(3/24-3/30): adidas GSTC Dominates 20k USATF-NJ Championships

NJ Marathon Baggage Update

On April 27, the adidas GSTC is once again in charge of handling the baggage for the 10,000 athletes of the NJM.  It’s a club fundraiser, yet we will pay for any team road race you’d like for your help.  There are about ten spots left; please contact Erika Meling ASAP at emeling816@gmail.com to grab one of these remaining few.

USATF-NJ 20k Team Championships:

adidas GSTC Racks Up 62 Points

Women Go 1-2; Ogletree 3-Peats

Piscataway- For the third year in a row, Cheyenne Ogletree was not only the top finisher for the adidas Garden State Track Club in the 20k USATF-NJ Championships, but she again became the 20k USATF-NJ Champion, again set the 20k USATF-NJ course record, and again set a 20k club record.

Now that’s consistency.

Rolling through the course at 6:05 a mile, Ogletree covered the distance in 75:28, almost two full minutes faster than her course and club record last year of 77:15.  Along with bringing in the $150 prize money, she helped lead her team to a 1-2 sweep of the top two team spots.

Greta Sieve was the second finisher for the Gold and the second women overall, hitting the tape at 77:27- making this the third fastest 20k ever run in a club uniform.  Katie Chaput (4th) and Erika Meling (5th) finished in 80:12 and 82:06 respectively, as the ladies put 4 in the top 5, 8 in the top 12, and 11 in the top 21.  Meling’s time was 2:30 faster than her performance last year.  Sieve and Chaput ran, respectively, the 2nd and 3rd fastest times in club history.

Indeed, it’s been a tough winter to train, but that didn’t stop the ladies from making it happen on the three-loop course at Johnson Park yesterday.

Karen Auteri (1:23:40), Angela Dunn (1:24:54), Stephanie Donatone (1:29:58), and Kelly Thow teamed up with Ogletree for the winning team that averaged 1:21:17 for its top five.

The adidas GSTC ladies extended their Grand Prix win streak to thirteen straight wins.

The second place team, led by Sieve, featured two newcomers making their debut: Victoria Pontecorvo (1:24:33) and Keri Brown (1:28:58).   South Star Brittany McCann (1:25:39), Erin Blum (1:30:05), and Deb Capko (1:40:01) rounded out the team that averaged 1:25:21 for its scoring five.

To contextualize this success, the Ladies in Gold averaged 1:26:09 for its lone silver medal in 2012; only four were needed for a scoring team two years ago.

Masters Men Rack Up 10 points

In 2012, the adidas GSTC didn’t have any masters teams.  Last year, the men’s 40s team squeaked out a 7th place at the 20k team race, and there wasn’t a scoring 50s team.

Finally, in 2014, the G-State men’s masters group is finally coming around.

With Matt Baker making his captain debut, both the 40s team and 50s team snagged 6th place, adding a valuable ten points to the overall team score after the first team championship.

Andrew Tschesnok was the 40's top finisher in 76:31, as he averaged 6:10 pace for the 12.4 mile course.  Baker was next in 1:25:28, followed by a finally-healthy Kenny Huryk (1:28:24), Brian Harris (1:31:20), Lee Mooney (1:32:06), Peter Auteri (1:33:55), Franklin Reed (1:33:45), and Francis Beideman (1:42:24).

For the 50's team, Baker, Harris, Mooney, Auteri, and Reed were the scoring 5, finishing just 98 seconds out of 4th place.

Open Men Go 1-3-4-8; Fonder Gets CR

Clipping off 5:15 miles, Princeton Enclave co-captain Mike Fonder dominated the USATF-NJ 20k race, running alone the final seven miles en route to a course record and adidas GSTC #2 time of 65:04.  In his wake were eight other teammates in the top eleven finishers, resulting in yet another big team performance for the black and gold.

The win was the men’s twenty-second straight Grand Prix victory, dating back to September of 2011.  Fonder’s race was second only to  club compatriot Jeff Perrella, who scorched the New Haven 20k in August of 2012 in 64:34.

Teaming up with Fonder to take gold with a 70:06 average was Peter Bolgert (7th/70:14), William Appman (9th/70:42), Chuck Schneekloth (10th/71:12), and Adam Gruchacz (19th/73:16).

It’s always hard to know fitness levels in the season opener, and this prevented the men from sweeping the top three spots.  Regardless, the third place team consisted of Ken Goglas (5th/68:07), Josh Neyhart (7th/70:04), David Fett (11th/71:23), Joe Zeoli (26th/75:42), and Tom Visicaro (1:22:42).

The fourth place team of Atilla Sabahoglu (3rd/66:44), Kyle Price (6th/69:34), Matt Eder (15th/72:07), Adin Mickle (46th/79:24), and Tim Paziora (81:52).

Picking up one team point for 8th place was Tschesnok, TJ Zablocki (47th/79:37), Keith Gruchacz (48th/79:50), Mark Miniverni (83:50), Huryk (88:24), and Ezra Chefitz (90:40).  Woody Kongsamut (82:51), Charles Groll (1:54:53) and Charles Hood (1:53:09) were the 6th men on the A, B, and C teams.

Brouhaha Scores:  Princeton Enclave Takes Crown

We’ve seen this one before.

