were still training and running after college but running on our own. Chuck found my girlfriend and asked did she wanna join GSTC. She asked him could I join as well. He welcomed me also and I've been grinding with the black and gold ever since

Kyle: Have you had any big PRs or big performances since joining up with us?

Mr. Robbins: I sure did. I actually set a 100m record and PR at 10.8. I believe the new record is 10.6 now. Owned by Cyrus Wesley.

This year I set a PR in the 200m, 60m, and 400m in indoors. 200 = 22.3 60 = 7.06 and 400 = 50.03

Kyle: This has been quite a year for you. What are looking to do this outdoor season?

Mr. Robbins: Set personal records in the 200m and 400m. Go 20 point in the 200m and 46 or 45 in the 400m. My biggest goal is to qualify for the world championships. Trials are in June.

Kyle: I'd say you are certainly on the right track. BOOM! Another pun. Are you excited for Club Nationals as well?

Mr. Robbins: Haha!! Yes indeed! I'm ready for us to take home the trophy once again and for me to set more pr's and get more wins.

Kyle: What kind of serious training are you putting in to get ready for June?

Mr. Robbins: I now train with the sprint group's leader Tyrone Ross. He took me under his wing last summer and I've been training with him ever since. I changed my diet, more protein, lifting heavier, getting more flexible.

Learning techniques to get stronger and stay more relaxed in my races as well. A lot of that is from hills. Again the weight room, A LOT of distances over 300m, like 500s, 350s, and more.

Kyle: A lot of people over look that flexibility part. But you sound seriously dedicated. All those pieces should come together to make a beast this June.

Mr. Robbins: Yeah man! I'm a huge fan of Jean Claude Van Damme. Saw a watch a lot of his videos of getting more flexible. I never had any problems with leg injuries my whole track career and I will continue to do that.

But God willing and healthy yes come June I should be excited at the new track beast I have become

Kyle: I could think of few better role models than a Street Fighter. Well we here at the Korner wish you the best of luck this outdoor season! And by "we" I mean "me" because I have no staff.

Mr. Robbins: Hahahaha! Thanks bro! And much appreciated!

Kyle: Of course! That's all the time we have this week. Thank you for speaking with us!

Mr. Robbins: You got it man!

Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

 GOLD STAR

Welcoming New Members

Megan Cafferty
By Bri Teichmann
Megan is one of the newest ladies to join the Black & Gold.  Twelve years back, she tried out for the first ever North Brunswick HS lacrosse team, having never played a day in her life.  Megan immediately realized that running would become a part of her life for years to come.

For the last few years, she's had an on and off relationship with running, trying to get runs in as often as possible without really focusing too much on it.  She has always had a love for the sport, but often had nobody to run with at her pace (currently about 9:45 with her fastest mile being 7 minutes).  Recently, Megan decided to make running more of a priority in her life, since it's always been something that brought her great joy.

Having grown up in North Brunswick and attending elementary school in New Brunswick, Megan has known Erin Varga for most of her life.  She decided to reach out to her to see if the club would be a good fit.  Almost immediately after Erin replied, Megan joined the club.

Megan is joins the ranks as one of the club's many teachers.  She's been teaching elementary school for the last few years, and last year she went back to school for an additional certification.  She's currently teaching high school special education and loving every minute of it!  One day, she would like to start a non-profit, providing free tutoring services to students who are from low-economic households, especially homeless children in the state.  Megan was fortunate enough to have a quality education with plenty of support at home and she feels that all children deserve this same opportunity (which is AWESOME!)!

Megan comes from a very tight nit family and can often be found spending time with her two sisters, and my niece and nephew.  When she's not at work, running, or spending time with friends and family, she's looking into ways to begin and maintain the non-profit....and enjoying good craft beers along the way!

Welcome, Megan!!!

Weekend Results

Warren Wins Half Marathon in DE

Somewhere in Delaware: Chris Warren, club record holder in the 5k, won the challenging Caesar Rodney Half Marathon this weekend in 71:50.  A very cool article with pictures and a video clip here.  Nice to see our southern neighbor support the sport so well...but we aren't convinced it's simply because there's nothing else to write articles about.

Appman Runs 71:15 HM
Virginia Beach:  The Jersey City Enclave's Will Appman rolled to a three minute personal best this weekend down at Virginia Beach in the Shamrock Half Marath on.  Just look at this picture: short sleeves, beach, sun...looks glorious.

Going through the 10k in 33:50, he ended up averaging 5:26 pace and finishing in 71:15, good for 22nd overall.

Track Results
Down at the Texas Challenge in San Antonio, Bianca Marten won the triple jump in 12.16m, or 39-10.  Christina Epps, in the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at Coastal Carolina University, won the triple jump in 13.13m, or 43-1.

TMA: The Return

For those that don't know, the TMA is an award that has been a part of aGSTC lore since 2011.  It now stands for "Totally Misunderstood Award," although it stood for something else before.  Long story.

Anyway, this week's TMA goes to the legendary Steve Mennitt.  After not racing for seven months due to an injury, he was all set to race the 20k this weekend.  Chances are that he was set to have another top three finish, a success the talented young man from Rowan is accustomed to.

Regardless, the night before the race, he "dropped a steel platform" on his foot.  He didn't think he had insurance, and then he later realized he did, and thankfully learned it's just a bad bone bruise and not a break or fracture.

A Message from the President
This weekend, we are having a Leadership Team meeting after the team run Sunday morning.  We genuinely welcome everyone to attend and give us your input.  And come run with us beforehand, too!

The Anis Angle
"I have just discovered one of the best rock n' roll guitarists ever, Rory Gallagher. Amazing to me that guys like this lived, played, died, and have hardly been known in the time since their passing. Just incredible skill and style. "Classic Rock" radio stations are criminals for not playing this guy over Eric Clapton songs. Take nothing away from Clapton or the like. Just listen to some of Gallagher's work, simply mind blowing."  -FB post, 3/24

Peter's Proverb

"Quite honestly, Mike, the guitar is often considered the instrument for the long-haired, underemployed peasant.  To deepen your mellifluous experience, I would recommend learning the grand piano.  This word is a shortened form of pianoforte, the Italian term for the instrument, which in turn derives from gravicembalo col piano e forte  and fortepiano; the Italian musical terms piano and forte indicate 'soft' and 'strong' respectively.  It is the musical choice of those with class and culture."
