Team Results

Women Win
Broad Street Team Title!!!
For the first time in club history, the GSTC won a team title at the Broad Street 10 Miler in Philadelphia, PA.  Despite the brutal racing conditions, the ladies in black and gold ran very well, edging our home team Greater Philly Track Club for the dubya.

Crystal Burnick lead the group with a club record 57:07 time, good enough to win the overall female race.  Since the race scores the top three finishers on the team, Robin England (61:28) and Jenn Cronin (63:18) filled out the team's scoring trio.  The three had a team time of 3:01:53, which means these three ladies averaged 6:03 a mile....wow!

Also on the aGSTC scorecard were Robyn Evangelist (64:16), Emilia Perry (64:45), and Erika Meling (65:19).   Had they been entered as a separate GSTC team, their total time of 3:14:48 would have just been seven seconds behind 2nd place Greater Philly, who took silver in 3:14:41.

Anantharaman Leads BS Men
Ashwin Anantharaman ran a brilliant ten miler at Broad Street, finishing in 53:21 (5:21 average) and setting a PR in the process.  In case you were curious, there were two runners named "Ashwini" in the race; Ashwin defeated them both.  Tom Visicaro also ran a solid race, finishing in 58:52, while Kyle Broagan ran 60:10....ouch, almost sub-60! Abel Bermudez ran 63:51, while Adin Mickle, caught in a far-back corral, mustered a 70:15.

Bling Won at Shepherd Lake 5k

Three GSTC masters men competed in the Shepherd Lake 5k on May 7th, and all three came away with age group awards.  Brian Harris was first in his 50-59 age group with a fine 20:49.  Peter Auteri was 2nd in his 60-69 age group with a 22:55, and Fran Beideman was 3rd in 25:01.

Open Women Win 15k

Former Rutgers standout Lauren Jackson continues to have a fantastic spring, as she was the top finisher for the women's team that won the 15k Team Championship.  The thirty-six year old Augusta resident ran a fine 60:03 to finish as the third woman overall.  Karen Auteri was the secondrunner, finishing just behind her in 60:49.  Aya Leitz was third (64:43), Erin Varga fourth (77:11), Melissa Hill fifth (89:52), and Prudence Jones sixth (1:46:01).

Mark Minervini was 12th with a PR of 56:27, or 6:03/mile.

Masters Men 2nd, 3rd at 15k

The masters men's team continues to grow and improve, and the 15k team championships at Clinton was yet another strong performance by them.  The 40s team was third--less than one second from second--and the 50s team was 2nd overall.

For the 40s team, leading the way was Chris Sallade, one of the best 40s' runners in NJ; he crossed in 56:26.  His former teammate at Princeton University, Thom Knowles, was the #2 man, finishing a minute behind in 57:20.  Rounding out the scoring top five were Gary Leaman (57:37), Wesley Cole (58:29), and John Montgomery (59:03).

Out of twelve teams, the 40's B Team was an impressive 6th.  That team consisted of Eric Davis (63:22), Karl Leitz (65:06), Brian Harris (68:03), Kenny Huryk (68:26), and Peter Auteri (71:13).

The 50s team saw the NJ debut of Leaman, one of the best age-graded runners in New Jersey.  The 56 year old ran 57:37, age-graded at 83.8%.  Montgomery, Matt Baker (61:37), Brian Harris (68:03), and Huryk filled in the final scorings spots.  Fran Beideman was the #6 man in 78:35.

Men Go 1-2-3 in
NJ Marathon's HM

The black and gold put on a show down the shore, sweeping the top three spots on the podium in the half marathon.   Kyle Price lead the assault, as his 68:41 was not only a five minute PR, but an all-time event record.  Sean Donohue was 2nd in 69:27, as Steve Rathbun was 3rd in 71:20.  Like Price, they also ran personal bests.

Callan Wins HM

Chelsea Callan won the Long Island Half Marathon last weekend in a fine 1:26:40.  Wearing the GSTC uniform and matching pink accessories, she outpaced second place Melissa Moschetto by forty-six seconds.

