Kyle's Korner

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

Kyle: Good evening Kristin, thank you for joining us!

Ms. Cupido: Thanks for having me, Kyle!

Kyle: You're quite welcome! Now it's been a while since any of us have seen you in a yellow jersey gracing the paragraphs of our prestigious team e-mail, what have you been up to?

Ms. Cupido: That is very true!! Well, I finished work at my previous coaching job at Washington and Lee University in Virginia and have started up a new graduate assistant position at Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN! I haven't been able to compete for GSTC because of the move. I recently ran the Chicago Marathon and thought 'what am I going to wear?!' Probably should've been more focused on the race, huh? Haha.

Kyle: What an update! Congratulations all around! Sorry to hear about your wardrobe issues but how did marathon go for you?

Ms. Cupido: Well the weather was perfect! My training on the other had was not.. I hadn't done many long runs and knew I was going to feel it a lot earlier in this marathon, which I was correct. It was probably the toughest mental and physical battle I had running but I was only 2 minutes off my PR from Marine Corps, so I am very happy! My legs, were not

Kyle: I just did a marathon relay as part of a 4 person team and had to make my legs stay in it with me so I can only imagine the mental fortitude needed doing it for the full! Clearly you have the mental strength to keep up with your impressive running strength. What's the next big race you're looking towards?

Ms. Cupido: Thanks! I was definitely fighting myself. Well, with my performance from Marine Corps last October, I qualified and got accepted into Boston this year, so that is next! It will be a quick turnaround so I need to make sure to actually do long runs, since they are pretty beneficial!

Oh! And of course a turkey trot on Thanksgiving

Kyle: Ha. Gobble gobble. That's awesome! I love the orange jackets I keep seeing. But yes you don't want Heartbreak Hill to break you so get those long runs in. What is it like training in Tennessee as opposed to good old New Jersey?

Ms. Cupido: Well, training is training but we have a great park 15 minutes from school called Percy Warner Park and it is awesome! Miles of trails and all grass as well. Rolling hills, a little different from central jersey

Kyle: My my that sounds loverly. I'm a bit jealous of your access to trails.

You came with the women's team to compete at Nationals in Bend Oregon last December. Was that your last race in black and gold?

Ms. Cupido: Yes it was. It was a crazy course with some cool hay bales and awesome people! I really enjoyed it and look forward to racing with the team again some point in the near future!

Kyle: Don't forget the boulders, revine, and repeating 2K loops!

Any idea on when said "near future" might be?

Ms. Cupido: Oohh that 2k loop.. and it was even more times around for the men!! Hmm good question.. not sure on that. This is my first year as a grad assistant and that lasts two years but in the meantime, you never know! I will poke my head in to say hi whenever I am home and get the chance!

Kyle: Don't remind me.. Perhaps for the Turkey Day race?

Ms. Cupido: Possibly! I am racing in the Flemington one since it is so close to my house and we always have people over for Thanksgiving, so it makes it much easier!

Kyle: Aah nice! So besides all of the amazing fantastic super people in our club, what do you miss most about living in New Jersey?

Ms. Cupido: Oh man.. the language.. if you know what I mean.. haha.  Also, just Jersey itself cause it is the coolest state out there, duh!

Kyle: I may be stereotyping here, but aren't things a lot slower in general down there too?

Ms. Cupido: Umm YES. They don't know how to drive!! They drive very slow and it angers this Jersey driver.

Kyle: So the "pace" of life down there isn't conducive to this fast girl from Jersey?

PUN and a ONE LINER! DOUBLE ZING! Ok that covers my running joke quota till December.

Ms. Cupido: Haha! No it is not fast enough for me! That was pretty good. I applaud your efforts.

Kyle: Why thank you m'lady. All jokes aside though unfortunately that's all the time we have for this week. Thank you for speaking with us.

Ms. Cupido: Thank you, Kyle!

Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Allen "Flex" Jackson
Flex has been running since the age of 8. He started out a sprinter then progressed into a long distance runner. As his running career progressed, he settle in as a mid distance runner. He ran for several AAU teams in middle school, high school and college. If he could give advice to any runner starting out it would be to stick with it no matter how hard it gets. Conditioning and base phase is the toughest part but once you get past that, you will be mentally ready for anything. Running is 90% mental and 10% physical.
His go to song before races is based on where he is located. His go  to song is "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. If he could travel anywhere he would go to Paris, France. He finds the city attractive and has been wanting to go to the "city of love since he was a kid.

This Week in Club History

A Brief Look Back at the Team's History at the

USATF-NJ 8k Cross Country Championship

2011

In its first ever USATF-NJ 8k XCChampionship, the club scraped together its first ever men's and women's win at the same race.  The men were led by Tony Harris, who finished 2nd overall, which helped the A Team score just 19 total points.  Mike Anis, Tim Morgan, Chuck Schneekloth, Ashwin Anantharaman, and Edsel Flores were on the A Team.  The B Team, filled with three Rutgers students, Bonica, and Z-Mart, finished fourth overall.  The women scored just 26 points and won their first ever team title, as Cheyenne Ogletree won with a 32:07.  Crazy enough, there were only four scoring open women's teams!  The club not only didn't have a scoring masters team....they did not have a single masters runner.

 2012

Ah, the difference one year makes.  The club had seven finishing teams: four open men, one masters men, and two open women teams.  Rob Nihen won the race leading a clean 1-6 sweep, as the men's teams finished 1-2-3-6.  Cheyenne Ogletree won the women's race, as the ladies finished 1st and 3rd overall.  A masters men's team finished 5th overall in there 40s division.

The ominous clouds are Hurricane Sandy, as the storm hit New Jersey the day after the championship race.

2013

The next year, the Black and Gold had eleven complete teams.  On the men's side, Mike Fonder won the race, leading the club to a sweep of the top six team spots.  Ogletree, nursing a sore back, did not compete, allowing teammate Katie Chaput to win her first USATF-NJ title.  The three women's teams finished 1st, 2nd, and 7th overall.

On the master's side, the men's 60s were 3rd 60s, while the men's 50s were 4th.  There were no women's masters teams from the club.

2014

This chapter clearly is yet to be written.  However, the club will bring it's largest contingent- nineteen teams- promising to be the most fruitful 8k cross country championship in club history.

Who will win the individual titles?  How will the masters team fare?  This will all be seen in just a few days, as the club dons their adidas black for the first team race.

WEEKEND RESULTS

Masters Tschesnok Wins 5k
Masters runner Andrew Tschesnok, in a final tune-up for the 8k XC race this Sunday, cruised to victory in the Mountainside Cop Trot 5k this weekend, winning in a comfortable 18:09.  Keeping it a tempo effort, the Westfield resident not only brought home the gold medal--but a $250 purse.  In a later email, he stated, "I have to say, it is really nice sometimes when no other aGSTC teammates show up for a local race!"*

Chris Croff Mike Anis went 1-2 in it last year, thus making this the second straight victory for the club at the event.

*editor's note: any race with the word "cop" or "police" in it will certainly prevent the majority of our delinquent men's open team from entering.

Croff outleans Rochdi earlier in the spring before the two became teammates

Rochdi Wins 10k, 5k
Mahwah- Youssef Rochdi won both the 5k (15:42) and 10k (33:15) this weekend at the Mahwah races.  His teammates Nick Murphy (17:21) and Brian Harris (42:50) also ran in the 5k and 10k, respectively.

Croff Wins Maplewood in Motion 5k
Maplewood- Chris Croff busted some rust for the first time this fall, easily winning the Maplewood in Motion 5k in 16:00, or 5:09 a mile.

Masters Brangan Wins Hero 5k
Gloucester- Michelle Brangan won a race, and $400, at the Heroes to Hero Memorial Scholarship 5k with an 18:32 effort.  For that type of a winner's purse, we hope they were still able to raise money for this scholarship!  Teammate Abel Bermudez ran 18:08, finishing 10th overall.

