Kyle's Kingdom
by Kyle Price

 Ryan DeGregorio

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

This week on the Korner we spoke with Ryan DeGregorio. He's a bit green to the club, but he is definitely 100% in with the black and gold. He has shown some heavy dedication to his training since joining and it's paying off for him. But don't think that'll give him cause to settle, he still has some out of this world plans for his running.
Kyle:  Hello Ryan. Thank you for joining us.

Mr. DeGregorio: Thank you Kyle, pleasure to be here.

Kyle: Ah the pleasure is all mine, you're my first request. Only took THIRTY SIX of these to get one. How long have you been a black and gold soldier?

Mr. DeGregorio: A little over a year and a half.

Kyle: How has the experience been so far?

Mr. DeGregorio: It truly has been remarkable. Everyone that I've met has positively impacted my running career, from all the motivation and encouragement they've given me. I made numerous friends since the fall of 2013 and everyday gets better and better.

Kyle: That's what we love to hear! What has been your biggest achievement over these last 18 months?

Mr. DeGregorio: I guess it would have to be my 800m race at Ramapo College which was very recent. I set a five second PR with a 2:05.20 and won my heat.

Kyle: Epiiiic. When did you start your running career?

Mr. DeGregorio: Well it started a little strangely. In middle school I ran cross country. But when I got to high school, I ran xc freshman year, stopped running, then started up again with indoor track junior year, and finished my last year with xc and indoor. I've been running ever since then.

Kyle: Why all the season jumping?

Mr. DeGregorio: I honestly wasn't very good and I didn't think I could make the commitments to be on the school team, but my reassuring friends urged me to stick with it!

Kyle: Well the on-again off-again sure didn't work for Justin and Selena but clearly you have better friends because you've found success!

Mr. DeGregorio: Lol yes indeed!

Kyle: What are you trying to do with the rest of your season?

Mr. DeGregorio: I have a few more races to run and I really just want to run smart and efficiently. A great race is when you leave nothing to chance, and you're fully focused from start to finish. Probably biggest goal this spring is to hit a 4:45 mile.

Kyle: I would say that's certainly attainable after your 2:05 half-mile performance.

Did you not plan on running in college until you found out about the club? Or were you on the hunt straight out of high school?

Mr. DeGregorio: The day I got to Rutgers, I began the search for a group of people to run with. I started running with the Rutgers Running Club (which had just been created) right away. Then Chuck showed up one day and asked if I wanted to join GSTC. I immediately told him I was interested.

Kyle: Yes chuck does have that effect on people. Speaking of Rutgers what are majoring in?

Mr. DeGregorio: Astrophysics.

Kyle: Whoa. Intense. How's that going?

Mr. DeGregorio: It's a lot of fun. There are endless things to learn about. I'm looking forward to hopefully doing research projects with some of my professors in the future.

Kyle: I'm a big space fan. You should talk to Peter Bolgert about astrophysics things. He does that.

Mr. DeGregorio: Interesting! I'll have to do that.

Kyle: Well since you're a space cadet like me, if given the chance would you participate in the first ever track meet on Mars?

Mr. DeGregorio: Yeah I would definitely be down for that...as long as we don't succumb to the frigid temperatures and lack of oxygen.

Kyle: Naah I'm imagining the first-ever interstellar Track Bubble. I'm assuming the lower gravity will be more of a hindrance though.

Mr. DeGregorio: Now you're talking. Lol. Perhaps. It would be insanely fun.

Kyle: Glad I've got someone on my twisted wavelength. One last question. Will we be seeing you at XC nationals this fall?

Mr. DeGregorio: Oh man, I hope so! That is certainly one of the huge goals I have this year. As long as I keep grinding through the summer and give 100% at every workout, I should be there.

Kyle: Yeeessss. That's the determination we love. Well I hope to see you in San Fran. Thank you for speaking with us.

Mr. DeGregorio: Of course man!

Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Day-by-Day Report

THURSDAY

Warren Breaks Club 10k Record
One of the oldest club records on the books is Hall of Famer Jeff Perrella's track 10k record.  Set on May 28, 2011 at the USATF East Region Track and Field Championships, Perella sizzled the track in 31:02.80.  The closest anyone has come since that performance was Mike Fonder's 31:53.03 at the 2013 USATF Club National Championships.

