2016 Team Racing Schedule & Banquet Awards!!!

THE WEEKLY EMAIL

A little snow never hurt nobody

2016 aGSTC SPRING RACING SCHEDULE
ANNOUNCED!!!!

For five years, we have followed a road racing schedule designed by members of other clubs.
In 2016, this is changing.  By a vote of 20-2, the Leadership Team voted to create our own schedule, create our own intra-team Grand Prix, and create our own opportunities all over New Jersey.  After all, we are New Jersey's club: so let's explore the many great events within the Garden State!

Is it a change?  Yes!  Is change good?  Yes!  Google keeps changing and adapting, and look where they are now.  Blockbuster Video refused to change, and...well, yeah.  Indeed, we are a team of nearly one thousand members, and finding ways to serve and support them all will always be our top priority.

Over the past month, a Spring Race Committee consisting of Katie Castro, Karen Auteri, Tim Seeley, Kyle Price, Prudence Jones, and Chuck Schneekloth have been emailing furiously to put together a fun, diverse schedule that fits the needs of all runners: from our 4:05 milers to our 10:05 milers.

***That said, the masters teams have voted to continue with the USATF-NJ Grand Prix.***

Peter's Puzzler

Peter Bolgert is an esteemed member of the club who was on the DMR that won the club national title in 2013 for the aGSTC.  A former Marquette standout in the steeplechase, he is now halfway through a PhD program in the plasma physics department at Princeton University.  In hopes to raise the intellectual rigor to the club's weekly email, he designs weekly puzzlers to sharpen the wit, acumen, and intellect of the club...while wearing this onesey.

This puzzle is a true classic.

Three GSTC members check into a hotel.  They pay $30 to the manager and go to their room.  The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return to the guests.

On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that $5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1 to each person.

Now each person paid $10 and got back $1.  So they paid $9 each, totaling $27. The bellboy has $2, totaling $29.

Where is the missing $1?

The Anis Angle
I bought my last shirt for $1.

Answer: Be careful of what you add together!  Originally, they paid $30, they each received back $1, they now have only paid $27.  Of this $27, $25 went to the manager for the room and $2 went to the bellboy.

Kyle's Korner
If you hear the name Gillette and immediately think of things like harden steel, sharpness, a comfortable grip, well ironically you wouldn't be too far off of descriptions for Matt Gillette. He's got a workout ethic of hardened steel, trains his body to a competitive level of such sharpness that he was eligible for the Olympic Trials, and he does it all with a calm comfortable and humble demeanor that all but sneaks up on you. Even when it comes time to "disposing" of a current goal, a decision much harder then a toss in the nearest bin mind you, he has a "replacement" already waiting and sets his sights on the next achievement. I don't think this sharp guy is going dull anytime soon.

MATT GILLETTE

Kyle: Hello Matt and thank you for joining us!
Mr. Gillette: No problem.
Kyle: Can you start us off with a little history of your introduction to running?
Mr. Gillette: I first started running in 7th grade. I did football the previous year and I knew that wasn't going to last long. My friends mom from baseball told my mom that I should do cross-country, I knew I was decent so I figured why not.
Kyle: Very early start! How did your high school career carry out?
Mr. Gillette: Made it to states all four years in XC, medaled with a 19th place my senior year and capped it off with a PR of 15:40. In track I didn't break out until my junior year where I medaled at states in the 3200 with a 6th place finish in 9:26. Came back my senior year and placed 4th with a time of 9:19. I qualified for states in the 1600 with a time of 4:20 but chose to focus on the 3200.
Kyle: I hope you got your Mom's friend a nice gift before leaving for college. Speaking of college, how did you decide on Shippensburg?
Mr. Gillette: Haha I've looked back and was thankful they had that conversation. There were couple reasons why I chose Shippensburg. One being my coach Steve Spence. Once I saw his credentials and knew what he had done, that really peaked my interest. I also saw the program was up and coming and I wanted to be part of something great. Lastly, ship has a great business program and with me in marketing it was a perfect fit all around.
Kyle: I take it you meshed well with the team just based on your post collegiate contact with guys on GSTC that are Ship alumni?
Mr. Gillette: Yep absolutely. Right away I felt included and knew that it was the place for me.
Kyle: What were some of your favorite moments during your time there?
Mr. Gillette: My first would be when we won our first conference title in XC in 2010. We went 2,3,4,5,10 to take it. I was 4th, Neyhart was 5th. We'd end up with a seventh place finish at nationals.
We won the DMR at nationals twice, in 2011 and in 2013. I led off with the 1200 (3:02) in 2011 and anchored with the 1600 (4:03) in 2013. The first one is more special because we came in as the 8th seed just trying to get top 8. We shocked pretty much everyone and ourselves with the win.

