Luginsland Joins GSTC Coaching Ranks

James Luginsland begins his first season of coaching at GSTC as the Head Throwers Coach after successful seasons coaching on the NCAA DIII level & NJCAA DI level. He began his coaching career in 2011 at Montclair State University where he served as throws coach. While at MSU, Coach Luginsland's throwers earned many conference recognitions, as four  qualified for the 2012 Penn Relays and the 2012 NCAA DIII National Championship in the shot put and javelin.   After a successful season as throwing coach at MSU, he then moved on to coach at Essex County College where he worked with some of the top American and International athletes. At Essex, Coach Luginsland was the assistant coach to Legendary Head Coach Michael Smart. Luginsland was responsible for coaching the throwing events and would serve as a weight room coach for all track & field athletes. He also was under the tutelage and supervision of Coach Smart for coaching the running and jumping events.

As an athlete at Montclair State, Coach Luginsland was a former finalist at the NJAC Championships in the shot put, discus, and hammer throw.  A 4-time letter winner for both Indoor & Outdoor Track & Field, Coach Luginsland holds a Bachelor's of Science in Chemistry from Montclair State University and a USA Level  1 Track & Field Certification. Gold Star: Awesomeness in Membership     by Ashwin Anantharaman
Erin Posbergh
Erin is one of our newest members. Erin joined GSTC because she wanted to run with a group of people and she realized that her friends were in other clubs like CPTC(our rivals). Outside of running she loves to play frisbee and soccer but luckily she has chosen to pursue running. Her goals for being on GSTC is to meet people and run faster although she finds this a lame goal and says she is awesome, I am sure we can call agree that this is a great benefit for being on GSTC

Elvis Cole
Elvis is a recent addition to the GSTC family. He decided to join because he wanted to be part of a team/family and win with a bunch of people. Lucky for us he decided to choose the best club in NJ and soon to be National Champions. Outside of running he likes to bowl,  and design/create art. He is also an active high school track coach which he considers a reward. He is a multi even athlete who has competed in every event with his favorites being the 400 IH and pole vault. His goal is to be an elite pole vaulter, break the Jamaican record this year and compete at the Pan American Games next year.

This Week in Results
Blough Runs 27:12 5k
Pennington- GSTC masters runner Jeff Blough split 8:28-8:29-9:20 to finish in 27:12 this weekend, and in his words, "splits seem less than optimal."  Keep plugging along, Jeff!

Mennitt, Meling Win Superhero Half Marathon
Morristown- Steve Mennitt and Erika Meling both won the Superhero Half Marathon, one of NJ's largest half marathons with 1,100 finishers, At Ginty Field today.   Meling ran 87:52, averaging 6:42 a mile for the 13.1 mile race.  She won by a whopping 1:15, her first major road race win of her career.  On the men's side, Mennit cruised a hard-effort long run with teammate Ken Goglas, rolling to 5:43 miles.  Mennitt won 75:04-75:05, thanks most likely to fuller-formed pectoral muscles than Mr. Goglas.  Mike Fonder's homeboy Bryan McDonnell was third, and the ever-declining Chuck Schneekloth was 4th overall In 77:39, or 5:55 pace.  Master Brian Harris was 93rd overall in 1:39:40,  Jo Ann Coffee was the #2 ranked masters-graded finisher, running 1:55:44 to maintain a steady 8:50/mile pace!, Jessica Byrnes ran 1:37:10 for 70th overall, and Ingrid Stein finished in 1:40:33!

In the relay, Karen Auteri and Woody Kongsamut finished 3rd overall, and 2nd co-ed team, in 86:57.  Amy Denholtz and her brother finished 116th in 2:28, while Kelly Polisin also competed in the relay, but we'd be damned if we could find her in the results, and it's way too late to call her now.  Sonofa!

Flyer Flies to His First Half Marathon
Brooklyn- Just a few weeks after hs younger brother's 5k win, Keith Flyer ran his first half marathon in NYC.  Averaging just under 6:30 miles, the recent Rutgers graduate finished in 1:25.  Impressive for a debut!

Zablockis Place in Ultra
Sussex County--TJ and Jill Zablocki competed in the ultra distance running festival this weekend; the festival had 72, 48, 24, 12, and 6 hour event races.  The goal is to do as many one mile loops as possible within the time window you are competing in.  They both ran the six hour event, with Jill finishing 3rd overall with 35 miles and TJ finishing 2nd overall with 38 miles done.  To make it even crazier, the event was held from 6pm to midnight!

Shephard Lake 5k...From Last Week
Ringwood-Props to our growing masters team, as Don Weise took 1st in the 50-59 age group, Peter Auteri winning the 60-69 age group, and Fran Beideman snagging 2nd in the 60-69 division,

4x400 Extends Winning Streak to Three at Swarthmore Last Chance Invitational
Philadelphia, PA- The GSTC 4x400 continues to have the hot hand building into club nationals, as they won their third straight Monday night at Swarthmore College's Last Chance Invitational hosted by Widener College (watch here).  On perhaps Earth's hardest, slowest track created by humankind, the quartet of Mike Brito, Kaseem Jackson, Ricky Garcia, and Tony Harris won in 3:22.76.  The B Team of Mark Parisen, Jared Hanko, Joe LaFluer, and Darnell Armstrong finished 2nd in 3:24.90, the second time the GSTC has gone 1-2 in the 4x400 relay.