Despite cold winds and a 10:55pm start, Chris Warren finished 5th in the Olympic Development 10k at Penn Relays, hitting the tape in 30:42.78.  Lowering the club record by 19 seconds, the scrappy University of Delaware alum now has both the 5k and 10k track club records.

An hour earlier, Josh Neyhart set a new personal best in the 5k, as he finished 16th of 38 in the 5,000m Olympic Development race in 14:51.54.

Steepler Kyle Price was with the leaders with 600m to go, but he landed funny off the second-to-last water barrier and was forced to stop.

FRIDAY
Men Roll to SB in 4x100

The weather wasn't ideal, but the foursome of Ish Robbins, Derrhyl Duncan, Herman Kirkland, and Cyrus Wesley rolled to a season best of 41.75.  They were 5th out of 25 teams.  The club record is 40.83 set last year at Swarthmore's Last Chance Meet.

The B Team ran very well, and had third leg Chris Turner not pulled up, they would have run under 44 seconds.  George Erazo, Da'Ron Jones, and Kevin Persson finished 19th out of 25 teams.

Women Finish 4th in 4x1, 4x4

It was the first time a women's relay has graced the Penn Relays track, and it was solid meet debut.

Bianca Marten, Shene Davis, Alica Ross, and Antoinette Padilla had yet another consistent relay finish, as they were 4th in 47.50.  Their season best, and club record, is 47.42.

Alyssa Douma, Ally Black, Robin Evangelist, and Nicole Salge teamed up for the 4x400, also the first time in club history to have a women's 4x400.

Ross Anchors 4x4 to Best OD Finish

As the Olympic Development mile relays waited for an hour in the paddock, it just got windier and colder.  It was 7pm, and the sun was setting fast; this was, by no means, not an ideal day for sprinters.

USA qualifier Logan Sharpe got boxed in and bumped around in the opening leg, splitting just a 49.97, but newcomer Will Taylor rolled a 48.58 to push them from the pack to third place.  Derrhyl Duncan, alone in no man's land, ran his third leg in 50.76.  From there, Tyrone Ross got to work, going out hard in his opening 200m.  While he made up no ground on the Executives Track Club, he did smell blood in the water, as their anchor began tying up with 100m to go.  On the final straightaway, Ross (48.36) cruised past a struggling Dejan Wilkenson (51.59), crossing the finish in second--the best finish ever for the club in the 4x400 Olympic Development event.  They also defeated DC International, avenging a 4x200 loss by .01 at the Millrose Games in February.

The 4x400 b team finished a respectable 8th of 14 teams with a 3:27.40.  George Erazo (52.44), Ish Robbins (51.05), Mark Parisen (51.75), and Pierre Checo (52.18) all ran slower splits then they have this spring, primarily due to the strong wind and cold weather.

SATURDAY
Women Make Club History in 15k

For the first time in club history, the women outscored the men in a USATF-NJ Grand Prix Championship race.  The women finished 1-2-5, whereas the men finished 1-2-6, making this a club milestone event.

Leading the charge, in her debut with the club, was Corinne Fitzgerald (left).  Running the #2 aGSTC time in club history, the East Stroudsburg alum averaged 6:08 miles to win in 57:09.  Just behind her was Cheyenne Ogletree, the club record holder in the 15k, who ran 57:51 for second overall.  Nicola Hallenborg, a Michigan alum also in her debut, ran an outstanding race to finish 3rd in 59:01.

Overall, the WIB put seven in the top ten.  Others included Aimee Chegwidden
(4th, 60:33), 48 year old master Martha Grinnell (5th, 61:14), Karen Auteri (9th, 62:59), and Jessica Penaherrera (10th, 63:11).

Fitzgerald, Grinnell, Katie Castroagudin, Aya Leitz, and Sarah Hersey teamed up to win the team title in 5:15:18.  In second place, Ogletree, Hallenborg, Auteri, Leah Roberts (68:15), and Lisa Rumer (69:03) combined for a team time of 5:17:12.

