(11/4-11/10): The 2013 GSTC Enclave Brouhaha's Final Battle!

Ashenfelter: The Deciding Brouhaha Battle

Glen Ridge- While it appears that, with a commanding three digit lead going into the final team championship race, the Ashenfelter Classic 8k on Thanksgiving morning, the GSTC will win the USATF-NJ Overall Team Title, there is one thing that is not quite certain.

Which Enclave will perform best at Ashenfelter and win the Enclave Brouhaha?

After four races, here's what we're looking at:

1st- Central Enclave- 8 points (2+3+2+1)

2nd- North Enclave- 9 points (3+1+1+4)

3rd- Princeton Enclave- 12 points (1+2+7+2)

4th- South Enclave- 19 points (7+6+3+3)

5th- Morristown Enclave- 20 points (6+5+4+5)

6th- Beach Enclave- 21 points (4+4+6+7)

7th- Jersey City Enclave- 22 points (5+6+5+6)

There are two races within this one team-wide race.  First, there is a very close dogfight for the overall title.  Right now, Enclave Captain Erika Meling's Central Enclave clings to a narrow one-point lead, yet two teams are within striking distance: the DeCarlo's North Enclave and "The Three Amigo's" (Ashwin Anantharaman, Peter Bolgert, and Mike Fonder's) Princeton Enclave.  They are just one point and four points behind, respectively, and truly any of these three groups could pull out a dubya if the cards fall right.  As of this publication, Vegas currently has the Central Enclave at 3:2 odds, North 3:1 odds, and Princeton 4:1 odds at winning the whole thing.  If you need a bookie…call Stiv Mennitt.  We're sure he has one, or at least had one, at some point.  It's just a funny feeling we have.

From there, four teams are battling it out for 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th place…with an incredibly slim three points separating them.  An upstart South Enclave, led by Adin Mickle and Paul Matuszak, has mounted an impressive rally and seems to have the momentum needed to hold on for fourth place.  Woody Kongsamut, the Morristown Enclave captain, would like nothing better but to cook these two southerners as his Thanksgiving goose, but it's going to take him rallying the big guns from Mo-Town to do so.  The dark horse here is the Beach Enclave, but if captain Kenny Walsh can't bring 'em out on race day, they may turn into My Little Pony instead.  While in 7th now, the Jersey City Enclave does have an outside shot at leapfrogging a few enclaves, especially with its newly anointed captain, William Appman (newly anointed=we just texted him tonight, and he agreed!).

Editor's Final Brouhaha Standings Predictions:  1- Central, 2- North, 3- South, 4- Princeton, 5- Beach, 6- Morristown, 7- Jersey City.

RACE UPDATE:  Masters Women

The Giralda Farms 10k on November 10 is the USATF-NJ masters women's 10k championship. It would be great for GSTC to have a team.  We need at least three women age 40 and over. To compete, you need to....

*be a member of USATF ; specify club #385)

*register for the 10k race. There is a 5k as well as a 10k; make sure you sign up for the 10k.

Can you help us out? If you can race on Nov. 10, e-mail women's masters team captain Prudence Jones (prudence_jones@yahoo.com). The more runners we have, the better--all paces welcome!

NEW AWARD, WEEK #2: President's Award

Last weekend, GSTC sprinter Bri Florovito ran an outstanding sprinter workout.  A Rutgers sophomore, she wakes up at 9:00am every Saturday- not always an easy weekend task for a college student- to train with the sprinters.  However, last Saturday was much different than any other.

Unfortunately, the GSTC women had only fourteen women, and they needed one more to fill out three scoring teams for the USATF-NJ 8k Cross Country Championships.  After texting numerous women on Saturday night (no relationship to Romney's "binders of women", we promise), Bri was the first one to finally respond and say, "It's tomorrow morning?  Sure- I can do it to help out the team!  What time does it start?  When do we leave?  I have never raced an 8k before, but sure- I'll do it."  Moments later, Erika Meling volunteered to pick her up, and boom…we found our final woman, in the final hour, to fill out our third scoring team.

For her persistent attendance at sprinter practice, for her consistent ability to make sacrifices to attend practice despite an arduous college schedule, and for her last-minute sacrifice to race a distance she had never raced before, Bri gets this week's President's Award, the anti-TMA section of the weekly email!

Results: Ashenfelter Tune-Ups!

Ken Walsh won the "2nd 1st Annual Turkey Tune Up" (EN: say that five times fast!) in Point Pleasant in 16:40.  This may be a 5k club record wearing the black sprinter jersey that he seemingly raced with.  Also, it was a 40 second all-time PR for the young man…not a bad day at the races for him and club pacer Kyle Price.

