(11/10-11/16): Big Day on the 'Farm; LOTS of QOTW

THE WEEKLY EMAIL

"To be honest, I just go right to the Quotes of the Week"
4 Points From the Podium
M40s Gain on Clifton; Ashenfelter Lingers As Year Finale
Andrew Tschesnok rolls into the finish as the club's #1 masters finisher at Sunday's 10k championships.
Madison-  Overshadowed by a national championship trophy and a Penn Relays wheel, the living room in the aGSTC Headquarters has a pile of USATF-NJ plaques.  They are presented to the top three teams in every age group every year, and at this point, they're used more as paper weights than anything else.  However, if one was to wade through them, one might make one observation:  there isn't a masters plaque in the collection.

Well, not quite yet.

After a spring full of losing to both Clifton and Do Run in every race, the fall has been an entirely different story.  After Monday's USATF-NJ 10k Championship at Giralda Farms, the group has now scratched its way back to fourth place, just a mere four points away from a third place finish....and a masters team plaque, a first in club history.

Andrew Tschesnok, while far from happy with his performance, was the group's #1 finisher, hitting the line at 38:08.  Wes Cole, in his club debut, was the team's #2 man at 39:08.   Nick Van Langen continues to be a consistent performer for the 40s group, as he was the #3 man at 39:58.  Captain  Matt Baker was fourth in 40:59, and Kenny Huryk, slowly gaining back fitness lost from an early-season injury, was the group's final scoring member at 42:56.

The team finished fourth overall with a  40:14 average, totaling 3:21:10 for the five scoring members.
Wes Cole finishes as the #2 man in his club debut

With one remaining race, the Ashenfelter 8k on Thanksgiving, the aGSTC 40s team now trails Clifton by just four points, 59-55.  With the exception of the half marathon, the BGs have outscored them in every fall race: 5k XC (10-9), 8k XC (12-9), and the 10k road (7-5).  To tie for third, the Gold would need a 2nd with CRR getting 5th; to win outright, the silver medal would need a 6th or worse.

All of which, especially on the unpredictability of Turkey Day, are realistic scenarios.

With the pressure mounting in the finale of 2014, this impressive comeback may result in a 3rd place plaque.  Or, it may result in a fourth place handshake.  Either way, when considering this group finished 9th in 2012 with just ten points thanks to just two scoring races, it's been a big year for the 40s men's masters team.  And with a growing, talented squad forming for club nationals on December 13th, 2015 should be an even bigger year.

Men's 50s Finish 6th; 40s B 10th
Brian Harris  finishes
It was another strong outing for the men's masters group Sunday.  Along with the 40s a-team getting 6th, the b-team finish 10th.  This consisted of  Brian Harris (43:40),  Peter Auteri (45:03), Francis Beideman (47:28), Jatin Meghani (52:31), and John Bergacs (56:48).

The 50s group continued their string run in 2014, as they snagged 6th overall with a 46:48 average.  Matt Baker (40:59) continued to lead the charge, while teammates Harris, Auteri, Beideman, and Bergacs rounded out the scoring five.

For more information on the masters men's team, check the QOTW below, as Captain Matt Baker sue it all up quite well.

Women Go 1-2-3 in Giralda 5k
Evangelist, Salge, Douma Sharpen For Nationals

Madison- The aGSTC ladies took another big step forward as they prepare for club nationals in a few weeks.  In the Giralda Farms 5k, a small group of them swept the top three podium spots--a good sign of bigger things to come in Bethlehem in a month.

Robyn Evangelist continued to improve this fall, as she dipped under 6:00 pace with her season-best 18:37 win over the hilly course.  Nicole Salge, breaking 19:00 for the first time in her career, was just a few steps behind her in 18:46.  Alyssa Douma, who continues to regain fitness from a rocky spring and summer of illness and injury, was 3rd overall in 19:05.

Rochdi, Price Go 1-2 in Giralda 10k

Like the women, a few men used the Giralda race--a non-team championship event--as a tune-up for a national championship just one month away.

And at a quick glance, it looks like they're ready to go.