Kyle: Did all this success lead you to post collegiate running?
Mr. Gillette: Yep. I knew there was more to come once I graduated and I wanted to see what my potential was.
Kyle: When did you start getting into the longer distances?
Mr. Gillette: After college. I was mainly mid distance in college. Mile/1500 was my focus. I decided that the longer distances were fitting me better. I was having more success in the longer distance so I started training and focusing on those more.
Kyle: When and why did you make the pledge to the black and gold army?
Mr. Gillette: This past spring/summer. Josh peaked my interest in GSTC during track and got me in contact with Chuck at a meet at Princeton.
Kyle: You've had quite a bit of success while donning a GSTC uniform.
Mr. Gillette: Thanks yeah, it's been awesome. Being a part of the team at club XC was an amazing experience.
Kyle: How did that race play out for you?
Mr. Gillette: Plan was for me and Alfredo to work together getting out hard and establishing position. I felt great through 7k, started falling off a bit, but had enough to close hard with a 24th place finish. Surprised myself in a field that had a lot of good names.
Kyle: You were also riding high off a recent Olympic qualifying performance correct?
Mr. Gillette: Yep. From Philly rock n roll half and the run for the diamonds on thanksgiving. My fall season of racing was definitely the best I have ever had.
Kyle: Brag a little bit. Tell our readers one of those +20 mile workouts Josh has shown me on Strava.
Mr. Gillette: Those were tough ones. One was 15 min warm up, 2x2mile @ 10:00, 8 miles easy, 2x2mile @ 10:00, 15 min cool down. The other was 8 miles easy, 8 miles marathon pace, 1 mile easy, 4 miles marathon pace, 1 mile easy, 1 mile marathon pace.
The second one was one of the hardest workouts I've done.
Kyle: Let's talk about what I'm going to assume is one of the hardest choices you've made with your running. When did you realize you had to call off the marathon training and step down from the Trials?
Mr. Gillette: The beginning of last week is when we made the choice. I had been dealing with pain in my knee (IT Band) for 3 weeks. I ran through one week of it, and then it got to the point where I had to take time off. I tried all the measures to get healthy again, but my body wasn't responding quickly enough. It was a very tough decision, but the right one. Nothing good would have come out of running through the pain and potentially being injured even longer.

Kyle: What's your plan now? And will you be taking a shot at the Olympic Trials again in the future?
Mr. Gillette: Plan is to hopefully do some track and road races. We'll see how it goes. As for another shot at the trials we'll see. I'd rather try and qualify for track than the marathon.
Kyle: I take it you're a 10k guy?
Mr. Gillette: Yeah that would probably be the event I would have to beat shot at. Or maybe the steeplechase,
Kyle: OOO STEEPLE! Sorry I get excited easily.
Let's get a little personal. With the last name Price I was subject to some Fisher Price's and childish money teasing. Did you get any flack with the last name Gillette or were you alpha dog on the playground?
Mr. Gillette: Kind of. I got a lot of the little jokes like "Mach fusion", or "razor".
Kyle: Those aren't bad nicknames actually.
Mr. Gillette: Yeah it was nothing bad. I can't think of any bad nicknames.
Kyle: Well unfortunately I can't think of anymore bad questions at the moment so I guess that's all the time we have for this week.
Thank you for speaking with us!
Mr. Gillette: Thanks for having me!
Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!