In the Cooper Norcross Run the Bridge 10k, three fine performances were turned in by our beloved South Enclave.  First, Joe Zeoli ran 34:34, the ranking him at #10 on the GSTC All-Time list.  Next, Angela Dunn ran 39:40, winning her age group with an all-time course best and eighth women overall.  This puts her at #6 on the all-time GSTC list.  Finally, newly minted masters member Michelle Botiato, at age 43, ran an incredible 40:02.  Not only did that pull in $250 for being the second masters women finisher, but this puts her one second of Karen Auteri on the GSTC all-time list, just behind Angela at #7.

What are these all-time records we speak of?  Cha cha check it out right here.

Stephen Comanto was the first finisher of five gold jerseys today at the New York City Marathon, as he finished in 2:52:00.  Following him were Ezra Chefitz (4:01:02), Danvid Donza (4:05:30), Diana Angi (4:29:38), and Aysha Mirza (4:36:08).

And, finally, our deepest apologies to Michael James Fonder.  He won last weekend's USATF-NJ 8k XC Championship Title in 25:27, breaking Rob Nihen's Deer Path Park course club record of 25:46.  However, because it was way too late, and we are old, and careless, etcetera, we listed Mike's winning time as 25:46.  Sorry!  We appreciate the fact that many of you called us out on it, but...not a word from Mike himself.  Either he's super humble (he is), or doesn't read the email (this could be a challenge for a PE teacher...).  Either way: congratulations, apologies, and thanks for the understanding.

Gold Star

By Ashwin Anantharaman

Krystal Ramsen

KrystalI just joined GSTC because she couldn't run for her college team.  Her goals are to break 70 in the 400ims and to break 65 in the 400. My PR for the 400ims is 71.5 and then 66 for the 400. She also does the 200 and would like to break 27, my PR is 29. The night before a race she likes to eat healthy and go to bed before 10. On race day she doesn't like to eat a lot before she runs so she might have a half of a dry bagel if her race is later in the day. Then she'll do a 800 warm up with some striders and then do stretches and accelerators.  Outside of running she does a lot of community service. She's a part of Colleges Against Cancer and does a lot of work for Embrace Kids. She also volunteers at a special needs school because she wants to be a special ed teacher focusing on Autism.

Matt Eder

Matt joined after the Jimmy Dean 5k in New Brunswick in early September of this year. Chuck ended up convincing him to join, reminding him he's still young and pretty good at this whole running thing. It's a big team with people all over the state and has a wide range talent to run with. Lately his pre-race has been listening to whatever Beatles songs are buzzing in his head while he reads Calvin & Hobbes. His Prs include 4:29.61 (1600m), 9:53.47 (3200m), 16:14.83 (5k), and 1:15:32 (half marathon).  His only real goal is to keep enjoying running. He doesn't really worry about times anymore.  If he gets better while enjoying it, that's great, but it isn't really the priority. If he's not working, studying, or running, he's probably on Reddit.

Today in GSTC History

During NYC Marathon weekend in 2011, Ken Goglas ran his first race in a gold uniform, breaking the club marathon record in 2:29:40.  However, very few people knew about this recent addition, as Chuck found him working at Runner's Haven just three weeks prior to the marathon, as he had just returned to NJ from Texas.  In fact, during the race Steve Bonica sent quite the famous text during the race: "Hey man, who is this fast guy wearing our uniform up by the front, and where the hell did we find him?"

Tim Morgan Award

Making a late-season run for the 2013 TMA title, Josh Neyhart pops up on the big TMA screen once again.  Why?  Well, not only does he leave his car lights on during the ten mile Central Enclave session on Tuesday, he also continued to finish his run upon realizing, seventy minutes later that he had made the blunder.  Okay, so we kinda respect the idea of finishing the run and dealing with the TMA crap afterward, but regardless…..here's to you, Mr. Neyhart!

This Week in Training

By Chris Tafelski

Let's get it going again!  I have two plans in here - one is if you are not racing this weekend, the other is if you are.  The plan is the same through Thursday.

Monday - 6-8x 8-10sec hill sprints, then a comfortable run.  Be sure you're well warmed up before doing the sprints!

Tuesday - 2m at T pace, then take 2 minutes, then go 4x1k at 8k race pace with equal recovery.  Take a full recovery and go 4x200 at mile pace.

Wednesday - steady-state run of 75% long run duration

Thursday - super easy 40-60 mins

Friday -  4-6M tempo run at T pace.  You want between 25 and 40 mins at pace.  OR if you're racing, fartlek run with 2:3 cycles of 8k race pace/steady distance run pace.  Don't make it hurt, just groove at pace a few times during your run.

Saturday - same as Monday OR shakeout

Sunday - long run OR race
