(3/17-3/23): DuBois Runs GSTC #3 5k; 20k Lineups Announced!

THE DEFENSE BEGINS

Black and Gold Open Up Grand Prix Sunday

Piscataway- Thanks to a late-season rally, the adidas GSTC not only won its first USATF-NJ Overall Grand Prix team title in 2013, it also set the association record for most points scored in one season.

Months later, it’s 2014, and…the defense begins.

Women's Preview: Ladies Stack Two Teams

Cheyenne Ogletree, the two-time defending 20k champ, looks to three-peat at the Johnson Park course and bring home the $150 gold medal purse.  Coming off the anchoring of a third place Distance Medley Relay at Millrose Games, the GSTC stalwart is in great shape and may run her fastest time ever over the distance.  Nipping at her heels will most certainly be Greta Sieve, the Minnesota native who has finished second to Ogletree several times in 2013, had a strong fall and has packed in big training weeks despite the challenging training conditions.

Look for teammates Katie Chaput, Chelsea Callan, Erika Meling, Karen Auteri, Angela Dunn, and Brittany McCann to make strong bids at top-ten finishes.

This race will mark the debut of three outstanding athletes: Victoria Pontecorvo, Kelly Thow, and Keri Brown.  Pontecorvo and Brown, both sub-5:00 milers, are on the opposite ends of the training spectrum, currently.  The former is recovering from the flu; the latter is building up for the Boston Marathon.  Thow, a former standout at Franklin High School who recently transferred from Stockton State to Rutgers, has a year of college running under her belt and is very fit.  All three will make a huge impact on Sunday, although all three are debuting at the 20k distance.

Masters captain Prudence Jones will bring a masters team of Deb Capko, Joanne Coffee, and herself to the starting line.

GOLD TEAM

Cheyenne Ogletree, Chelsea Callan, Angela Dunn, Erika Meling, Karen Auteri, Stephanie Donatone, Prudence Jones

BLACK TEAM

Greta Sieve, Katie Chaput, Victoria Pontecorvo, Brittany McCann, Kelly Thow, Keri Brown, Deb Capko

MASTERS

Joe Anne Coffee, Prudence Jones, Deb Capko

Men’s Preview: Croff Leads the Gold Phalanx

Chris Croff, in the heavy weeks of marathon training, is very fit and a favorite to run away with the 20k USATF-NJ Title.  Although nursing minor knee pain from an old college injury, the Southern Connecticut College standout routinely has been knocking out 14-18 mile long runs averaging 6:00 pace.  He won the USATF-NJ Half Marathon Title in September and has logged numerous 100 mile weeks over the past few months.

Defending champ Ken Goglas, the 2013 USATF-NJ Grand Prix Champion, is also very fit and will certainly challenge Croff for the individual gold medal.  Mike Fonder, coming off ten straight weeks of 100 miles each, will also be up front looking for a podium, prize-money-paying spot.

Mike Anis, Atilla Sabahoglu, Josh Neyhart, Will Appman, Kyle Price, and Matt Eder all figure to be in the top ten, hopefully clinching a 1-2-3-4 team finish for the Gold.

G-State will also field two full 40s and 50s masters teams, lead by Andrew Tschesnok and Matt Baker.

GOLD TEAM

Chris Croff, Kyle Price, Matt Eder, Ashwin Anantharaman, Timmy Terrific , Adin Mickle, Andrew Tschesnok

Quotes of the Week

“A year ago I was aiming to go under 21:00 min in a 5k.  Today I almost went under 19 min.  Couldn’t be making this great ‘comeback’ without my great training buddies.”  -Brittany McCann, via FB, to her South Enclave teammates

“I was planning to get there around 7:30 as well. I'm pretty unreliable and generally late though, so worst case I'll see everyone after the race so we can coordinate a cool down.”  -Paul Matuszak, prior to the Haddonfield 5k via FB, keeping it real with his South Jersey teammates.

Instead of going to bars for St Pattys, we run 4 by mile and 30 minute tempos on a track.. we are a rather special bunch.”  -Kristen Prazenica, via FB, during thread under thumbs-up group selfie picture.

“There’s this episode of Spongebob where Spongebob and Patrick have a chocolate bar…”  -Woody Kongsamut, during brunch after the team Sunday long run.  No context is really needed here.