Chegwidden was the top finisher for the 5th place team, as Penaherrera, Carrie Merritt, Jenny Poherence, Allyson Guieb, Stephanie Edwards, and Diana Stavrou filled out the rest of the team.

Men Go 1, 2, 6 in 15k USATF-NJ Champs
For the first time in club history, the open men were outperformed by the club's open women--despite a solid 1-2-6 team showing at the Clinton Country Run 15k Team Championships.  Just like the women, the men put seven in the race's top ten.

In his first race wearing the black and gold, California transplant Frank Corrigan (far left) ran the second fastest 15k in club history, as the 30 year old cruised to a 49:23 second place finish.  Steve Mennitt was third overall (50:14), while Atilla Sabahoglu (4th, 50:15), Ken Goglas (5th, 50:46), Ted Doyle (7th, 51:43), Joe Zeoli (8th, 52:12), and Rob Nihen (10th, 52:55) rounded out the club's top ten finishers.

The winning team consisted of Sabhoglu, Goglas, Doyle, Zeoli, and Nihen finished with a total team time of 4:17:41, averaging 51:32 a man.  The second place team consisted of Corrigan, Mennitt, Peter Bolgert
(55:29), Ashwin Anantharaman (55:34), and Mark Minervini (58:05).

The sixth place team was Chuck Schneekloth, Joe Jacobs, Yuki Negoro, Kenneth Huryk, and Brian Harris.

Masters Women Win 40s

After finishing 3rd in the USATF National Club XC Championships in December, the masters 40s ladies won their first USATF-NJ title of 2015.

Martha Grinnellran a fabulous race, finishing as the first masters runner and fifth overall woman with an impressive 61:14 performance--6:34 pace for 9.3 miles.  Next in was Sarah Hersey (left), whose 77:26 was the third fastest of all 40s women.  Lisa Rumer came in at 69:03 to close out the scoring team, as Prudence Jones (1:46:23) was the fourth finisher for the team.

Jenny Poherence
(76:43) was the first finisher for the second team that placed 9th overall.  Her teammates included Erin Varga (80:03), Jennifer Dos Santos (80:35), and Stephanie Edwards (87:42).

Van Langen Helps Masters Men to 4th

In easily his finest race in the black and gold, Nick Van Langen (left) was the top finisher for the men's 40s masters team at the 15k.  The 48 year old finished in 58:27, or 6:16 pace, to place 34th overall.  The #2 man was Yuki Negoro, who
incredibly finished the Boston Marathon last weekend, in 63:43.  From there, teammates Ken Huryk
(64:56), Karl Leitz (65:20), Brian Harris (65:26), Don Weise (67:10), Jatin Meghani (82:31), and John Bergacs (92:45) filled out the scoring group.

Kirkland Defends Penn Relay LJ Title

For the second year in a row, Herman Kirkland
was crowned the Penn Relays Olympic Development Long Jump Champion.  The Philly native leaped 24-8.5 to edge out Dejon Wilkenson for the gold medal.  Third place finisher Carlton Lavong, an Adams State product and also Philly native, owns a PR of 26-6 and has since joined the aGSTC this week.  Above, he is pictured with LJ Champion Jessie Gaines.

Epps Wins First Penn Relay Title
Christina Epps continues to be a league of her own this spring, as she won her first Penn Relay Olympic Development triple jump by over two feet Saturday afternoon.  Her winning jump of 44-2.5 bested the silver medal effort of 42-0.75.

Teammates Shene Davis and Micah Leonard had great performances as well.  The former finished 3rd overall with a mark of 40-7.5, while the latter grabbed 5th with a 38-10.25 leap.

Gaines Wins Penn Relay LJ Title

It's been a great year for jumper/hurdler Jessie Gaines (second to the right)--and it keeps getting better.  The LIU alum and current FDU jumps coach popped a 21-5.25 jump on her sixth and final attempt to win the prestigious Penn Relay Olympic Development Long Jump Title.  Teammate Bianca Marten whose season best would have had her finish second, settled for 5th with a best mark of 19-1.25.

Wesley, Van Leeuwen Win at Lion Invite
Cyrus Wesley continued his hot streak in the 100m this spring, as he coasted to a 10.64 win.   He later came back to run 22.24 in the 200m, finishing third in that event.