Youssef winning the 10k

Youssef Rochdi continued his fine 2014 season, rolling to victory in the 10k with a 31:32 effort.  Uncontested for the entire race, the Rockaway resident cruised to 5:04 miles throughout, finishing as the aGSTC's #2 performance of all-time.  Jeff Perrella still owns the club record of 31:13 on May 12, 2012.

Kyle Price, club record holder in the 3,000m steeplechase, ran brilliantly, as he sat closely in fourth place until the final mile, whereas he made a strong move to hold on for second. His 32:33 is good for #12 on the club's all-time list.

Ted Doyle and Atilla Sabahoglu finished 8th and 9th at 33:54 and 33:57, respectively.  Kyle Mahoney, in his first race in black, was just a few places back at #13 with a 35:14.  Karen Auteri was the 4th female to come in with a 40:20, hence walking away with a paycheck as the top five win money.

Mark Domradsky ran 47:07, Steve Olin ran 51:33, while Jennifer Dos Santos ran 52:54.

Men: Giralda 5k
Several men hopped in the Giralda 5k for fitness test, and many walked away with season bests, medals, or better yet: all-time personal bests.

Jon Lindenauer and Peter Bolgert (left) finished 2-3 for the Gold, with respective finishing times of 16:10 and 16:17.  Mark Parisen (center) was 6th overall, running an all-time best of 17:00.

Ezra Chefitz (right) perhaps had the biggest drop of the day, running 18:03 for an incredible PR by almost a full minute.  Ryan Degregario was 13th in 18:19, Josh Kumar was 18th in 19:01, and Susan Goglas ran 27:53.

Sue Goglas is congratulated Sunday by her aGSTC coach, Carmine Denicola.

Steady Strider Results

Recent new member Kristina Petillo, after just running the NYC Marathon last weekend in 4:12:04, finished the Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon in Florida Saturday night, a race that starts at 10pm! Despite probably still recovering from marathon and the fact that the skies opened up at the race start, she was able to finish in the rain with a sub 2 at 1:59:30! Although not a PR, it was a course record for her. She has run this event 3 years in a row, with a 2012 finish time of 2:23:09, a 2013 time of 2:07:01, and this year a sub-2. We love seeing progress like this!  Her medal is on the right.

SS Co-captain Erika Bow had a similar triple threat experience, PR'ing Saturday morning in the Trenton Half. In 2012 her finish time was 2:29:48, in 2013, she PR'd at 2:19:24, and this yr with 2:02:48, almost a 6 minute PR from her previous best this past August. Next goal is a sub-2 and she hopes to get there and beyond with GSTC!

Callan Breaks 18; Brangan Wins 5k
Chelsea Callan won the 5k Rook Run this weekend, finally cracking 18:00 this season after months of hard work.  As she preps for
nationals, her 17:57 is a great indicator that she is getting on top of her game at the right time of the year!

Also, Michelle Brangan and Lisa Jones ran in the NJEA Boardwalk 5k on Friday morning down in Atlantic City.  Brangan was first overall woman and second overall in 19:08, while Jones was second woman and fourth overall in `19:48.

Twitter Follower of the Week
As you may know, Josh Neyhart runs the club's Tinder page.  Oh wait, we mean Twitter.  If you haven't followed us @GardenStateTC, you should.  In fact, 749 people are following us--a whopping 36 more than last week.  Yeah, Josh!

This week's Twitter Follower of the Week is @Junk Yard Dogs.  This is the name of a real, actual running club over in Europe somewhere.  We love how they ask the question in their bio, "Who let the dogs out?"  Perhaps a aGSTC vs JYD dual meet should be arranged in 2015.  Another solid follower.

Cheyenne's Something of the Week

She is still very sad about Halloween ending.  She had no things of the week for us.

NEXT WEEK:  Track Time
Believe it or not, next week the aGSTC will announce its indoor track and field schedule.  It's that time of year...!

The Grand Return of
aGSTC Trivia
1.  Why did we send this letter to the USATF-NJ?
A.  There's nothing in it.  Joke on them.
B.  Henry Clay and his Whig Party envisioned a rapid modernization based on highly productive factories
C.  Bribery for some 70+ runners.  Easy team points.
D.  $300 application fee for the USATF-NJ Championship Circuit for College Ave Mile
E.  A signed action shot of Mike Anis clipping his nails shower-side wearing just his unmentionables.

