Cheyenne's Something of the Week

Instant heart attack.

Kyle's Korner

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

This week on Kyle's Korner we interviewed the famous GSTC story teller Adin "The Milkman" Mickle to hear if his own story is as fantastical as one of his common tall tales.

Kyle: Hello Adin, thanks for joining us!
Mr. Mickle: No probz.
Kyle: Lets start with a little bit about you before we get to the running. First off what is your perfect date?
Mr. Mickle: A human female
Kyle: Hey I'm doing the interview, I'm supposed to have the snappy one-liners. Let me rephrase. What would be the perfect evening with this human female?
Mr. Mickle: I'm not sure this scenario would be appropriate for a mass email...
Kyle: I appreciate your discretion and admire your straightforwardness. How about, what is your dream job? Or are you already employed at it?
Mr. Mickle: Unemployed billionaire, or Batman would be my dream job. But realistically I'd like to make money writing screenplays.
Kyle: For a while during the first new batman movie Christian Bale was both of those. Writing screenplays is pretty epic, you work in the movie business already correct?
Mr. Mickle: Yeah, I said philanthropist OR Batman because I didn't want to give my identity away should it happen. The two go hand in hand. Yes, I have worked in the film business on feature films, TV shows, and commercials as a low level Production Assistant.
Check out my page and like on facebook http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3232527/
Kyle: So you have put good thought into that. And that's pretty cool. A lot closer to the movie business then most people will get. What's the biggest/most well-known project you have worked on?
Mr. Mickle: Probably Silver Linings Playbook. It was nominated for Best Picture. No big deal.
Check out my LinkedIn page https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=79170893&trk=nav_responsive_tab_profile
Never miss a chance to network, right?
Kyle: Very prestigious. And yes ha I'll allow the networking. Whats the next project you're trying to get a hand in?
Mr. Mickle: I haven't any idea. You never can predict when someone is going to call you and get you in on something. Other than that, I am proud to announce I will be making some videos for GSTC's prestigious Road Relays and College Ave Mile.
Kyle: Understandable. But hey now there's something to pepper your LinkedIn profile page with. Can you give a bit on inside info on these vids?

Mr. Mickle: They are promos of course. Something we can embed in a website or email, and post to facebook. I shot some footage at the previous college ave mile, and had some footage from Road Relays past to work from. Both have an initial cut done, but we're waiting to get more details finalized before doing the final cuts.
Kyle: Aahh that's very cool stuff. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure they'll be very visually appealing when finished. Now before we segway into running which is exactly where this interview seems to want to go, why are you called "The Milkman"?
Mr. Mickle: Milk does a body good. I've known this since a baby, and since I'm a mammal. Studies show that chocolate milk is one of the best recovery drinks for runners. Club members noticed my love for the frothy stuff, and thus the name. Hey, the milkman always delivers. Now everyone is on the bandwagon, or should I say "milk truck"?
Kyle: All good point even with the hint of two classic pick up lines in the response. Well hey if you indorse the name as much as the product then I guess we were right to start calling you it.
Now that we're on the milk truck with you, how has your running been going rhis season?
Mr. Mickle: So far, not too promising. My legs have been super lethargic, and I've been dealing with what feels like a built up accumulation of lactic acid. Yes, I know. How ironic. The milk man is having lactic issues. In a nutshell I am worlds away from my PRs.
Kyle: Etremely ironic. But definitely not humorous. I, and I'm sure all of us, are sorry to hear that. You have had some great races with the club over your career and been a part of our nationals team on multiple occasions. Since the present is a bit depressing for you at the moment, what was one of your best running memories?
Mr. Mickle: That's a great question. I have two that are pretty close. In college I anchored the DMR at the armory. I got the baton in first place, and what ensued was an amazing battle. I ultimately finished second, but it was one of the most exhilarating races I ever had. It reminded me what it meant to race again. Another memory that was special was when my college team cracked the top 10 in NCAA regionals. Good times.
Kyle: I'm a huuuge fan of relays so I can relate to the awesome feeling that memory must hold with you. Let's take a trip with the Ghost of Races Future. What the next big think you're looking towards for when your irony finally clears up?
Mr. Mickle: I'm definitely looking forward to Club Nats. Heck, I'm even excited about the USATF-NJ 8k.
Kyle: Heck yeah indeed! Lehigh or bust! Well I certainly hope your running pains go away for you to be able to be a part of the Club Nats crew once again. The 8k is great race also. Is that what you're looking at as your "come back" race for the moment?
Mr. Mickle: I hope every race is my come back race. I guess I can make the USATF-NJ aGSTC 8k my tentative comeback race.
How come it's Kyle's Korner? It's always at the bottom, not the corner.
Sorry *korner*
Kyle: That's the spirit. And it was for alliteration purposes. We we're going to add Krazy to the title but that comes with obvious offences. And hey I'll ask the questions here sir.
Except that I've asked all of mine. So that's all the time we have this week! Thank you for speaking with us.
Mr. Mickle: Thanks for allowing me to.
Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Chris Kessler
No, this is not Kyle Price.  This is on "Chris Robbie"'s FB page!!!
Chris chose GSTC because he really likes how we have
multiple enclaves throughout the state. He works in Morris Plains NJ but lives down in Bradley Beach. He is hoping there will be people to run with wherever he is. GSTC can expect him to be involved both socially and competitively. He is hoping to reach the level of competition he had back in college and make connections with the great members of GSTC. A typical day in the life of Chris include his long commute to work during the weekdays. During the winter months he works longer hours due to his job responsibility. He tries to run 6 days a week and left 2 or 3 times a week. He usually visits friends on the weekends or goes to weddings. He moved around a bit after college and picked up friends wherever he was and keeps in touch with them no matter where they live. In order to recruit runners to GSTC he would tell people how it is one of the few sports you get out what you put in, which isn't the case with many sports.