“Your hair isn’t that special.”  -Tim Morgan, during brunch after the team long run, commenting on Woody’s statement that he trains into New York City to get his hair cut.

“Things are coming together!  15 mile long run with 6 miles averaging around 5:45 at the end.”  -Chris Warren, new adidas GSTC member, after last weekend’s LR

“Hey guys!!  Before you all head home or go on vacation, why not come out to the track tomorrow?  You have all week to sleep in/party/study soo….no excuses!  It’s also supposed to be sunny and warm!”  -Erin LaCosta, posting on the GSTC/ Rutgers Running Club FB page.

“Great track workout complete, now I can start my day.”  -Jaris Rousseau, via FB, after Saturday’s track session.

“2:14 (half marathon).   Puts me on pace to become most improved runner at banquet.”  -Jonathan Campanaro, via FB message, after his NYC Half.

“Why is the church at the end of my road continually the most dangerous part of my run?  How many Hail Mary’s for vehicular homicides?  Thou shall look both ways when exiting the parking lot.”  -Keith Gruchacz, via FB

GSTC TRIVIA

One of the above Quotes of the Week commits one of the most common mistakes in written English, the comma splice.  Who is the guilty party?

Gold Star

By Ashwin Anantharaman

Chris Warren

Chris plans to  join in time to race under the GSTC colors at the start of the outdoor season. He was approached by Chuck at the Monmouth Open Indoor meet and just couldn't resist looking into the program. His long term goals involve him qualifying and going to USATF Nationals within the next year or 2. He is a long distance runner training primarily for the 5k. His goal for the season is to break 14:30. Last spring he graduated from the University of Delaware where he ran 14:49 to close out the season. He has Prs of 4:19 in the mile and 8:30 in the 3k. He is a stickler when it comes to doing the same thing every meet. This includes pasta dinner the night before, 8 hours of sleep at the minimum, bagel with butter 3-4 hours before the race and a powerbar with some water 2 hours before. Outside of running he enjoys playing frisbee gold with his friends and coaching high school track.

Raymond Campbell Jr.

Ray decided to join GSTC because he has always wanted to continue running competitively after high school. He has been looking for a way to do that for years. He looked at other clubs but found it difficult to find one in his area that didn't only concentrate on distance races until he found Garden State Track Club. His main race in high school was a 400 meter run. He also ran the 200 and would run the 4 by 100 relay team. His PR in the 200 was 22.5 back in 2004. His Pr in the 400 was a 49.42 the same year. His goal is to beat these PRs. When he was competing he used to run with the distance team to train for sprints as it helped his stamina. Before a race he usually would run a 1/2 mile to warmup. He also listens to music to clear his head. Outside of running he plays soccer as for the past year he has been playing in an indoor/outdoor league called Playmore SJ based in Medford NJ. He also is studying for certifications to advance his career in Information Technology as he spends time fixing phones and laptops.

This Week in Training

By Chris Tafelski (cjtafelski@yahoo.com)

First championship event is this Sunday!  We're gonna roll back on the intensity going into the race so we can start the competitive year with a bang.

Monday - comfortable run + 10x8-10sec hill sprints

Tuesday - 3M at 1/2M pace, take 2 mins rest, then go 2xmile at 10k pace with 2:00 rest, then go 2x800 at 5k pace with 2:00 rest.

Wednesday - same as Monday, but go 10x strides instead of the hill sprints

Thursday - 12x400 at 5k pace on a 2:00 cycle.  If your 400s take 75-90 seconds, go on a 2:30 cycle.  If they take between 90-105 seconds, go on a 3:00 cycle.

Friday - same as Wednesday.

Saturday - shakeout day.

Sunday - RACE!

What is this email?

The GSTC Weekly Email is a collaborative effort to bring club membership an accurate and entertaining update on all team events, runs, results, workouts, quotes, and even mishaps every Sunday night.  It is also often referred to as “The Email” or, by more prominent members of the running community, “error-fraught spam.”  If you’d like to submit anything that would contribute to any of these sections, please email us!

TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer- Jaris.  As explained by “Grammar Girl,” two independent clauses cannot be joined with just a comma.  A semi-colon works, and a comma + conjunction works, but not just a comma.  The fleet-footed half miler entering his third year on the club is gonna have to step up his game soon, as even PE teachers write lesson plans…we think.
