Jonathan's Joke
Peter Bolgert is an esteemed member of the club who was on the DMR that won the club national title in 2013 for the aGSTC. A former Marquette standout in the steeplechase, he is now halfway through a PhD program in the plasma physics department at Princeton University. In hopes to raise the intellectual rigor to the club's weekly email, he designs weekly puzzlers to sharpen the wit, acumen, and intellect of the club...while wearing this onesey.
This column was inspired by Jonathan Sewnig, who told me this joke after the Long Run on Sunday.
A farmer is tending his animals. A disgruntled sheep comes up to him and says, "Stop pushing me around!" The farmer says, "What?" The sheep repeats, "Stop Pushing Me Around!" Again, the farmer replies, "What?" The sheep is getting upset: "STOP PUSHING ME AROUND!" The farmer for a third time replies, "What?" The sheep says, "You Herd Me!"
| | Kyle's Korner Nicola (Nic-Uh-La NOT Nic-Oh-La, get it right already) Hallenborg may be a newer member to the club, but she has already made her mark as a runner to watch. A Michigan alum, she stood out enough to make the Women's XC Club Nationals team this past December and has very early, and as she puts it "naturally", made the transition from longer distance competition on the track to doing full marathons. A self-trained, hard working, distance-loving runner, she is certainly one to keep an eye out for. Here's your chance to get to know her better!
Nicola Hallenborg
Kyle: Hello Nicola and thank you for joining us! Ms. Hallenborg: Thank you for having me. Kyle: How has joining the GSTC been treating you? Ms. Hallenborg: It's been great!! After a year of being pretty unmotivated after college it's nice to have people to run with and keep me accountable (and race with). Kyle: I know that scenario very well. Was the transition out of college running hard for you? Ms. Hallenborg: Oh my god definitely. Especially when I started working and commuting. NJ transit's the worst. Kyle: Do you miss your Michigan team? Has your new running family taken their place well? Ms. Hallenborg: Of course-- there's something reassuring about running with the same people every day at the same time and going through everything together. What I like about GSTC is that even if I miss a couple practices--as I often do..--I can show up at any one and feel right at home. It's been nice having that again. Kyle: Have you been able to regain the fitness level you had in college? Ms. Hallenborg: Haha no, but I'm working on it! I'm training for marathons now mostly, while I focused on the 5k in college. It's much different (especially now that I'm training myself). Kyle: You were fit enough to be a part of our Nationals Team in San Fran this past December! Ms. Hallenborg: Not as fit as I'd have liked to be. Kyle: What made you choose to start focusing on the marathon? Ms. Hallenborg: I've always liked longer distances. AT tempo runs were my favorite workouts. I ran the two-mile in high school and the 10k at Michigan, it just seemed natural/inevitable. Plus I have no leg speed.

Kyle: A long distance lover from the start. BOOM, pun. How was your first marathon experience? Ms. Hallenborg: Amazing. Horrible. The usual first marathon 'ish. I honestly hadn't trained for it very much, it was really hard. I think I had a 9:22 mile in there at one point. I know I can run much faster, but all the people cheering really kept me going -- New York was the best place for a debut!!! Kyle: Which one do you have your sights on for your next attempt? Ms. Hallenborg: New Jersey marathon may 1st! Kyle: We volunteer there! We'll be cheering ha! Are you thinking about stepping on the track for some races as well later in outdoor? Ms. Hallenborg: Blergh. Maybe. We'll see. Maybe one 5k. Kyle: I take it you prefer the roads to the rubber? Ms. Hallenborg: Yeaaaa. But that's more a distance thing. I'm thinking about doing some trail races soon. Kyle: They've got long ones of those I'm sure you'll love. RANDOM QUESTION! What other sport would you be doing if you weren't a runner? Ms. Hallenborg: Soccer. I played it for years but surprise! Played mostly midfield and was a better runner than a soccer player. Kyle: Dude me too! Ms. Hallenborg: Hahahahah yaaasss. My coach used to recruit from the soccer team for track. Kyle: Smart coach! Well that's all the time we have for this week. Thank you for speaking with us! Ms. Hallenborg: J Kyle: Tune in next week to see who we interview!
VOTE ON THE TOP TEN PERFORMANCES OF 2015! The banquet is just a month away, and we need your help. What were the best team performances of the year??
FROM OUR COACHING STAFF
It is important to pick the proper mileage to build towards. The mileage will be something you can hold comfortably for about 10 weeks. This is not something we as coaches can make a blanket suggestion for you all as far as a target. If you want some guidance, contact us individually and we can help you figure out what is best for you. If you have trained at 70 miles a week effectively don't use this guide to build towards 100 and then drop to 75 during the middle of the season, build towards 70, 75, or 80 and plan on holding that mileage during the season. I would suggest not going significantly higher than what you have done successfully in the past, but don't be afraid to inch it up or keep it the same as the fall.
You should have been running for a couple of weeks now and can begin a structured mileage build-up. Those who have their dues paid by the end of January will have the complete training plan emailed to them at that time. Remember we want to be at our best in May and June. In order to do that you must put the mileage in now.
Week1: Jan 11-17 mileage should be 60-70% of what you plan to build towards
Monday: 35-55 min run, 4x8 second hill sprint Tuesday: 35-55 min run, 6x100 strides Wednesday: 45-65 min run Thursday: 35-55 min run or cross train or off Friday: 35-55 min run, 8x100 strides Saturday: 40-60 min run Sunday: 60-80 min long run
Week 2: Jan 18-24 Don't be afraid to run harder some days. Listen to your body and if you feel good then you should take advantage of that. Mileage this week is 65-75% of peak mileage
Monday: 40-60 min run, 5x8s hill sprint Tuesday: 40-60 min run, 8x100 strides Wednesday: 50-70 min run Thursday: 35-55 min run or cross train or off Friday: 40-60 min run, 8x100 strides Saturday: 40-60 min run Sunday: 65-85 min long run
Week 3: Jan 25-Jan 31 You should start feeling better now and back in a normal training groove, the mileage this week should be 70-80% of what you plan to build towards. DON'T GET LAZY AND SKIP STRIDES/HILL SPRINTS.
Monday: 40-60 min run, 6x8s hill sprint Tuesday: 45-65 min run, 8x100 strides Wednesday: 50-70 min run Thursday: 40-60 min run or cross train or off Friday: 45-65 min run, 8-10x100 strides Saturday: 40-60 min run Sunday: 70-90 min run