Craig Van Leeuwen bounced back from a tough Princeton meet, winning the pole vault at 4.95m

Numerous middle distance runners landed PRs, including Mark Parisen (1:55.59), Josiah Park (2:02.87), and Edsel Flores (2:02.62).  Maneek Kumar, after taking four years off from competitive racing, returned to the oval with an impressive 2:01.97 clocking.

Fourth place Meet of Champions finisher Thomas Bailey made his debut with the club, running 51.79 and 11.57 in the 400m and 100m, respectively.

All Lion Invitational results can be found here.

Vassell Leads Women at Lion Invite
Rocky Vassell, a USA qualifier in the 60 high hurdles, continued her unbeaten streak in a aGSTC uniform.  She blitzed the 100 highs in 14.06, distancing herself by a half second over Indiana Tech's Andrea Ford.

Antoinette Padilla had a strong day in the sprints, as she finished fourth in the 100m (12.48) and fifth in the 200m (26.11).  Teammate Alica Ross finished 10th in the 200m in 26.33.

Courtney Macaluso, currently competing for Caldwell but is a aGSTC member, was 2nd in the 100m (12.32) and eighth in the 200 (26.18).

In the middle distances, Erin LaCosta ran a two-second 800m PR (2:20.82), with teammates Alyssa Douma (2:19.87) ahead of her and Robyn Evangelist (2:24.28) behind her.  In the 1500 earlier, Chelsea Callan ran a season best (4:49.00), with teammates Evangelist (4:52.20) and Ally Black (4:54.94) just behind her.  They came back to grab third in the 4x400 relay.

Kelsey Lewis (1.62m) grabbed sixth in the high jump.

Leitz PRs in NYC

Aya Leitz PR'ed on Sunday, running 26:37 (6:39/mile) at Run as One 4 Miler in Central Park! This was her 3rd race in 6 days.  Her husband, Karl, ran 26:54 and earned another race towards his 9+1 for NYC Marathon.

Sharpe PRs in aGSTC #2 800m
Two days after leading off the aGSTC's best 4x400 performance at Penn Relays, Logan Sharpe ran the second fastest 800m ever by a aGSTC athlete.  The gutsy SCSU alum went through the 400 at 53, then the 600m in 1:19, coming home in 1:50.96, once again leading and winning wire-to-wire.  Jared Hanko owns the 800m club record, just a

  Jones Wins in AC
Lisa Jones did something many fail to do, despite many, many tries: winning in Atlantic City.  She ran 19:55 to win the Seashore Gardens 5k down in AC on Sunday morning.

aGSTC'ers at the NJ Marathon

Numerous aGSTC'ers particpated in the NJ Marathon, the state'slargest running event.  Brendon Conway

And, a special shout out to Terry Mullane, the acting USATF-NJ Director, who finished it in 1:50:29!

Peter's Puzzler
You're in a dungeon with two doors.  One leads to escape, the other to execution.  There are only two other people in the room, one of whom always tells the truth, while the other always lies.  You don't know which is which, but they know that the other always lies or tells the truth.  You can ask one of them one question, but, of course, you don't know whether you'll be speaking to the truth-teller or the liar.  So what single question can you ask one of them that will enable you to figure out which door is which and make your escape?
The first person to e-mail me the correct answer at peterspuzzler@gmail.com will receive a free GSTC magnet!  The answer will be in next week's e-mail.  If you've seen this riddle before and know the answer, please don't participate!  That's lame.

If the two people know which door is which, why are they still in the room?

Kyle's Korner
by Kyle Price

 Kenny Huryk

Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly.

We aren't over our Master's theme just yet here at the Korner. This week we spoke with Ken Huryk who has been with the club a few years now. He has added many longer races to his portfolio with support from the team and there's a good chance you'll see him at all of our Grand Prix season road and XC races as long as he is available to run them. He started his XC running back in high school and kept it going well enough to motivate his eldest son into joining in with him. They even race together!

Kyle: Hello Ken, thanks for joining us!

Mr. Huryk: Great to here. Are you gonna make me famous.

Kyle: I can't promise fame, but I'll do my best to keep you from being infamous. Let's start with how you became a Garden State runner.

