MASTERS WOMEN TEAMS GO 1-2 IN SEASON OPENER

The masters women opened up the 2019 season doing something they've never done before: sweep the first two places in a W40 championship.

Jess Byrnes lead the squad with a 41:08 10k time, just seconds off her all-time PR.  Two of her teammates, Aya Leitz (41:22) and Amy Berstein (41:43- club debut) both dipped under 42:00 to round out an incredibly impressive top three women.

The next three scoring women were Jen Zehr (42:47- club debut), Gabrielle Panepinto (43:00), and Heather McDermott (45:49).

Kim Aspholm, Atsuko Maruyama, Sue Lawlor, Stephanie Edwards, and Prudence Jones wrapped up the finishers for the Black and Gold.

OPEN WOMEN TEAMS GO  1-2-3 IN SEASON OPENER

The GSTC women opened up their season with an impressive 1-2-3 team finish, as Nicolette Mateescu won the open 10k USATF-NJ title in 36:12 with teammate Shelby Goose (36:23) just steps behind for second place.  Goose teamed up with Aimee Chegwidden (38:44), Adrianne Speranza (40:19), Jess Byrnes (41:08), and Allie Ayers (41:35) teamed up for the winning team.

Newcomers Izzy Gladstone (38:51) and Berstein joined GSTC vets Mateescu, Leitz, and Kate Ashley for the second place team finish.

The third place team had four new members along with Heather McDermott, our masters captain and our club's awesome real estate agent.  Mary Babcock (42:44) lead the way, with teammates Larissa Pywowariw, Laura Barnes, and Jen Zehr just behind her.

M40+ Win National Title in Road 8k At VA Beach

The GSTC M40+ masters team for won the 2019 USATF 8k national team title in late March down in Virginia Beach.   Jonathan Frieder, the 2018 GSTC masters MVP, was the #1 man in 26:29.  Helping the squad clinch the team title were Sam Teigen (26:44), John Hogan (29:05), Harold Porcher (30:01), and Gary Leaman (30:06).

This was the club's first step in defending their 2018 national Grand Prix team title.  With some injuries, however, the group faces a tough road ahead of them.

"You sweep the top three team sports and you want a headline?  Did you even see my age-graded PLP in last week's 8k despite the frigid real feel?  We just aren't impressed.  I could have easily swept the top four team spots.  And I'm almost 50.  This team is soft."

GS10 IN YEAR THREE!
GARDEN STATE 10 MILER A HUGE SUCCESS

The GS10 had a third successful year, with numbers up for the third straight year in both races.  It appears that the event will be able to donate $8,000 to the Nick Magos Cancer Call Out charity, making it $22,000 total in three years.

Once again, it was a collaboration between the Franklin PD, the FHS ROTC, the GSTC, the Somerset SWAT Team, and the Somerset County Parks Commission.

2019 HALL OF FAME

Congratulations to Matt Baker for his induction into the GSTC Hall of Fame last month at the GSTC Gala.

Matt was honored for both his service to the club and his racing for the masters team.  In 2013, Matt took over as the masters captain and both helped it grow tremendously and laid the foundation for what it is today: one of the best in America.  Still a fledgling club at the time he joined, almost all members were in their 20s and 30s.  Matt slowly helped change that culture, recruiting and rallying older runners to both join and race for the GSTC.  He rallied together masters teams that competed at club nationals in 2014 (Lehigh), 2015 (San Francisco), and 2016 (Tallahassee).

In addition to his work with the masters team, he did many others things to support the growth and well-being of the club.  He attended and contributed to the Leadership Team for five years, continues to do the club's taxes, donates his time and money to the club yearly, and labored passionately to both continue the club's sponsorship with adidas and land a new one after this deal ended.

Although he did compete with GSTC masters teams both on the local and and national circuit, his induction makes him the first GSTC Hall of Famer to be inducted primarily for his service, not performance.