Liberto PRs in 10 Miler

Three GSTC'ers Win Shiny Stuff

In the Rubin Run 5k, Aya Leitz (middle) finished 11th overall in 21:10; this was 2nd overall and first in her age group.  Husband Karl was just a few strides behind, coming in at 21:35--second in his age group.  Sherry Srinivasa, right, ran 21:50 to finish third in her age group.

Viola, Wallis Win Big Red 5k

Vying for both the "cutest couple" and "fastest couple" on the club, Stephen Wallis (16:43) and Adrienne Viola (18:46) both won at the Big Red 5k, a race on the campus of Lawrenceville School to raise money for the school.  Viola, despite studying for some huge medical exams in a month, managed a personal best while edging out teammate Katie Chaput, who ran 18:59.  Chaput, a teacher and coach at the school, has the club record in the marathon from three years ago.

Strange Wins Masters National Title
Marisa Sutere-Strange, above, won the USATF 10k Masters National Title last weekend, and it wasn't easy.  The 52 year old battled 45 year old Sonja Friend-Uhl the entire race, outkicking her by just one second to win 36:48-36:49.  So yes, she's 52 and averaged 5:56 pace for 6.2 miles...how incredible is that! This is a mind boggling 95.4% PLP age graded result.   Results are here.

Epps Wins, Leads GSTC at
Penn Relays

The club had another great showing at the Penn Relays last weekend at historic Franklin Field.  Like she usually does, Christina Epps lead the team, winning her second straight Penn Relays watch as she won the Olympic Development Triple Jump in 45-1.  Shene Davis was fifth in that event in 40-11.5.  In the long jump, Mariah Toussaint was third in the long jump with a 19-9 leap.

The men's long jump, however, had the most black and gold fireworks.  The club went 2-3-4-8, as Elbert Maxwell had a leap of 25-2.5 to grab silver, as Herman Kirkland finished 3rd at 24-3.5 .  Carlton Lavong was fourth in 24-2.25, and Kris Joint was 8th in 22-4.25.

In the 4x400, held on a cold, windy Friday night, the crew of Qwashon Powell, Javier Montalvo, Will Parker, and Derrhyl Duncan finished 5th in a loaded Olympic Development race of sixteen teams.  The B Team of Tom O'Hearen, Pierre Checo, Greg Pease, and Josh Chavanne finished 10th and were the only B Team in the race.
The men's 4x100 A and B teams finished 7th and 16th, respectively, in the Olympic Development 4x100 field that featured twenty-four teams.  In the above pictures, A Team lead-off Ish Robbins hands off to Chris Turner, while B Team lead-off Pierre Checo passes to Tom O'Hearen.

On Thursday's distance night, several athletes scratched or didn't finish due to the cold, rainy, windy night.  That didn't stop Josh Neyhart, however, from clocking a ten-second PR in the 5k, finishing in 14:40.

Tholis, Padilla, Roach Win at
Lion Invitational

The club had a strong showing at the TCNJ Lion Invitational, held on the Saturday of Penn Relays.  Three athletes won their events:  Matt Tholis bombed away in the men's javelin, throwing 64.88m; Antoinette Padilla blitzed the 100m field (12.26); Peter Roach, dangerously close to a USA qualifier, vaulted to a win in 4.85m despite windier, cold conditions.

Padilla added a third in the 200m (25.74), while Chris Mazzacano added a 4th in the pole vault (4.40m).  Several others competed well, including Dylan Hallahan in the steeplechase (2nd/9:57.90), Jarrett Kunze in the 1500 (7th/4:07.31), and a trio of ladies who went 8-9-15 in the 1500m: Laura Quintana (4:47), Liz Sweeney (4:48), and Alyssa Douma (4:55).  In the men's 400m, Tyrone Ross and Qwashon Powell went 4-5, running 48.29 and 49.16, respectively.

The men's 4x400 relay of Javier Montalvo, Powell, Ricky Garcia, and CJ Bailed were just edged out for the win, as their 3:20.16 was just short of St. Peter's 3:19.51.