Mr. Huryk: Back in 2011, I met Mike Anis at the Run store and he told me about the Get The Gorilla race. Garden State Track Club was the sponsor and it seemed like a great club to run for so I joined.

Kyle: Aah I haven't had the pleasure of running that race since we cut it from the schedule, but I hear only good things. How has your training with the club been these 4 years?

Mr. Huryk: Training has been going well. When I first joined the club my longest race was a 10K. With the support of the team I've run 1/2 marathons 20 &15Ks.

Kyle: That's great! I take it the training company is a big motivator?

Mr. Huryk: I haven't run as many team training runs as I would like but just wanting to perform for the team is a big motivator for me.

Kyle: You also have a son who is pretty big into running as we've seen from Road Relays. Who motivates who there?

Mr. Huryk: The Road Relays is one of my favorite races. I think we kind of push each other in this race. We were both healthy this year and we ended up with the Father/son course record.

Kyle: Quite the pair you make. We're also a runner in high school?

Mr. Huryk: I ran for Hoffman High School back in the 80s now its called South Amboy HS. A small school that only had a XC team. I put up some pretty good numbers while I was there.

Kyle: Ooo history lesson! Well they have track now despite not having a track themselves.

Mr. Huryk: The school has come a long way. Didn't they ask Coach D for some help putting a track team together.

Kyle: That's a good possibility. Spotswood is a friendly program. Chuck sings its praises to Salge and I often. So what's your next big race?

Mr. Huryk: If all works out the Clinton Country 15K on the 25th.

Kyle: I'm not familiar with that one. I still have nightmares of when it was the Indian Hills 15k on those horrible hills.

Mr. Huryk: I've run Indian Hills and I'm glad they took that race off the schedule. That's one of the toughest courses I've run.

Kyle: The course with a downhill that's worse than the ups. Have you tried any track races or are primarily road and XC?

Mr. Huryk: I've never raced on the track. Maybe in the future. With the exception of the 2 XC races we have I stick to the roads.

Kyle: Any consideration for a full marathon?

Mr. Huryk: I have thought about it but for right now it's just a thought. I don't have any plans in the near future of running one.

Kyle: I have to agree with you on that one. I'm in no rush to do that event.

Mr. Huryk: Maybe some day.

Kyle: Yes, maybe ha. RANDOM QUESTION! If you could do any other sport as well as your running what would it be?

Mr. Huryk: Baseball. I was pretty good when I was younger but never played past Babe Ruth League.

Kyle: I graduated from tee ball to minor leagues but decided running was my thing when I only played outfield and hit in the park home runs.

Mr. Huryk: Sounds like you were even fast when you were a kid.

Kyle: At least faster than my baseball friends ha. Well thank you for speaking with us! And good luck at the 15k!

Mr. Huryk: Thanks it was great talking with you.

Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!

Weekend Results

Gaines Wins Hurdles, Long Jump

Princeton- The Larry Ellis Invitational has long been one of the East Coast's premier track meets, as just getting accepted into it can be challenging.  Winning two events, however, is unheard of.

Unless, of course, you're Jessie Gaines.

Gaines, the #3 finisher in the USA Indoor Championships months ago in the long jump, had two impressive victories this weekend in the 100 high hurdles and long jump.   After owning the fastest time in the trials, she blasted a 13.57 to win the final. Teammate Bianca Marten, who had the second fastest time in the trials with a 14.01, clipped several hurdles and didn't finish the final.

She bombed away in the long jump, her best event, winning the event with a solid 20-7.75 effort.

Marten hands off to Davis in the 4x100

The 4x100 relay continued a strong season, as Marten, Shene Davis, Alica Ross, and Antoinette Padilla won their heat easily, clocking 47.42 to break their club record from the week before.  Davis later took third in the triple jump (40-6.75), and Padilla ran a PR in the 200m in 24.77.  Kelsey Lewis cleared 5-3 for 9th place in the high jump.

In the distance events, Ally Black rolled through two miles at 11:15, after clicking off a 5:35 then 5:40 miles.  Her hips tightened up with 1200m to go, and she went from running 17:30 to 17:55 in the 5k.  In the 1500m, Robyn Evangelist made her spring debut, opening up in 4:47.39, as Lindsay Prettyman broke the 800m club record with a 2:13.79 clocking.  On Saturday afternoon, Nicole Salge opened up her spring 800m season with a 2:20.48.