2.  Who sat here, years ago, who Chuck visited three times to finally recruit onto the aGSTC in 2011?

A.  Charles Barkley
B.  Kenneth Goglas
C.  Will Alston
D.  Angela Dunn
E.  Henry Clay

3.  True or false:  Kyle Price is wearing a women's jacket here.

4.  Who's cousin did we randomly recruit last week at a book store?  Note: she was wearing a hoodie with a last name that we recognized, so it wasn't as creeper as it sounds.  Seriously.  Please believe us.

A.  Lara Shegoski
B.  Ana Garcia
C.  Erin Varga
D.  Henry Clay
E.  Dev Capko

1.  D.  this stuff ain't cheap!
2.  B, Kenneth.  Chuck recruited Ken from Randolph's Runner's Haven store before each of his three interviews with Randolph HS for their vice principal job.
3.  True.  Duh.
4.  Lara!  Her cousin Renee was rocking a Shegoski hoodie, so we just had to say hello.  She runs during study breaks, too!

TMA: Totally Misunderstood Award

We are tempted to give it to Rutgers Men's XC team for finishing dead last at the Big 10 Championships, but instead, we'll give it to the USATF and their unfortunate bidding process for national championship events.

We are all for an equitable, democratic bidding process that shares the responsibility of hosting major events.  We are also all for changing up the venue yearly, as this makes for a more exciting experience for the athletes.  However, what we do not support is a process that hurts the athletes and therefore hurts the sport.

Months ago, we pointed out how Seattle's Club Northwest hosted the 2014 national club track and field championship.  The problem, however, is that the club scene is very minimal in the Pacific Northwest--resulting in a lackluster participation in the event.

Similarly,  the masters 5k cross country championships was held in Carmel, Indiana this weekend.   A total of 190 runners competed, and they broke down like this: 57 40s men (7 teams), 45 50s men (6 teams), 39 60s men (2 teams), 17 70s men (2 teams), 1 80s (0 teams).   On the women's side, 14 40s women (4 teams), 8 50s women (2 teams), 6 60s women (2 teams), 3 70s women (1 team).

These numbers mean nothing unless you look at the same event the previous year, held by the USATF-NJ at Deer Path Park: 472 participants, or 2.5 times more than this year in Indiana.

As a comparison to the USATF-NJ Men's 10k championships on Sunday, there were 12 40s teams, 9 50s teams, 6 60s teams, and 2 70s teams.

We aren't saying Jersey is perfect, but if Indiana, or Seattle, doesn't have a strong club scene...don't host a national championship there.  Runners are smart and often frugal, so they aren't gonna spend money to travel for a weak, poorly attended event.

Kyle's Korner

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

This week on Kyle's Korner we caught up with Josh Neyhart. He was a phenom back in his college days and he is ever trying to improve upon the success he had then. Always working hard and pushing the envelope for himself, we talked about the road he's traveled to get to where he is now.

Neyhart competes last year in the 1500m at Princeton University.

Kyle: Hello Josh, thank you for joining us.

Mr. Neyhart: Kyle it's my absolute pleasure to be here.

Kyle: I'm all about pleasure in this email. Lets begin with a little history. How did you find yourself running in black and gold?

Mr. Neyhart: Moved here to NJ after a year away from the East Coast when I lived in Chicago. My running had devolved into terribleness and decided I needed organization. So I googled "does anyone in New Jersey run?" And got the Garden State Track Club site and emailed back and forth between Chuck and Goglas for a while before I finally decided I wasn't too crappy to come for a run. (Like 5 months).

Kyle: How long was your "after college time off"? You were a diesel D2 runner on quite an impressive program right?

Neyhart and Ricky Garcia won the two-man relay at the College Ave Mile earlier this year

Mr. Neyhart: After college I was sorta of on and off for about 2 years. Things finally got organized last fall. College was fun. I went to Shippensburg University coached by Olympian Steve Spence. It was a good time. My senior year the cross country team finished 7th in the nation, and won the conference title. It was fun. Then we drank beer.