Meet highlights: Chris Turner was 6th in the 100m (11.30), Julius Frederick was 7th in the 200m (22.85), Tony Harris 7th in the 800m (1:53.55), Paul Matuzsak qualified for nationals in the 5k (15:13.31), Peter Bolgert (9:32.54) and Kyle Price (9:30.28) did the same in the 3,00m steeplechase, Aaron Lucas 2nd in the high jump (6'6") and won the long jump (21'6"), and Haleigh Simon 5th in the 200m (26.97/ PR).  Catch the post-race interviews here and here.

This Week in Club History
It's hard to believe, but one year ago today the GSTC women won the grand prix open women's 5k team title....by three minutes and thirty seconds.  After going back and forth with 2011 defending champion RVRR all season, Cheyenne Ogletree (18:30), Alyssa Douma (18:37), Jamie Liberti (18:48), and Kristin Cupido (19:34) steamrolled to their first big win, just one week after barely squeaking by them in the 10k team title by seven seconds.  The WIGs have won every grand prix team race since their 10k win last year.

Quotes of the Week

"It's fine…except the turning."  -Sarah Schillaci, when asked about how it was driving the team van to transport volunteers around the Superhero Half course.

"Im just the little guy on your shoulder in the suit on your shoulder talking in your ear, you're the one putting in the hard work and dedication buddy, and it is definitely paying off.  I'll be waiting for the race you beat me ha."—Kyle Price, via FB to old hometown friend Brad Becker, who he paced to an 18:46 finish today.  Kyle's interest in helping others meet their goal is, and has been, commendable.  We're excited for Brad's comeback after years on the shelf.

"Tell him that was my application for a coaching job."  -Mike Brito, via text, regarding a possible sprint coaching job, referring to his girls who won Union County titles in the 100, 200, 400, 800, and 110HH.

"How come you guys didn't go to the USATF-NJ track meet yesterday?  You were out in full force last year!"  -Randy Miller, Exxex Running Club, before the Superhero Half today.  That's quite a loaded question, but to start, any meet that takes ten minutes between every race just isn't heading in the right direction.

"I'm trying to decide if I should wear clothes or not."  -Karen Auteri, after the SuperHero Half.  Is a context really needed?

"I don't care about those things like club records.  They'll be broken eventually.  I'm just worried about running fast this year.  That's all."  -a humble and grounded Mike Brito, when asked about the good likelihood of two mega-recruits, Logan Sharpe or Demetrius Brooks, breaking his 400IH club record at club nationals in a few weeks

"OK so he is going to come top Princeton and ride with us down to the track meet.  So much for a relaxing drive."  -Peter Bolgert, via text, regarding his new carpooling buddy Mike Anis going to Swarthmore Last Chance Track and Field Meet

"Eugene Asimou is officially in.  He is the school record holder in the shot put at Monclair State.  His best in the shot is 57ft."  -James Luginsland, via text, regarding the GSTC's newest throwing recruit

"I'm trying to decide if I should put clothes on."  -Karen Auteri, to Tim Morgan.  Yeah, the context is probably important, but we'll just leave it at that.

Tim Morgan Award

First nomination goes to homeboy DJing the Superhero Half today.  It's pouring rain, and you didn't bring a tent for your thousands of dollars of equipment?  Luckily, the GSTC had an extra….but asking us to set it up for you lands you on the state's most feared list.

Final nomination goes to the USATF-NJ Long Distance Running (LDR) Committee for their stubborn persistence to keep the Run for Rachel 5k and Our House 5 Miler as USATF-NJ Championship races in 2013.  Last year, they asked us to propose a racing schedule, and in collaboration with both RVRR vice presidents, promptly took these two races OUT.  But they left them in, and here are the facts.  Last week, the Our House had 264 finishers…with three men's teams and three women's teams.  Today, the Rachel 5k had 336 finishers…way smaller than several other non-"championship" races that same day:  Lake Mohawk 5k (405), Hair of the Dog 5k (930), and SuperHero Half (1131).  Heck, the Superhero had 282 in their half marathon relay, and a race called the West Essex Foundation 5k had 281 runners finish.  The question is obvious: why are races being selected as "championship races" that are declining and, in both these cases, nearly defunct if it wasn't for this championship status, thus forcing some runners to participate in them?

Well, both races are put on by long-time USATF-NJ buddy Mark Zenobia and his timing company, On Your Mark Productions (OYMP).  We were told at a USATF-NJ meeting last year that "OYMP knows how to host a championship race," but for what it's worth, we have only been to one championship race where the team results weren't ready to be announced during the awards ceremony because of timing issues: the 2012 Run for Rachel 5k,  hosted by OYMP, the Open Women's Championship last year.

 Just sayin.