4x400, Kirkland Shine at Princeton
Long jumper Herman Kirkland was struggling to knock the rust off for hours.  Adjusting his steps and approach nearly every jump, he hadn't competed since the USA Indoor Championships in mid-March.

Then he uncorked a 25'2" jump, and with that, the rust was off for good.

Kirkland won the event by over a foot, as he also ran the third leg on the 42.08 relay that was running 40.xx until anchor Chris Turner
slowed in the final 20 meters due to a tightening in his hip flexor.  Ish Robbins and Derrhyl Duncan ran the first two legs on that relay which hopes to break 41.00 this Friday at Penn Relays.

Also in the field, veteran pole vaulter Craig Van Leeuwen finished fourth (15-11), with former club record holder Matt Tholis finished 3rd in the javelin with a 207-4 throw.
Sharpe winning his 800m heat

Several solid performances came in the 1500m, as Josh Neyhart (3:56.66) and Kyle Price (3:58.64) both cracked 4:00.  In the 800, Logan Sharpe continued his winning ways, winning his second straight 800m heat, this time in a PR of 1:51.23.  Teammate Dylan Lowry, the club's winning Millrose Games sprint medley anchor, got bumped and boxed in, settling for a 1:52.10 finish.

Will Taylor made an impressive club debut with a 49.40 400m.  He later teamed with Duncan, Robbins, and Mark Parisen to finish in 3:17.58, the club's fastest relay time ever in April.
Both 4x400 relays after the race at Princeton

  Podium Finishes for Wesley, Leonard
Cyrus Wesley finished second in both the 100m and 200m this weekend at the Greyhound Invitational at Moravian College.  After being the top finisher in the trials in 10.75, he came back with a 10.68 for second in the final.  He came back and ran 21.85 in the 200m.

Micah Leonard won the triple jump with a 38-00 jump.

Chegwiddin Wins KEA 5k

Aimee Chegwidden (left) was the second finisher overall, and the first women finisher, on Sunday's KEA Pot of Gold 5k.  She came in at 19:31, impressive for her spring racing debut
.  Teammate Karen Auteri
, middle, finished in 19:58 and was the second woman finisher.  Don Weiss won his age group and finished 6th overall with a 21:07 time.

Fonder Wins 5k; Castro Sub-20
River Edge, NJ: Mike Fonder, running his hometown 5k race, won by 2:17, as he blitzed the River Edge Recreation Annual River edge 5k course in 15:45.2.

Katie Castroagudin was second overall, running an all-time PR of 19:50--her first time dipping under 20:00.

The USA Today and ESPN covered the event, but they wouldn't disclose any pictures, citing privacy infringement issues.  So we haven't any.

Callan Wins 5k
Usually club officials get nervous when club members are being escorted by police, but this time, it was for all the right reasons.

Chelsea Callan was the overall winner of the Race 4 the Children 5k at Warinanco Park this weekend!

Chefitz: Two Weeks, Two PRs
Ezra Chefitz recorded a second PR in two weeks, as the Rutgers senior won the Hillel 5k Sunday morning on a USATF-certified course Buccleuch Park in 17:36.

Boston Marathon: aGSTC Men, Women, Masters Men Teams Finish Best in NJ

A Message from the President
This is the busiest month of the club.  Between hosting the CAM and aGP Youth Track Meet, competing in Grand Prix races and track meets, volunteering sat the NJ Marathon...it's a lot.  Consequently, response time to emails, texts, FB messages, and phone calls will be slower than usual from the aGSTC Headquarters.  Thank you for your patience, in advance.  xoxoxo

"I fear no evil. Pain is my play thing. Thank You All." - from Mike's Facebook, after running the Boston Marathon a mere month after hernia surgery.

Peter's Proverb

"No snarky comments today, Doctor.  I'm genuinely impressed.  I'd also like to note that you are the only person in history to say 'Pain is my play thing'.  Google that phrase, and the only result is a 'See Anis Run' blog post from 2012."
