GSTC Breaks USATF-NJ Records
Glen Ridge- The Garden State Track Club broke the USATF-NJ single-season points record on Thursday, the Ashenfelter 8k team championship finale, a tribute to the depth and commitment of the club's athletes in 2013. Needing 62 points in the final event, the club piled up 67 as the men swept the top four spots, and the women took the top two. The men snagged an 8th, and the women a 6th, to complete the team scoring.
More impressive is that the former record, 577 points from the 2005 Morris County Striders, is from the old nine-race schedule. In 2012, the USATF-NJ implemented an eight-race team championship schedule, scratching the ten miler in December, in part due to the GSTC's lobbying efforts, as it conflicted with club cross country nationals.
In addition to this record, the GSTC clinched their first USATF-NJ Overall Team title, along with open men (third consecutive) and open women (second consecutive) team titles. It is also the first time a USATF-NJ club won both open titles with perfect, undefeated records. Finally, while the women haven't lost a Grand Prix race since May 6, 2012, the men haven't lost one, their only loss, since September 27, 2011—the longest winning streak in association history.
Johnson Shatters CR, Leads 1-2-3-4 Sweep
Glen Ridge- Chris Johnson sizzled the Ashenfelter course in club record breaking fashion, dropping 4:56 miles for the 4.97 mile course to finish in 24:32, good for second overall. Teammate and training partner Chris Croff was just a few steps behind him in third, finishing in 24:41, with Steve Mennitt dipping under 25:00 as well, finishing 5th in 24:48. These were the three fastest 8k times ever run by men in black and gold.
Other men finishing in the top ten included Ken Goglas (25:20/8th), Paul Matuszak (25:34/9th), and Mike Anis (25:52/10th).
2012 USATF-NJ 5k XC Champ and GSTC 800m club record holder Tony Harris debuted this fall with a modest 27:09, while the legendary Jeff Perrella, running in a team t-shirt and board shorts, ran a shocking 26:37 for 16th overall.
The four teams were evenly distributed resulting in team averages of 26:39, 26:51, 26:57, and 27:01. The fifth team would have completed a 1-2-3-4-5 sweep had it not missed one runner. There were sixteen scoring teams in the race.

Women Finish First Perfect Season
The GSTC ladies had four teams finish 1, 2, 6, 12 in the final team championship race, capping their first perfect season in the USATF-NJ Grand Prix. The team was led by three finishing in the top ten: Cheyenne Ogletree (28:38), Alyssa Douma (30:08), and Sarah Schillaci (30:25).
Allie Dublinski finished in 30:28, a tremendous way to close out her 2013 season fraught with illness and injury. Three others ran strong races—Chelsea Callan (30:49), Angela Dunn (31:06), and Karen Auteri (31:33)—to help the women dominate the team scoring.
Kat Berka, Jennifer Lucas, and Sakina Namazi all made their GSTC debuts on Thursday, as numerous Steady Striders participated on the 12th place team, a group that beat four scoring teams.

Final Brouhaha: Mo-Town Wins the Day…
Thanks to an incredible effort by Sarah Schillaci and the 1-2 punch of Johnson-Croff, Woody Kongsamut's Morristown Enclave, once the doormat enclave, captured their first ever Brouhaha Race Title. A total 52 runners competed, 29 men and 23 women, to comprise the final GSTC Brouhah of 2013.
The women-heavy North snagged second with the trio of Ogletree-Douma-Auteri, with the men-heavy Central taking third with Mennitt-Goglas-Anis. The rising South Enclave slipped to fourth, with Jeff Perrella leading Jersey City to 5th while the struggling Beach was a distant 6th. The Princeton Enclave, known for their enclave shirts and strong starts, limped home in last place.
…But Central and North Finish Tied for First
1960's Michigan State University's head football coach Duffy Daugherty once said, "A tie is like kissing your sister," to which famous baseball player George Brett extended years later, "If a tie is like kissing your sister, losing is like kissing your grandmother with her teeth out." With all metaphors aside, the Central and North Enclaves both finished with 11 total points after Ashenfelter, most likely resulting in no kisses at all. The CE held on to a slim one-point lead with one final race, but the NE came storming back, finishing second to the upstart Morristown Enclave.
Speaking of holding on, the Princeton Enclave, once the gold standard of all enclaves, survived a massive late-season crumbling, yet were able to hold on to the final podium spot for 2013 with 19 points. The Mo-Town Enclave came up just short of a top three finish, with 21 points, as did the South, who settled for 4th overall with 23 points. There was a tie for last place, as both the Beach and Jersey City Enclaves finished with 27 points. Awards to top enclaves, their captains, and their members will be distributed at the 2013 GSTC Banquet on Saturday, January 18th.

Atilla Sabahoglu
Atilla joined GSTC because he wanted to train with a group close to my house. As long time member of long time member of Central Park Track Club and resident of Piscataway, he realized that the distance was too much and liked what GSTC was all about. His Prs include 4:19 in the mile, 8:30 in the 3k, 9:24 in the 3k steeple, 14:14 in the 5k, and 32:46 in the 10k. At 35 years old his ultimate goal for this upcoming season is to break 15 in the 5k again. He trains very hard usually doing about 50 miles a week with 2 hard workout, 1 long run and a rest jog. Outside of running he fixes Iphones, reads, and spends time with his family.
Kelsey Lewis
Kelsey joined gstc after she graduated from rowan in may. she did track all through Hs and stopped in college, but then she jumped on the team during the last winter and spring season because Ringo the coach is straight up the coolest guy ever and they won njacs both seasons and just wanted to keep at it. She just highjump, but is hoping to become decent in the 200 eventually. Her pr in Hs was 5'1 and she managed to get back to that height in her brief 4 month career in college, so her goal now is just be to keep moving that bar up!. Pre meet routines are to sleep wonderfully using zquil night before and make best friends with the official at the meet so she can hang out with them at the bar after(apparently she is just kidding). She tends to be more friendly than your average jumper, she gets better vibes when the officials like you. Outside of running she is a big snowboarder, traveler, enjoys her cute puppy and works a full time job.

This Week in Training
We're coming down to the big finish! Two plans from here on in: one for those of you running at the Big Chill on Sunday 12/8, and one for those moving on to Club XC Nats on Saturday 12/14. You want to be fresh and sharp going into these races, so take your work on feel. Err on the slower side rather than faster, err on less work rather than more.
Big Chill crew:
Monday - 6-8x 8-10sec hill sprints, then a comfortable run. Be sure you're well warmed up before doing the sprints!
Tuesday - 1.5M at T pace, take 2 minutes, then go 8x400 at 5k pace on a 2:30 cycle. If your reps are longer than 90 seconds, go on a 3:00 cycle.
Wednesday - Similar run to Monday, but skip the sprints.
Thursday - 1x1200 at 5k pace, 2 minutes rest, then 2x800 at race pace with 90 seconds rest, then 2x200 at kick pace.
Friday - Very easy 40 minutes, followed by 4x200 at mile pace
Saturday - shakeout
Sunday - RACE!
Nats crew:
Monday - 6-8x 8-10sec hill sprints, then a comfortable run. Be sure you're well warmed up before doing the sprints!
Tuesday - 2x2k at T pace with 2:30 rest, followed by 1xM at 10k pace with 2:00 rest, followed by 2x800 at 5k pace with 1:30 rest. Finish it off with 1x400 HARD!
Wednesday - steady-state run of 75% long run duration
Thursday - super easy 40-60 mins
Friday - 7x1k at 10k pace with 2:00 rest, followed by 4x200 at kick pace
Saturday - same as Monday.
Sunday - 75% long run.