Just like the fall of 2013, the Princeton Enclave, self-nicknamed “The Original Brouhaha Champions,” have won the first inner-enclave contest of 2014.  The question that lingers: can they stay on the top.  Thanks to Fonder’s first place finish among all GSTC men, Sieve’s second place finish among all GSTC women, and Baker’s 2nd place finish among all GSTC masters, the PE ran away with the title with five total points (1+2+2).  Last year, after running away with the brouhaha's first contest at Belmar Chase, they crumbled like an hour-long game of Jenga, succumbing to their all-powerful neighboring enclave slightly to their north.

The Central Enclave, the defending 2013 Brouhaha Champs, were second by a point, followed by the North (16), Jersey City (24), South (25), and Morristown 32).  The Beach Enclave sadly was an incomplete, and South Enclave co-captains didn’t return phone calls with regard to the south’s sluggish start.

This year, top finishers among the team will be considered in three categories: open men, open women, and masters.

adidas GSTC Meets With Vietname Officials

Highland Park- Monday night, four club officials met with three delegates of the Vietnamese National Team to discuss a collaboration from April 15 – September 15.  The adidas GSTC is one of three clubs they have selected to make a proposal to coach five of their athletes leading up to the Asian Games starting on September 20th.

This proposal, including a description of coaching services, facilities, and five month total budget, will be presented to the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Vietnam by Douong Duc Thuy, PhD, the Chief of the Athletics Division of the Sports Elitte Department next week.

The athletes, all women, include four 400m/400IH sprinters and a triple jumper.  Two of them have run 52 and the others have run 53 for 400m; the triple jumper has a PR of 46 feet.  Handpicked by their government at an early age, these athletes have been fully committed to athletics their entire life, and thus have never received much schooling.  They speak very limited English, requiring a team manager/translator during this potential American training experience.

The club will learn of its proposal status within a week of its submission.

Quotes of the Week

“@GardenStateTC 8 miles.  To round out a 95 mile week.”  -Greta Sieve, via Twitter, responding to a GSTC tweat about weekly mileage

“Just a good feeling to run faster at 44 than you did at 18.”  -masters phenom, truly, Michelle Brangan on FB after her 18:35 last weekend.  Wow.

“Saturday, March 22, 11am, at the YMCA, Adam Goucher and Tim Catalano.  Speaking.  Two of my top masters recruits.”  -masters captain Matt Baker via FB.  A bit ambitious, but hey…why not.

“After that intense track workout and lifting legs I think I may need a wheel chair tomorrow.”  -Half miler Jaris Rousseau, via FB

“Ayanna, be careful of getting involved.  I have tons of experience.  If you do a good job, you’ll be asked to do more work.  If you do a bad job, you’ll get yelled at.”  -sprint captain Mark Parisen joking with Ayanna Keller about getting involved with doing GSTC work.  Indeed, it can be quite the black hole.

GSTC TRIVIA

True or false?

TMA:  Totally Misunderstood Award

This week, much thanks to the heavy lobbying of Josh Neyhart, Kyle Price receives his first 2014 nomination.  First, when submitting a uniform design for the adidas uniform selection, he designed and submitteda sports bra.  Next, he missed a Tuesday workout because, well, something about his friend driving but then not having a license and not having a way to get home on the side of the road?  Finally, he rolled up to Sunday's 9:00am 20k team championship at.8:45am.  Something about not having kets to his car?  We don't know, but it's all officially in the books.

Gold Star

By Ashwin Anantharaman

Duane Reed

Duane joined this year as Matt Baker invited me to join. He wanted to join because of the opportunity to expand his racing and training.

His  Biggest goal this year is to complete a 100 miler under 30 hours with stretch goal of under 24hr.  His PRs include, 5k 19:02; 10k 39:16; 1/2 marathon 1:29; marathon 3:16; 50 mile 9:06; 100k 15:32. Before a race he eats, does a light stretch/jog and tries to do his runs with the same approach as race day. Outside of running he is into Mixed Martial Arts, Reading, and golf.

Charlie Hood

Charlie joined GSTC a month ago to get back into shape and train to run his 1st marathon. He found out about GSTC at the Newport Liberty Half Marathon where he saw dozens of yellow jerseys running the race and was definitely impressed at the quality of their performances. Pre race routines are pretty simple for him, just a light warm up while listening to Metallica or other rock/metal music. HIs goals are to finish his 1st marathon in under 4 hours,  get his half marathon time under 1:40:00 and his 5K time under 19:00. His PRs for 5K - 18:48, Half Marathon - 1:51:30. Outside of running he am an avid sports photographer, NJ Devils hockey fan, and also hockey player. He plays on 4 ice hockey teams and also coach a girls ice hockey team as well. It keeps him busy every night of

 the week.

This Week in Training

By Chris Tafelski (cjtafelski@yahoo.com)

Recovery is the name of the game this week.  There will be one quality session this week, and it's designed for you to be able to take it on feel depending on how you're feeling.  Things like pace, mileage, etc this week are NOT IMPORTANT.  The faster you recover from the race, the sooner you can return to high quality training.  Soreness is expected.

Monday - Recovery runs. Take it nice and light!

Tuesday - Another recovery day!  Finish with some light strides if you're up for it.

Wednesday - medium day, but take it light - usually we go about 75% of long run duration - go about 60% instead.

Thursday - Super easy 40-60 mins + strides

Friday - fartlek run - take it on feel!  You want a quality aerobic effort.  The best way to do this is to keep the recovery intervals honest between reps.  The duration, number of cycles, and work:recovery ratio are all up to you.

Saturday - comfortable run + 10x8-10s hill sprints

Sunday - long run!
