aGSTC Training Plan Questions about the team fall training plan?
You can contact them at them at ken_goglas@hotmail.com or michael.fonder@gmail.com. Kyle's Korner Kyle's Korner is a segment of the Club's weekly email that will focus on reacquainting you with a different current club member each week. We will catch you up on how they are doing with regards to their training, their lives, and other general nonsense. This segment intends to be informative and educational while attempting humor in a purely inoffensive way. Mostly. This week on Kyle's Korner we spoke with the always-impressive Greta Sieve. Road races, track meets, and cross country courses all have her on their most wanted lists for her tendency to "kill it" no matter where she is competing. The pleasant place she used to call home sure didn't have a calming effect on her aggressive pursuit of top notch running accomplishments throughout her career, and she's still at it! Kyle: Hello Greta thanks for joining us! Ms. Sieve: Thank you, Kyle! Kyle: Lets start from the beginning... What's your very first memory? No wait let's fast-forward a bit... How did you get to Garden State through your running career? Ms. Sieve: Well, a few months after I moved to this fine state, I decided to race the Superbowl 4 mile in Morristown, more or less on a whim. Because I didn't have a team in NJ yet, I wore my Run'n'Fun race gear (my team from MN). At the end of the race, Chuck boldly used it as a conversation starter to hook me in. The rest? Yeah, it's history. Kyle: Aahh yet another unsuspecting young lady turned to our club by a classic Chuck creep maneuver. Why the move to our great state besides the greatness? Ms. Sieve: Oh, that's what you were going for? Well, I followed my boyfriend, Mike, after he got the "Director of Track and Field Operations" job at Princeton. Honestly, I thought we were crazy for leaving Minnesota "nice" for Jersey.. um.. "crazy"? But it seems to have worked out okay J. Kyle: Well yes you'd be hard-pressed to find somewhere nicer than Minnesota, but anyone willing to still competitively run after college is a little crazy so Jersey definitely fits. Look at me, I'm nuts! What do you miss most about Minnesota? Ms. Sieve: My dog! No, wait! My nephew! And my training partners! And the way the City would plow the running trails in the winter. Okay, so pretty much everything except winter. Kyle: Have you ever thought of going back? Ms. Sieve: Yes. But really, I couldn't handle the winter anymore. Also, I happen to really like my boyfriend, and he happens to really like his job. So there's that. Kyle: But mostly the winter right? Now I hear you've recently had a huge PR in quite a big race. Ms. Sieve: You heard correct. Kyle: Can you tell us the terrific tale? Ms. Sieve: Sure! So pretty much, I went out fast, ran fast through the middle. And then I finished fast. Actually, I went out in 5:41 and thought "Oh, brother! I am going to pay for that!" But I followed it up with a 5:35 or something and just kept pushing through the pain. I guess my long distance legs just weren't used to the shock of racing faster than 6:00 pace because they certainly held their own, despite it. Kyle: How did you finish place and time wise? Ms. Sieve: I think I was 52nd overall or something. My time was 28:? Is it sad that I don't even know what my official time was? Maybe 28:21? Kyle: 28:23.45, First Female Finisher, and about a 50 second PR correct? No need to be humble in my Korner ha. Ms. Sieve: Last year I ran 29:11 and that was my previous PR. So I guess a little shy of 50 seconds. Kyle: That's awesooome! You're clearly in a good place training wise. What are you looking to do at nationals? Ms. Sieve: Survive? Cross-country has never really been my strong suite. Also, I'm in a weird place with training right now. So I know I've got the fitness to help the team out. Apart from that, I have no expectations and no idea how it'll go. Kyle: Sometimes not having expectations is best. No pressure! What are looking forward to in the near future as far as racing? Ms. Sieve: Indeed! I seem to race best when I just roll with it! As far as my future in racing? You ask a tough question, Mr. Price! Like I said, I'm kind of in a weird place. I just fired my coach last night, and now I'm deciding whether I want to try to put together a track season (Steeple!!!) or build for another crack at the marathon. So really, I'm a little lost... If you have advice, I'm more than happy to hear it! Kyle: Weeell if you're truly asking, I always want more company on the steeplechase bench. Love that event. Did you compete in it in college? Ms. Sieve: Did I? I was an All American steeplechaser! Nobody loves jumping over shit like I do! Kyle: Whaaaaat?! That's so cool! You definitely gotta come back and show this interviewer some pointers right after he fire's his information gatherer. What place did you finish at nationals? Ms. Sieve: Ha! I don't remember off the top of my head! I went in with like the 2nd fastest time. But finished maybe 6th or 7th. Ohio's heat killed this Minnesota girl. Kyle: Mmm jumping in warm steeple water ain't no fun. Well hey just getting to Nationals is a huge accomplishment, then placing and becoming an All American? You're on a whole 'nother level. Well that's all the time we have this week. Thank you so much for speaking with us and good luck with the coaching search! Ms. Sieve: Thank you! The pleasure was all mine! Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!
Twitter Follower of the Week As you may know, Josh Neyhart runs the club's Tinder page. Oh wait, we mean Twitter. If you haven't followed us @GardenStateTC, you should. In fact, we have 816 followers--12 more than last week. Looks like Josh is slipping a little bit.
This week's Follower of the Week is Caroline Gregory. She's a professional triathlete and attorney. Goodness only knows this club could know more good lawyers. A few judges would be helpful, too.

Alyssa Vassallo
Alyssa is one of the newest ladies to join the GSTC. She ran cross country, winter and spring track in high school and was a two-time sectional champion, 1st team all conference and 1st team all group 1.