Kyle: That is an extremely impressive notch on your hypothetical running belt. Maybe the buckle of the belt even. So how has your training this season been? I hear you kicked an impromptu marathons' butt.

Mr. Neyhart: Things have progressed nicely. I was happy with how the spring ended. It was my first consistent block of training since college. So that was cool. Then the early part of this fall was really challenging. I couldn't really find a good training groove. Running was very very unfun. Then things slowly clicked. It was a little scary going into a marathon so under trained. I only had two long runs over 15 and my highest mileage week was like 65 and it was only a few weeks before the race. Luckily I was able to dip into my shallow talent well and lean on advice from my college homies who have raced the 'thon, Goglas, and of course Dr. M. Anis Esq. who has a depth of marathoning knowledge that is vast and wonderful (similar to his beard). So I survived. And was pleased. As a mid distant runner anything over 5k is still a learning experience. And the marathon was a big learning experience. Imagine that horrible last 100m of an all out 800 but for 5 miles or so. Just terrible. But it's exciting to push your body to the edge and the NY crowds were amazing.

Kyle: That sounds like an incredible experience despite the difficulty. Do you think you'll find yourself in another one soon?

Mr. Neyhart: Not real soon. Want to work on some short longer races for the time being. Some 5k/10k stuff. That's still all new to me too. But I will do another marathon.

Kyle: How is your road to Lehigh shaping up?

Mr. Neyhart: Seems good so far. Unfortunately because of my early season struggles I'm a race short right now. But Ashenfelter should complete my team requirements. I feel almost completely recovered from the marathon just a week later so I'm ready to dig in for a few more solid weeks of training. And then beer!

Kyle: Bring out the Hamms!! Ashenfelter is going to be huge this year so I'm sure you'll be rolling in with all the top guys.

Mr. Neyhart: I would like to be up there with the guys. I'm not sure I'm quite up with our projected A-team but I'm happy with my fitness. I want people to witness my fitness. It's also nice to know Chuck has no chance at beating me at any running event right now. I'm pretty sure he's already picked a new target to ridicule, so that shows I've come a long way since last year.

Kyle: That it does ha. RANDOM QUESTION! What did you want to be when you grew up when you were a tiny Josh?

Mr. Neyhart: A truck driver. Was really dead set on that. But my parents being the dreams crushers they are said I should aim higher. Sucks to have your dreams crushed.

Kyle: Aim high you did! You work at an airport.

Mr. Neyhart: Indeed I do!

Kyle: Well that's all the time we have for this week. I look forward to witnessing your fitness come the end of the season.

Mr. Neyhart: Awesome. I look forward to another post club nationals evening of shenanigans with you!

Kyle: Yeeessss ha. Thank you my good man.

Mr. Neyhart: No problem.

Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Kyle Mahoney

Kyle Mahoney joins GSTC after competing at Ramapo College. He adds to an already deep group of NJAC talent currently on the club. Kyle's plan was to join after he  finished up running at Ramapo, but decided he couldn't wait. Ken "the ageless wonder" Goglas was his coach at Ramapo for two years and learned about the team through him. Over the summer he attended a few team long runs while I was getting ready for XC and had a really good time meeting the great group that GSTC has assembled. He knew from that moment that GSTC would be the next stop in his running career. If he is not running you can find him spending time with his dog or trying to conquer his fear of traveling. The furthest he has traveled is Wisconsin but he may need to get over his fear of traveling soon with XC nationals in San Francisco next year. He has many goals in life from hanging out with Aaron Rodgers, to winning the lottery and most importantly beating Ken Goglas in a race(good luck with that). He feels that a celebrity like Aaron Rodgers would like him and possibly add him to his discount double check fan club group on facebook.