Aya, Karl Leitz Start
1-800-RUN-GSTC Hotline

Claiming the club needs a better system of communication with its membership, Karl and Aya Leitz have started the club's first hotline, 1-800-RUN GSTC.  Unfortunately, their bananas haven't rang in weeks, as shown by Karl's confused look at the receiver.  Influenced by famous 900 numbers like 900-909-Jeff (DJ Jazzy Jeff), 900-454-HULK (Hulk Hogan), 900-909-FRED (Freddy Krueger), and 1-900-909-MCMC (MC Hammer), they considered attempting to charge $2/minute for their idea like these did in the 80s.  However, frustrated at the bananas not working, they decided to stick with the free 800 number.

Rissell Picks Up Gold, Silver
Ethan Rissell threw together a pair of solid races recently.    On April 30th, he finished second in the Paul Kaiser Classic, above, with a time of 15:20.33.  A week later, ho hopped in the Turkey Hill Country Classic Half Marathon, winning in 73:53.

Santana Sets 10k CR at Stanford

Two GSTC Elites traveled to the heavenly campus of Stanford University last weekend to compete in one of the country's most prestigious invitationals, the Payton Jordan Invite.  Steepler Carmen Graves was 10th in 10:04.42, while Alfredo Santana set the 10k club record in 29:48.

Predictable Team Selfie Taken Sunday
Another team selfie was taken after Sunday's run, and there were no surprises.  Josh Neyhart took up 50% of the real estate of the photo,  Zak is wearing an Ohio State shirt, the girls are happy, the Canadian, Frederick, is ostracized to the far back, Ashwin is happy because there are girls there, and as always, no one really knows what Kyle is doing on the far right.

Roach, Appezzato Win;
Price Drops Huge PR at Princeton
Kyle Price, continuing his dream season, blasted a huge PR in the 3,000m steeplechase weeks ago at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invite.  Landing just seconds away from a potential Olympic trials qualifier, Milltown's favorite son finished in 8:53.30.

Two of his teammates came away with wins in the super-competitive meet.  Peter Roach broke the club record and meet record in the pole vault, leaping 17-8.5 for the gold.  Alexis Appezzato equally dominated the women's javelin, as her 157-05 won by 12'.

Other top performances were by Skylair Hilton (6th, 5k, 16:56) and Tyrone Ross (9th, 400m, 48.33).

Parker Wins 4 Miler
Just a few weeks after the Boston Marathon, Wild West's Will Parker won the 4 Mile Musconetcong Run for the River in 25:28.  While we applaud the no-nonsense, black skimpy outfit while others are bundled up, this picture would be WAY sexier if he had his GSTC jersey on.  In addition, his ten-year old daughter, Gwyneth, placed second in her age group.  She has been offered a conditional full ride to GSTC University for the 2024-2025 season.

Ward PRs in DC 5k

Katie Ward traveled down to Washington DC to run the Race for the Cure with her family,  and she ran a 5k PR in 23:05.  Very awesome!

Morgan Completes Linked-In Profile
Currently trending on Twitter is a post announcing that Tim Morgan has finally completed his

The Anis Angle
Please meet Mike Anis, one of the original founding members of the GSTC.  The only man who has competed at every club XC nationals over the past five years, he has a penchant for sharing, oversharing, pontificating, overpontificating, complaining, and overcomplaining.  And he wears this from time to time, as well, which the ladies seem to love.
Looks like I'm on my own, from here on out, as Peter moved back to Wisconsin.  That's okay. We may need some new ideas.  Got one?  Tell me.

Kyle's Korner

In this edition of Kyle's Korner we chat with two of our elite runners, Carmen Graves and Alfredo Santana. Both competed at this year's Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford. The meet which has been held for the last 21 years is highly competitive and very hard to gain entry to. Neither runner had quite the performance they were looking for, but both were super grateful to be able to attend and we were super pumped to be able to send them.