WEEKEND RESULTS

Men Win Open Race at Paul Short
Johnson, Warren, Rochdi All Dip Under Club Record
Rochdi, Johnson, and Warren barrel down the final stretch in the new black uniforms

Bethlehem, PA- The adidas era officially began Saturday morning in the crisp Pennsylvania air, and what a beginning it was.

While not officially scored, the adidas Garden State Track Club edged Cornell University by two points for the win at the 41st running of the Paul Short XC Invitational hosted by Lehigh University.

What helped the cause was a record-breaking performance by the team's top three finishers who all averaged 5:01 pace for the 4.97 mile grass course.  Not only did Youssef Rochdi
(7th, 24:52), Chris Warren (8th, 24:56), and Chris Johnson (9th, 24:56) all break 25:00 and crack the top nine overall, they all eclipsed the previous club 8k cross country best of 25:05 set by Ken Goglas in the 2012 Get the Gorilla XC race.

This win bodes well for the Men in Black, as they were without 2013 Club Nationals A-Teamers Mike Fonder
, Chris Croff, Will Griffin, Steve Mennitt, Eric DuBois, and Goglas.  It will be interesting to see who grabs the top eight spots for the A-Team in December, as there are a handful of other legitimate contenders for these coveted spots as well.

Back to Saturday's race, Chris Schneider ran tough as the #4 man, averaging 5:05 to finish 30th in 25:45--the 9th fastest time in club history.  Mike Anis (26:26, 82nd) rounded out the team's scoring top five.

The group ran very well as an entire unit as they previewed the 2014 club nationals course.  Other finishers included Stephen Ellwood 26:32, Jarrett Kunze 26:55, Ted Doyle 27:06, Matt Eder 27:10, Adin Mickle 27:15, Joe Zeoli 27:26, Dennie Waite 28:19, and James Rivers 28:59.

Minus Rivers and Warren, the men celebrate their team effort

Gonzalez Runs 23:29 5k

Josh Gonzalez ran the NJ Race for the Cure this weekend in 23:29.  He was the 42nd male finisher, 56th overall, and tenth in his age group!

Steve Herring also competed, winning the 40-49 age group with a sixth place overall finish.

South Ladies Go 1-2-3 in Local 5k

Somewhere in South Jersey- The glorious South Jersey trio of Michelle Brangan
(18:21/$200), Angela Dunn (18:45/$100), and Lisa Jones (19:02/$50) swept the top three prize-money spots in The Race Down Broad Street this weekend.  It also sounds like they recruited the 4th place woman, which makes this quite the fertile ground for recruiting runners--as Angela first met Michelle here last year!

Catch the video Angela's husband made of the race here.

 Minervini Wins First 10k

Mark Minirvini won the Sussex County Skylanders Challenge 10k with a PR time of 39:10.  He broke his old personal best from three years ago.  Here, he is pictured finishing the Liberty Waterfront Half Marathon.

Evangelist Wins 5k in 18:40

Somewhere else in South Jersey- Robyn Evangelist won the Splash 5k in 18:40 this weekend, a big step in the right direction for the sub-5:00 miler.  Teammate Lisa Jones was second in 19:43, and crazy enough--aGSTC high jumper Gio Francesco was the second overall male.  We would have loved to see that.

Neyhart Wins World Airline

Road Race Challenge

Dublin- Josh Neyhart won the 5k World Airline Road Race Challenge in 16:57 while competing for the United Airlines Team.  45 Minutes prior to winning this, he battled an Aer Lingus runner for the entire 10k World Airline Championship, losing out eventually by five seconds with a time of 33:42.

Pontecorvo, Dublinski Race Long

Victoria Pontecorvo finished a half marathon this weekend in 1:29:54, and Allie Dublinski ran the Wineglass Marathon in 3:23.  Congratulations ladies!

Help Out Our New Sprint Coach!

South Jersey- Everyone, please meet Cardwell Wootten III, aGSTC's new South Enclave sprint coach.  Current working with several club members already, he is "looking forward to becoming part of the Garden State family" after months of discussions with the club, its leaders, and its athletes.

He is currently coaching athletes Tuesday and Thursday nights at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School from 5:00-6:30 and Sundays from 1-3 at the same location.

A former head coach of four different schools, he now trains high school, college, and post-collegiate athletes as a free agent in and around the greater Philly area.  His specialities are the jumps, hurdles, and sprints.

And, he is actively pursuing a grant to win for his athletes, so let's help him out!

Vote for him here!

TMA: Totally Misunderstood Award

Not only did this guy arrive THIRTY MINUTES BEFORE THE RACE STARTED (the email respectfully requested 90), he was in such a rush....this is what he looked like.  Upside down number bib number and everything while wearing a dress for a uniform.

As long as Chris Schneider is on the team, which we hope is a long while, he will always be a solid end-of-the-year contender for the TMA at the team banquet every January.

Thank goodness he is super fast.

Oh, and if you haven't heard about the guy running to Bermuda, here's the article.

Here's a the first paragraph teaser:

"An ultra-marathoner trying to "run" from Florida to Bermuda in a human-powered inflatable bubble was rescued Saturday morning after he signaled for help, the Coast Guard said."

As they say, "Common sense ain't so common."