Catching up with Anna Steinman

We Chat with Anna Days After her #2GSTC Marathon

1. Leading up to the race, what were your preparations like?  what was your mileage like?

Two weeks before the race my weekend long run was 16 miles with two days of workouts the rest of the week.  Tuesday I did 3x1 mi with 2 minutes rest and Thursday was 6 miles easy, immediately followed by 3x2 mi with 400 jog recovery (tempo paces).  That week was about 60 miles.  The last Sunday run was 90 minutes (12 miles) and a total of 38 miles that week until the marathon.  Tuesday was a small workout to keep my legs moving of 4x1 mi at tempo pace with 400 recovery jog.  The rest of the week was 20-30 minutes with some strides, with Thursday completely off.  I definitely felt very rested during the latter part of that week and really anxious to get my legs running long distances again.

2.  Explain and talk about your biggest fear going into the race.

The only "fear" I had going into the race was how unpredictable the weather forecast was.  I was constantly checking the 10-day forecast as soon as I could, and it kept changing from perfect conditions, to possible rain, then the cold temperatures with high winds that we all were dreading.  Aside from that unknown, the distance and the talks about how tough this course is with the hills, sharp turns, rough roads, and bridges weren't intimidating.  I tried to refrain from reading all the press from the professional athletes on their thoughts and experiences of the New York course, with windy conditions combined.  I knew I could just hide my short self behind people, hoping that would help me at least.

3.  You were accepted into the local competitive coral via the gstc.  how did that change your race plan, strategy, etc?

It was great being in the local competitive start, and I couldn't thank you all enough!  First off, it was awesome not having to wait on long lines for bathrooms, food, or water.  And it was great getting to go out to the start as one of the first groups.  Honestly, I was a little hesitant on starting way up front because I didn't want my adrenaline of that to take me out to a much faster start than planned.  But it definitely was a benefit to getting out there and starting relatively close and exactly at 9:40 with the first wave and first corrals.

4.  Take us through the race a bit.  how did you feel after the first 5k?  first half?  at 20 miles?  when did you really start to feel the pain?

The first 5k went by so quickly, and still my toes were numb, but the sun was warming me up pretty quickly.  The first couple miles on the Verrazano were the worst with the wind, but it didn't really matter that early into it.  Once I was all warmed up, after about 6 miles, the next bit seemed to go to quickly too.  The half came a couple miles before the Queensboro and I knew that was going to be a challenge, and I slowed down a little more than I would have liked on the upside of the bridge, but made up some time over the next 3 miles.  Miles 16-19 were awesome on First Ave because of all the people around, and I was still feeling pretty good.  Miles 19-21 were tougher because the wind was really coming at you hard and it was a lot more open in the Bronx portion.  I think mile 22 was one of my fastest miles along the whole run, but then it hit me miles 23-24, with that hill.  My hips starting to ache, but once I got up the hill, the rest was pretty rolling.  What got me through the last couple miles was the adrenaline from all the people cheering once you got into Central Park.  I started passing some people and before I knew it I had 800 meters left.  All the little aches I was feeling seemed to disappear and I got so excited and used everyone I saw in front of me to get me to the finish quickly.

5.  What would be one piece of advice you'd give someone thinking about running NYC next year?

Definitely do it!  The waiting around in the beginning goes by so fast, you don't even mind it.  The crowds of people all over the course are one of the best parts and it helps so much.  It really made the last few miles in Central Park go by so fast despite the hills.  And you get to be in every borough in the city in one day!  One of the best parts was going down the Queensboro Bridge towards First Ave in Manhattan and hearing all the crowds cheering, but not being able to see them yet, and then coming around the corner and there was tons of people screaming for everyone.

Don't listen to people saying that the course is very tough because all the people cheering for you take that challenging aspect away.  Do NYC and enjoy every aspect of the city and the atmosphere!

6.  How is recovery going now, afterward?

Well, going downstairs is rough!  Not so much anymore.  Taking some much needed time off and hoping some minor pain in my shin and foot will subside by the time nationals rolls around so I can get out there and race with you all!

7.  You have twelve items at Shop Rite.  The express line requires ten or under; the regular lines are longer than the express line.  What do you do?  We will not judge you, either way.  Promise.

Honestly, I would sneak into the express lines.  Oops.  Twelve can't be much more than 10, and hopefully they wouldn't mind.  Sorry everyone in Shop Rite in advance!