Milkman Delivers
Adin "Milkman" Mickle, best known for his milk-ordering tendencies at bars, won the Jonas Cattell 10 Miler in 54:58.  Before you go assuming this is just another South Jersey race around trailer park homes and pick-up trucks, we were impressed to see this race has been around since 1980.

Price Wins Paramus 5k
Paramus- Kyle Price won the Paramus 5k Sunday morning with a 15:36 effort.  This is an event he runs yearly as they have a celebration of his former college and GSTC teammate and friend Andrew Capizzi, who passed last May in a biking accident.

Livingston Runs 3:05 in Chicago

Chicago- Brad Livingston ran 3:05:53 in his debut marathon last weekend.  He was on sub-3:00 pace until, sadly, he ended up running 8:00 the last several miles.

We feel bad for forgetting him last weekend, but he doesn't have Facebook.  Is that an excuse?  Probably not.

Livingston will be running the NJ Marathon this spring.

Kaspszyk Wins AG at RW 10k

Bethelehem, PA- Sandi Kaspszyk continued her strong fall season, winning her age group at the Runner's World 10k this weekend.  The Kunkletown resident ran 45:33, a whopping two minutes ahead of the runner-up in her age group.

Trio Compete at Princeton Invite
Princeton- Will Griffin and Archimedes Delacruz competed Saturday morning at the Princeton Invitational.  Racing the 8k course, Griffin was 33rd in 26:07, and his Brooklyn teammate was 50th in 26:22.  Joe Meehan was just a few strides behind, finishing 58th in 26:30.

Garcia Competes in
Green Monster Challenge
Wellsboro, PA:  Francis Garcia competed in the Green Monster Trail Challenge two weekends ago, finishing the brutal 25k course in 4:58:07.  To be honest, we got tired just reading about the event and the course, itself.

The race featured five ascents of a total 4000 feet of total climbing, taking runners through a single-track trail with much technical running throughout.  Despite serious cramping in the final half of the race, the North Enclave member finished 111th out of 143 runners.

TMA: Totally Misunderstood Award

Schneider arriving 45 minutes late on Friday

Not only was Chris Schneider a mere 45 minutes late to Friday's team practice, he also plugged in 944 Hermann Road as the park site on his GPS....not really sure how that one happened.  It was also pretty entertaining to watch him believe that the 8k race on Sunday is at 6:00am!

Next, not sure who gets the TMA award here--the guy who ran the thing twice, or the NY Daily News for actually writing an article about it.  Either way, we are curious what die-hard Minnesota fans may think of this (ahem, Greta?).

Finally, if this isn't a TMA, we don't know what is.  Who does this at 5:00am?

Running vs Football?

After the very unsettling events at Sayreville HS, this one New Jersey reporter takes an interesting stance:  shut down football teams and invite kids to do sports like cross country.  Read it here.

Quotes of the Week

"Tim Morgan giving chronically late people advice on being timely is not a very good idea."  -Josh Neyhart, via FB, on the blind leading the blind during a Facebook thread about promptness

"Well, I guess this is happening.  Time to get faster."  -Meghan Bruce, Fb post, upo signing up for the GSTC.

"I really miss being part of a team. It kinda sucks having to run alone every day. GSTC seems like an awesome team to be apart of! I always enjoy reading the quotes of the day in the emails"  -Ariann Neutts, via email.  We feel bad the quotes of the week have been pretty skimpy recently, but this results section gets longer and bigger every week! (insert Michael Scott joke here)

"And I noticed there is no 25k trail in the GSTC record book....mayyyyybe it should stay that way."  -Francis Garcia, via FB message, reflecting on his painful debut on the trail scene.

"I have to say, it is really nice sometimes when no other aGSTC teammates show up for a local race!"  -Andrew Tschesnok, via email

This gem is from South Jersey resident and loyalist Robyn Evangelist.  Not sure how true it is, but then again, this is the Weekly Email, not the Library of Congress.