Carmen Graves

Kyle: What did it mean to you to be able to compete at this big event?
Ms. Graves: Competing at Payton Jordan for the first time was a big honor, especially being in the top heat running with some of the best in the country/world. I am very thankful for Garden State TC for providing me with the opportunity to compete at such a prestigious event early in the season.
Kyle: Were you fan-girling while you were out in Cali with the elites or were you trying to keep it all focused and business?
Ms. Graves: he elite running world is actually pretty small. All the same runners seem to flock to the same meets, so I've already experienced the "fan-girling" stage. I try to keep focused at big meets but sometimes it's hard not to compare yourself with other competitors accomplishments. But i have learned that it's a waste of energy. We are all runner's with the same goals of striving to be better, whether we run 9 min miles or 4 min miles.
Kyle: Many of us watched your race and got the visual side of it. Can you give us the mental side of how your race went?
Ms. Graves: I felt pretty good going into the race. My goal was to stay with the lead pack but in retrospect my plan kinda back fired. By staying with the lead pack for the first mile I lost a lot of energy fighting for space on the track and over the barriers. I found myself out of rhythm and constantly decelerating and surging to get back up to speed. Essentially I wasn't running my race. With 3 laps to go the fatigue hit me hard. With 2 laps to go I was mentally like "sh*t I can't move." We've all been there. At that point I was just trying to make sure I made it over the hurdles to finish because my legs felt like lead. Steeple is a tricky race and there are so many variables that go into the end result. I learned the hard way on this one.
Kyle: What's the next step for you?
Ms. Graves: SWAT last chance meet. Try to get that Olympic Trials qualifying mark (9:53).

Alfredo Santana

Kyle: How excited were you to be out there?
Mr. Santana: Super excited, it's a prestigious meet so just getting in was a huge honor.
Kyle: How did you cope with the time change and late race time?
Mr. Santana: That was probably one of the harder things for me, which I'm not sure if I handled it too well. I tried to force myself to sleep as late as possible so I could counter the jet lag and readjust my internal clock.
Kyle: Can you give us a breakdown of your race?
Mr. Santana: It was definitely one of the worse races of my career, not so much in terms of time but where I should have been physically and where I was at mentally. I went out on pace (14:20) through 5K but the because I have yet to run a fast track 10K the distance humbled me and I died hard towards the end, still was able to PR by 2 seconds but I know I'm way fitter than the time implies. It was a rough day (night) for me.
Kyle: Are planning on taking revenge on the event, coming in smarter and stronger?
Mr. Santana: Definitely in the future, not sure how soon but it's eventually going to be one of my bigger focuses as I get a bit older, you could call Payton Jordan a test run. I might try to see where my legs are at in the 1500 and the 5K more immediately, but I will definitely try to run another super fast 10K within the next year, I'm just not sure when.

Highland Park Hometown Hero - Volume 1
This is the First Edition of Triple H! "I'm the Game!"
No not that Triple H, the Highland Park Hometown Hero! On this new segment of the email we will catch up with an HPark workout crew member who has recently done some awesome running with the club. Winning a race, setting a personal best, or just getting out there and grinding their running shoes in any impressive way we hear about. Want to be featured on future Triple H's? Come join us Mondays Wednesdays and Saturday for workouts!

Laura Quintana

How good did it feel to run that great 1500 at TCNJ?
Laura: Of course it always feels great to run fast ahead of the pack but I finished with the feeling that I could've gone faster, which I do not like.
How long have you been training at Highland Park?
Laura: This is my second season there with GSTC.
Do you feel you're improving and getting back to where you want to be because of it?
Laura: I 100% know that I'm improving while running with y'all.
What's your next move for this season?
Laura: My next move is to run a 4:41 1500, 2:18  800 or faster, and a 28 200 (or faster) in practice just for sh*ts and giggles.

Ryan DeGregorio

So you recently ran 2:02 at the TCNJ invite 800. How pumped are you?
Ryan: Dude I'm super excited.
You've been training super hard at workouts and it appears it's paying off.
Ryan: It definitely is and it feels great!
You came out the gates this season with a nice Mile PR, now this, you gunning for sub 2:00 this season?
Ryan: Yes it would be fantastic if I can break 2:00 this season! I've been looking forward to this moment for years!
You feel that your weekly workouts are preparing you well to succeed?
Ryan: Yes, absolutely. And I would not be in the shape I'm in without my awesome teammates pushing me at Highland Park.
How long have you been training there?
Ryan: Since my freshman year at Rutgers in the fall of 2013.
I take you'll be continuing that trend for a while?
Ryan: You bet! The grind never stops haha.