She is currently attending UNC, where she is double majoring in Chemistry and Exercise and Sport Science. She will be graduating in May even though she is only a junior! She is planning to attend medical school in the near future, after taking perhaps a year or two off.
Alyssa runs for the UNC club cross country team. Her PRs include 17:59 - 5k, 22:40 - 6k, and 38:13 - 10k. She placed 4th at the NIRCA Nationals last year and this year she won the NIRCA Southeast Region Championship and placed 5th at Nationals! The 5k is her favorite distance but she has run a half-marathon and is looking to run a marathon in March 2015 and hopefully the NYC marathon in November 2015.
Whipping, NJ is where Alyssa calls home. When she is not running or doing school work, she enjoys cooking, playing soccer and watching Grey's Anatomy. She also does a lot of volunteer work with UNC Hospitals, Carolina For The Kids, Special Olympics and Carolina Leadership Academy.
Aimee Chegwidden Aimee is one of the newest ladies to join the GSTC. She has been competitively running since she was 11 years old. She ended up going to Saint Joseph's University and ran for them all four years. Since graduating, she has run a couple half marathons. She currently runs mostly on her own so it can be difficult for her to get workouts and speed work done by herself. Her training primarily consists of longer runs and an occasional tempo.
Aimee graduated from Saint Joseph's with a degree in Art Education and is currently on the job hunt. She is considering heading back to school to pursue a second degree in Psychology, after which she would pursue a job in the Art Therapy field.
Some of Aimee's hobbies include painting, pottery, reupholstering chairs, snowboarding and after recently buying a bike, cycling. She currently lives in Sussex County in a town called Hamburg, which is not too far from the Appalachian Trails, so she also hikes a lot with all the great hiking and running trails around.
Her favorite running spots are Kittany State Park or a part of the Appalachian Trails called "the boards". |
MEN BRING THE HEAT IN THE THANKSGIVING SNOW | Part of the open men's team celebrate after their final team race on Thursday. | Men Sweep Top 5 Team Spots in Team Finale Glen Ridge- The aGSTC open men, in a final team showing before club nationals, put on an impressive display of dominance never seen before at the long-standing Thanksgiving morning tradition, the Ashenfelter 8k.
Sweeping the top five team spots, the individual times were fraught with personal bests. In fact, Youssef Rochdi's 24:24 win was a course record, as he battled NYAC's Thomas Young until dropping him in the final mile. He averaged 4:55 pace for the sizzling club and course record run. | Rochdi hits the tape in a course and club record as Boston Marathon Champ Tom Fleming smiles. | In fact, the MIB put 12 in the top 15--an incredible feat in such a competitive event. Leading the charge was upstart Kyle Price , who dropped a 1:00 PR with a 25:08 finish for 3rd. Mike Fonder was fourth in 25:22, and in another big surprise, Steve Ellwood rolled in as the 5th finisher with a huge PR of 25:25. Roommates Ken Goglas and Josh Neyhart were 7th-8th running 25:35 and 25:43, respectively, as Matt Eder (25:45) and Atilla Sabaholgu (25:45) rounded out the race's top ten.
Last year. the squad's top 5 averaged 24:58 on the course, and this year they were 25:10. This is a bit misleading, however, as top 5 athletes Chris Croff, Chris Johnson, and Chris Warren did not run.
The impressive data comes from the 6th-10th finishers, or the Ashenfelter B Team. Last year, they averaged 26:25; this year, they were 25:43. The ten man average was 25:42 in 2013; days ago, the top 10 aGSTC'ers were 25:21.
| Rochdi leads the swarming black and gold in the opening 400m |
Rob Nihen , in his first race of 2014 after a year-long injury, rolled to an impressive 11th place finish with a 25:47 time. The Doctor of Love, Facial Hair, and Long-Ass-Stories, Mike Anis, popped a PR of 25:49 for 12th while Chris Schneider was 13th in 25:56. Despite battling a cold all week, Tradelle Ward laced 'em up and averaged 5:16s good for 15th, or 26:09. Other notable breakthrough PRs were Zak Martins (26:44), Brad Livingston (30:27), Edsel Flores (27:43), Mark Minervini (28:27), Jarrett Kunze (26:17), Will Alston (27:32), Corey Caplan (26:59), Nick Murphy (27:23), and Ryan DeGregorio (29:23). Both apologies and congratulations to Kyle Mahoney, who becomes the fastest dude in club history (27:43) to be forgotten to be placed on a team. With the win, the Black and Gold extend their USATF-NJ Grand Prix winning streak to thirty straight team races, dating back to September 2011. This is both an association and national record for most consecutive open victories.
Post race interviews here. Ashenfelter finish here. (we graciously accept Cheyenne's filming resignation papers)

Masters 40s Finish 6th Glen Ridge- After a long, slow comeback this fall with hopes to finish in the top three for a year-end's plaque, the aGSTC's 40s team fell just short, as they were down several top runners due to family and traveling commitments on Thanksgiving.
With their 6th place at Ashenfelter, the 40s men will be 4th for the 2014 USATF-NJ Grand Prix season--the highest finish by any masters team in club history.
John Montgomery was the first man in, finishing 78th overall with a solid 29:05 time. Captain Matt Baker was second in 30:47; they are both pictured above. Nick Van Langen (31:28), Eric Davis (32:12), and Kenny Huryk (32:32, below) rounded out the scoring top five.
